Talk about the Roaring 20's. Would you like to have lived then? Do you like the slightly decadent (and very silly) image the period seems to have? Would you have been into the pop music of the time? Would you have been pals with Gatsby?

New, beautiful and damned answers.

Sam, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would've been Bertie Wooster. Japes, Scrapes, Tally-ho. The worst thing about the 20's is that you've got a lot of terrible things to come.

I would have loved it, but only if very rich and poss. American so I could run away to Paris and hang out with Hemingway and Anais Nin. Absinthe and free love!

Anna, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wouldn't you want to be doing something different from your current life though Anna?

chris, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You make me sound so glam, shame none of it's true.

Anna, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I still do like the pop music of the roaring 20s! Wouldn't have been so keen on the whole prohibition thing mind you.

Tom, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

US 20s = GUMSHOES!! and PROHIBITION also gangstas!!! UK 20s = flappers/the charleston/that 20s telly programme 'Upstairs Downstairs' (I think). In the UK 20s I would have been a no chested flapper (hem-hem) who did good deeds for the poor, in the US 20s I would either be a PRIVATE EYE like TRACER BULLET (or the dame that they all knew was trouble the minute she walked through the door) or a gurl involved in the BOOTLEGGING industry. 20s++!

Sarah, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also possibly, 'You Rang, M'Lord'?

Sarah, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I recently read "My Little Blue Dress" which has a particulaly hilarious section where "the elderly woman" is recalling Paris in the 20s.

I am now imagining Sarah as Amelie in the newsreel obituary bit. Don't wear yourself out Sarah, and look after your dad.

i would really have loved the hairstyle and being slinky and bopping away all night whilst on the GIN! actually that's not so different to my life now! apart from the slinkiness. and the hairstyle. and, come to think of it, the bopping.

katie, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am drawing the conclusion that you definately had to be American to have had fun in the 20's. I would rather be bopping and drinking in speakeasies or shagging famous artists and being decadent than doing good works. Plus if American then your dad would have made his fortune in some odd way like by importing linen or being 'in soap powder' or 'Chicago's toilet roll king'.

Anna, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think being German would have had its high points too, mind.

Tom, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in the 20s what it took to be a genius = taking delicate photographs of bell peppers!

Tracer Hand, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't you need a whole wheelbarrow of money to buy a beer in 1920's Germany tho? That would have made buying a round very inconvenient unless you had a horde of minions to carry your money around for you.

RickyT, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd probably have ended up on the Ford Model T production line, and then lost my job during the depression. Great :(

I have always envisioned myself as something of a Psmith, using my wiles to never do any work and irritating people along the way. In many ways ILE is our version of the Drones (in so many ways infact).

Pete, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Comrade Ptee, you have hit it.

Sam, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I would hang around Hollywood and see what the hell all those silent actors really sounded like. Though I have to admit, the concept of living in a time without computers, CDs and the like depresses me thoroughly. What did people do all day?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would be shining shoes or mopping a floor somewhere. If I was famous, I'd either be a drugged-out nightclub singer or a minstrel.

Dan Perry, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan's response reminds me why in general I try not to think about living in the past, actually. I'll take 2002 any day of the week!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 15 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would have robbed Gatsby and then stole his lady.
