And why do you still have it? Explain yourselves.

VD.

Anon, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Psychological scars, waryness of women named Alison, a black paint- damaged t-shirt.

stevo, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For the purposes of this question, do we need to distinguish between gifts and items that the ex-SO left behind?

At any rate, just yesterday I happened to spot a book that an ex had given me, and made a mental note to put it in the Goodwill bag. I'm sure it would have gone into a previous such cull bag if I were better at clearing out items I don't use any more.

j.lu, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was thinking of left behind items and ones that were willingly "lent".

I've got a t-shirt (it fits better than any t-shirt I could buy, she doesn't have the heart to ask for it back I think), a Tom Robbins book, and a Nine Inch Nails cd. My ex-ex girlfriend (that's two girlfriends ago) still has a coffeemaker that I would like back, grr.

Jordan, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My ex has my (v.long) Wedding Present 'Brassneck' T-Shirt and a copy of The Jam's 'Setting Sons' on cassette. Why she kept them, I don't really know (though the T was good for sleeping in, on cold winter nights) but both of which she can keep, quite frankly.

DavidM, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have her copy of To Kill A Mockingbird (never read it) and various gifts, including a nice monogrammed flask which is full of vodka (and from which i never drink). release me from this hell.

Dave M., Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have xXx's rat-tail, encased lengthwise in polyurethane.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Since I was with one woman for over 23 years, I can hardly move for such things, to one degree or another! I wouldn't know where to start listing them!

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

xXx's rat-tail?? b-but when did you meet xXx tracer?

mark s, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm waiting for someone to say "A baby" and bring the thread to a screeching halt.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer met Vin Diesel one day, see...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

An autographed copy of Matt Groening's _Love Is Hell_ with an inscription and obligatory hand-drawn Binky The Rabbit cartoon.

Since it's sort of a personalized item (the inscription is made out to my ex) I don't know if I could really maximize profits and eBay the thing, but I probably will anyway.

Chris Barrus, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hundreds of children

Matt, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That reminds me, my ex and I have joint custody of a copy of Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' that is autographed to both of us.

Jordan, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooooh, has Tracer "met" Vin Diesel in the Irish sense of the word? I am so jealous right now I can't think straight. Vin Diesel is a fox!

felicity, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i had a major purge about a year ago and threw out most letters etc. that i had been saving. i still have a couple of art objects from a girl. i should maybe have kept her letters too, as they were very pretty with swirlies and crayons and such.

Ron, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think we need to start a Vin Diesel C/D thread, if only because while I've seen much appreciation of the man, I have yet to see any further explanations. Also I can guess what they involve. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also = although. But also too.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Your guesses would be very entertaining. What are they?

felicity, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why Felicity, I would never be so ungallant as to refuse you the chance to say what needs saying. :-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i steal everything mark, not just language!

Tracer hand, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Necklaces. I have three from different people. What is it about me that screams 'give me your necklace, I'm that kind of girl'? Puzzling.

Anna, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In case the ex who this applies to is STILL google stalking me - look away now! This is about you!

Anyway following the break up he still has my copy of American Psycho, which is not such a great book to leave with an ex in case it gives him ideas. He also still has my Cod book which I would quite like back. And I have his copy of (ahem) Jonathan Livingstone Seagull ARGH ARGH ARGH which I hasten to add was UNSOLICITED and also I HAVE NEVER READ IT EVER, it just seems rude to chuck it out cos it's not mine. He was given it by his Ex (with a capital E). God knows what possessed him to give it to me.

Emma, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris - personally inscribed stuff tends to be worth more, not less. SELL SELL SELL!

Tom, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a very boring book about the history of Astronomy (Thales to kepler, to be sure) from 1. She has a lot of strange wedding present albums sticking out like a sore thumb in her CD collection. Lots of books from most recent ex, she has my LOVELY green soft cotton "All the songs sound the same" T-shirt. (There is a pattern somewhere there.)

Alan T, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a hairband with a pig on it, hahah I was 14. And that's all. That's my sensitive moment of the day over.

Ronan, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a cememt street tile sealed in plastic. he was an art school student then. I keep it because it's topo heavy to remove it. I now use it as a telephone stand.

erik, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing. They are OUTTA HERE. No survivors.

