it checks but doesn't remove, yes? I would need to install vcleaner.exe, though it might not remove the cpl of viruses I may have (a cpl of .dll files, I think, got bored of the check after leaving it on for a cpl of hours).
er, don't know if I actually have anything awfully dangerous as the computer has been running fine (I'm ususally relaxed about virus checkers, which is crazy of me i know).
what's prompted all this ws when trying to defragment C: drive it never got off 0%

Norton OK with Vista but won't let me update to anything but Norton 360 which seems to have been bitterl, universally panned so sod that. i will give Avast a go.
― blueski, Sunday, 7 October 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)
Avira seems to be pretty good and it's free. http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php

So I've bought my laptop (Compaq Presario)! Now how much anti-v software do I need? Bang for the buck plz.
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 5 February 2009 14:26 (seventeen years ago)
Avg Free is pretty good, can't beat the price.

― svend, Thursday, 5 February 2009 14:52 (seventeen years ago)
you need anti-spyware stuff as well, me thinks. SuperAntiSpyware is a good idea.
― Ludo, Thursday, 5 February 2009 15:27 (seventeen years ago)
i use avast! for the anti-virus and Spybot S&D for the old anti-spyware (both free). The combination seems to work fine for me and I can't remember the last time I had a problem.
I had to get rid of AVG after it kept repeatedly identifying an emulator I was running (ePSXe for the geeks out there) as a virus. Even when I assured it the program was fine it still wouldn't let me open it. Probably fixed by now though.
― ears are wounds, Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
thx guys, free is good.
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:03 (seventeen years ago)
Can I recommend Kaspersky again! Pretty please :-)
It seems to rate fairly highly (usually top or second top for detection of viruses) among so called "independent" reviews, and the 2009 version is so much more user friendly! You can set the stuff youself, or let it choose what's best. Once it knows your computer, it rarely bothers you. Honest!
Probably less than £15 on Amazon. I don't trust free ones - they've let things muck up my brother's and girlfriend's computers (muggins here = amateur tech support nonboffin).
― AndyTheScot, Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:11 (seventeen years ago)
does this Kaspersky play well w/ our non-exotic Yank machines
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:12 (seventeen years ago)
Kaspersky is used in Zone Alarm if you are looking for pay software.
― svend, Thursday, 5 February 2009 16:17 (seventeen years ago)
why do ppl use free stuff if it's untrustable? any other votes?
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:45 (seventeen years ago)
Avast is good. Windows Defender and Firewall should take care of the rest.
― james k polk, Thursday, 5 February 2009 18:50 (seventeen years ago)
avast is my favorite free one, pretty comprehensive and not buggy like avg has gotten. nod32 for paid although it takes a bit of tinkering
― do th ebred a (tremendoid), Thursday, 5 February 2009 22:39 (seventeen years ago)
using WebRoot Antivirus. It's not free, but it's cheaper than Norton and (I think) McAfee, does its job, and most importantly -- basic.
Norton has become really really really fucking bad. Norton doesn't sell security software anymore. They sell OCD Neat-Freak Religious Roommate software. "Norton 360 is protecting you." Avoid Norton, whatever you do.
― System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 6 February 2009 00:28 (seventeen years ago)
OCD Neat-Freak Religious Roommate
Go in peace.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 February 2009 00:30 (seventeen years ago)
The problem with Norton's particular OCD Neat-Freak Religious Roommate software isn't just that, but new updates are always broken. Then you have to give some underpaid worker an remote connection to your computer so he or she can disable ANYTHING USEFUL TO YOU in order to sorta maybe convince you they fixed the problem, when in fact, the developers are still working on the real fix, which usually takes a year, just in time for the NEW Norton product that is exactly the same piece of shit, but you know, it's REALLY protecting you this time.
So, yeah, I had problems with Norton.
― System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 6 February 2009 00:31 (seventeen years ago)
yeah i finally ditched norton last week after 8 yrs(?). way too needy. Morbs you should check if yr internet provider has free software.
― JAM, DWANGELA, RELLY! (sunny successor), Friday, 6 February 2009 00:40 (seventeen years ago)
well, ISP will probably be Verizon; it's what I can afford in phone combo.

two or three years ago i tried using avast on my old xp laptop - i'd previously used avg and avira. i started having problems when booting my machine and eventually found that avast was the cause. i ended up trying kingsoft antivirus and it is the best antivirus i used on that old machine. unobtrusive and light on resources.
― fit and working again, Sunday, 6 April 2014 07:04 (twelve years ago)
oh and i also tried panda which was better than avg/avira but not as good as kingsoft.