Archel, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mostly memories. Though there is a pair of tennis shoes around here somewhere.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate all my exes, except one, but I have decided to keep all the photos I have with them in. Like, the photos are mine, but I still have my exes' *image* if you know what I mean. I could throw them out, but I'd rather keep them as I don't want to deny parts of my past and I want to be able to remember my exes, especially so that I remember not to get involved anyone like them, also there was good stuff as well as bad and it's okay to remeber that too.

toraneko, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Issue #2 of Girlyhead. I forgot to return it before we broke up.

rosemary, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a couple hair bands that now decorate the stick shift in my car.

bnw, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A copy of "Taming a Sea-Horse" by Robert B. Parker, with a love letter from 17-year-old me to her tucked inside (she'd been using it as a bookmark). The book is ok, the letter a smarmy horror of spinelessness. Ah, Youth!

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a couple hair bands that now decorate the stick shift in my car.

I'd think getting Poison wrapped around your stickshift would be crowded enough, but Faster Pussycat too?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have all my ex-girlfriends heads buried in my basement.

Chris, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ned i just got your joke and laughed hysterically. Don't forget Cinderella!

Chris, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, they're good candidates as well.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

emotional baggage, nitemares and regret. actually, i've just realized i have to change my name on here in case of psycho-stalking- ex googling.

sand.y, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
i have problems accepting compliments due to years of being put down. I also have problems accepting that someone would like me for being me as the one other person I really loved ditched me when I thought things were going fine.

Madam Plinky (Madam Plinky), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

one red hooded sweatshirt. one belt: too small to wear now that i'm too fat dept. several cds: jungle mix, two stereolab, one odb.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I have all the Sandman books that were lent to me by that one boyfriend I had about three years ago that had one ball (Alex to thread).

mandee, Thursday, 3 October 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I just realized that I implied Alex has something to do with my one-balled ex boyfriend, which he does not.

Alex has nothing to with anything remotely having to do with one-balledness, just want to clarify that.

mandee, Thursday, 3 October 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Mandee, did you love Hitler?

(sorry)

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 3 October 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to contrast all the sad stories here by saying something like gold coins and chocolate cake.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 October 2002 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you leave her a ball?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 October 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

haha dan i have an ex and a baby but it isnt really quite like that so it doesnt count.
my ex husband has all our stuff which i left behind upon leaving the country.
but i have memories, and not all so bad that i dont still think about them with a tinge of regret.
one thing that can be a hassle is ex's who deliberately leave something behind so they can keep coming back to 'just get such n such'.

donna (donna), Thursday, 3 October 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"I'd like to decorate YOUR stickshift."

gabriel rodriguez-doerr (gabe), Thursday, 3 October 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha! I love that I was mentioned in connection with a ONE-TESTICLED boyfriend!

Anyway, I got a couple of CDs, a bunch of clothes, and HSV-1 from my last ex.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 4 October 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Mandee, do you think he READ Sandman cuz he ONLY HAD ONE BALL!!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 4 October 2002 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Three sweaters too big for me to wear and a copy of Lord of the Rings.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 4 October 2002 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

a pair of red shorts with white stripes down the side. A Black Eyed Peas CD.

rainy (rainy), Friday, 4 October 2002 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

A fluffy mascot from User bastarding Friendly aka The World's Worst Webcomic, a five-year-old cdrom of Turnpike mail/news client, and an IDE cable. Not even all from the same person. GOOD GRIEF, it's all too embarrassing. I *am* one of them there geek hags I have been known to mutter about.

(Don't do it: they'd rather read their linux-kernel digests than acknowledge your existence. True story. Sigh. Fair enough really but he might at least have pretended...)

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 4 October 2002 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

So would not having figured out even vi yet improve or take away my appeal to the average geek hag?

(I think I have some SCSI cables about somewhere. No IDE, mind)

Graham (graham), Friday, 4 October 2002 01:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know. vi terrifies me. I have to stick to pico and joe and put up with all potential suitors (after all non-geeks almost never even look at me except in a "hahaha dork" way) lecturing me about how pico doesn't comply to the GPL or whatever and is therefore evil. In fact I am entirely clueless about the actual details and the person I was being rude about at the time probably is too, so as long as you manage to be rude and patronising, think that saying "Nutscrape" and "Mickey$hit" is hilarious, and talk about car innards for hours or start uptime wars whenever anyone goes to the pub with you, you too can probably be a convincing rabid linux advocate. (Can you guess that my answer to another popular thread of the moment would be "about five billion years and I'm mostly managing to convince myself I'm happier that way too", can you, can you, huh?)

Rebecca goes off-topic (again) (reb), Friday, 4 October 2002 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Mandee, do you think he READ Sandman cuz he ONLY HAD ONE BALL!!!

Alex, I am nearly positive that's why he read the Sandman series.

Mandee, Friday, 4 October 2002 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I KNEW IT!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 4 October 2002 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know vi, but I don't use it. Does that make me even more hardcore?

Sadly, no.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 4 October 2002 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to have a collection of love letters that were nice in a " that's sweet how the hell could you have turned into such a mentalist?" way. This was before the mentalist Ex went on a ripping up all my stuff spree.

Now i have a lion teddy.

Danny (Danny), Friday, 4 October 2002 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

innervisions

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 October 2002 07:38 (twenty-three years ago)

BSD all the way!

Because Steve Jobs says so. (graham), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank GOD there isn't an 'M' in the above acronym...

Sarah (starry), Friday, 4 October 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I use vi almost every day, unfortunately. I am still not terribly good with it, and if it doesn't involve lots of extra work I tend to work in Notepad. I hate Word in particular - it needs a 'Know your place - you are just a word processor and don't know what I want better than I do' toggle.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

my ex has two of my books and has had them for the last year and I want them back right now.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have anything, but I am convinced my ex stole my vintage Adidas jacket. He kept telling me what a great jacket it was, and then a week later I could never find it again. It was tiny and girly looking, so I know he couldn't have fit into it -- he probably gave it to some other chiX0r.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

(Who's dork enough to start the Unix Text Editors: Search and Destroy thread? Not I)

Graham (graham), Friday, 4 October 2002 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
hah, how wholesome you all are. Last month I found a couple of my ex's (used) knickers down the side of my bed. They're still there. I'll throw them out in a few weeks after I've grossed my mates out by throwing them at their heads sometime. Also, I have a vibrator I bought for the same ex. Not quite sure what to do with this though. It's not really the done thing to offer it to a new gf is it? Plus some nude pics we took once. Oh yeah, and I've still got that shitty double cd Wu Tang Clan album. As for the ex before that, it's all crap like Sartre books and little frog badges.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Discordance Axis t-shirt, a good ol' Les Bleus jersey, some Skinny Puppy CDs, and an old Russian military coat. Amongst a whole pile of things, I mean he left $300 behind for some reason.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Urgent and Key question: WHICH SKINNY PUPPY CDS???????

(I love that I skim-read this thread and thought I'd made the hairband joke.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I don't remember which ones but they were PLENTY INDUSTRIAL I'll tell you that.

Oh, and the fucking Aphex Twin CDs.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish my exes left me $300, Aphex Twin cds and Discordance Axis t-shirts.

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Twice now, left behind: mix tapes *I* had made for *him*. Actually, even worse in one instance was a left-behind mix tape I'd made that I later discovered he had taped over. Ouch.

Jen (nstop), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i lent my ex £700 and at some point I said "don't worry about paying me back" (!?!) and, unsurprisingly, she hasn't. Even though we're still good friends. Do you think she ever will? Like, for pride's sake?

I have very little of my exes', just because on the whole I'm still chums with them and give them their stuff back. I do have Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle" album, though.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Snoop Dogg is one of your exes???????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

money. a cellphone. some books. letters. I should give these things back, especially since my suspicion that "don't worry about paying that back" means exactly the opposite has been confirmed above.

isadora (isadora), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Like it says in the song about him, "A pair of pants, a pack of drum, a lighter and two photographs, I'll give you back the things you left if you give me back my heart..."

The drum is nearly gone, due to housemate continually pinching it for rolling fatties, but the filters are still left at the bottom of the packet. I think I was secretly hoping that his band would become really successful so that I could eBay the pants and the naked photographs.

I honestly thought I'd given him back all the pants. He was really terrible about leaving them at my house. Like, I'd wash and fold and give him back three pairs of pants that I'd found lodged in various improbable places, and then he'd leave and I'd find ANOTHER pair down the back of the bed. Secretly, maybe he didn't want a girlfriend, he just wanted a tour laundry service. Sigh.
