Chupa-Cabras, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RickyT has eggs, butter, various stinky cheeses, houmous and watercress, orange juice, marg, also some pickle and harissa. i have organic veg including: peppers, tomatoes, butternut squash and mushrooms, lemons and limes, fresh ginger, fresh chillies, soya milk, soya yoghurt, soya mayo, yeast pate with herbs tomato chutney and marg. aubrey has salad cream hahahaa!

katie, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm umm haven't been to Waitrose for ages. I have some mozzarella, milk, pesto, assorted mouldy things in jars, a yellow pepper, some very wilty lettuce, yogurt & mint salad dressing, mustard, a P&J smoothie for tomorrow's hangover and some bits of lemon and lime. Whenever I go to my mum's I am amazed at how much stuff she has in her 2 fridges when it's just her, my dad and the cat. Food! Everywhere! A proper separate box just for cheese!

Emma, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In addition to what Katie said I also have lemons, orange juice, plum tomatoes, ginger and mayonnaise.

RickyT, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One bag of organic radishes purchased in a moment of madness.

One box of cherry tomatos

One pint of skimmed milk (a genuine preference and stops my whole milk flatmates nicking it.)

One tub of Diet Flora.

Mouldy goats cheese.

Whole grain mustard

French mustard

Half a bottle of Absolut vodka

Around 20 bottles of nail varnish

Anna, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bit of cheddar, 2 tomatoes, half a cucumber, organic hummus, milk, butter. We're going for minimalism. Or starvation. I'll keep you posted.

Archel, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I subscribe to the old saw about 'keep your friends close, but your enemies closer'. Personally, I prefer the back of the bottom shelf where they don't interfere with access to the condiments.

Aimless, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actimels, two cans of kronenberg, one can of smithwicks, one bottle of guinness, one half open bottle of my parent's chablis, two cans of bulmers cider, two packets of margarine, one plate of 6 home made burgers covered with some parsley on it (mmmm dinner), one packet of Irish full cream butter, one tub of yucky benecol shit butter, one large bowl of salad, one glass jar of salad dressing, half a plastic bottle of cranberry juice, several tomatoes, some chillis, some iceberg lettuce, some yoplait yoghurts, two cartons of milk, some cheese (cheddar), and I think that's it.

My fridge is not that big, it's just I took this as a mental memory excercise.

Ronan, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeo valley yoghurt, redcurrants, chorizo slices, olive/mucked-about pesto, eggs, a lime, a suspicious looking chocolate pudding from an ex-housemate, mushrooms, tomatoes, tomato puree, milk, orange juice, brie, stilton, remnants of an onion, some single cream, fish sauce bottle, um... some other stuff of my other housemate. (That sounds quite healthy for me. I surprise myself.)

(I am very low at the moment, waiting for announcements of redundancies, any second now, so a list of food is a good distraction)

Alan T, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

coo also i have a bottle of ORGANIC CIDER from tesco which aubrey bought me as a present. it is NUMMY and all the nummier for being a pressie!

katie, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate Cider, those two cans were left in my car after I went to see the Chemical Brothers but I am so tight I will wait till my mates who live near me come home for the autumn and are drinking in my house and I will barter with them for something better.

Ronan, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

food 'n' drinks.

nathalie, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just thinking about how heinously overstuffed it was the other day:

Couple bottles milk, semi-skimmed; half a bottle of red wine; tonic; bottled water; carton of orange and one of cranberry; free-range eggs (from local people at the local farm); some caerphilly, I think, a bit of mature cheddar and a little lump of parmesan; normandy butter; some tzatziki. Mustards (whole grain, Dijon); marmalade; raspberry jam; pesto; harissa; capers; bottle of olives and one of sun-dried toms in manky olive oil (as mentioned elsewhere). Natural yoghurt (large; it is the Food of Health), 2 small pots yeo valley strawberry yoghurt; small pot sour cream; some mayo, I think; coriander and flat-leaf parsley in jar of water (v prone to spillage); lemon and lime, a few pick-your-own raspberries. Yesterday's left-over rice; some chick peas. Chillies, garlic and ginger; fresh pod peas; green pepper; bunch carrots (with leaves!!! like in Bugs Bunny!); spring onions (other onions, with tomatoes, not in fridge); couple of courgettes; rocket.

This looks healthy because the chocolate is not kept in the fridge.

Ellie, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

recently threw out the THIRD tub of aubergine salad in two weeks cos it tasted rub. I can't find nice aubergine salad any more (Moutabel I think is the original name). Now I've tried all the shops in my area, but none have anything as nice as the stuff I used to get in the local lebanese corner-shop where i lived in Queen's Park. and nice flat pitta squares/flat bread stuff. where do you get that. grr

Alan T, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From memory: milk, water, Minute Maid Orange Juice, butter, mushrooms, vegetable fat, some Camembert, some goats cheese, a bit of salad, a jif lemon juice thing, food dressing, a couque Suisse and about 20 bottles of Belgian beer (misc. varieties). (Also, some stuff in the freezer compartment, but I dunno what)

Jeff W, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...oh and half a bottle of v. cheap dry sherry.

(my parents have no cat but the same food-storing habits as Emma's it would seem. Their cheese box is a long, oblong thing)

Jeff W, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan - d'you mean the really vinegary aubergine salad? The stuff that's rampant in Greece? I keep buying 'aubergine salad' in the hope that it *won't* be that, but more like roasted aubergine mush - is that Baba Ganouj? Man, I should just make some.

Ellie, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's just the same as the one my parents have! Mmm I love the cheese box. Full of cheesy goodness. I eat so much cheese when I am at their house. Though at the moment I think it'll be empty as my dad is off cheese in training for some bike ride in Germany. Won't bother going there till the box is replenished.

Emma, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Milk (semi skimmed - I changed a couple of years ago) Orange Juice, Apple Juice, half a chorizo, feta, German Smoked Cheese, cheddar, Flora Buttery, 4 eggs, red pesto (a mistake), Red Thai Curry sauce, Rogan Josh sauce (v mouldy I think), anchovies in oil (fine thanks), marmite, tub of very out of date free mozzerella, two tubes of tomato puree.

I need to shop. There would usually be tomatoes and salad knocking about.

Pete, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ellie -- I think it's related to baba ganouj, but *slightly* more vinegary. it's just lovely with olive oil. mmm. i miss it so. might have to go back specially one day to remind myself exactly why the stuff i keep getting falls short of the mark.

Alan T, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Recently cleaned out and emptied (good thing too) -- mostly juices, sparkling water, some beer, a bit of parmesan cheese, a variety of other things mostly my housemate's, etc.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

3 or 4 bottles of sparkling wine; 3 or 4 bottles of Shiner Bock; a quart of skim milk; 10 yogurts; 3/4 of a loaf of Italian bread; a jar of strawberry preserves; several pears; several lemons; a head of romaine lettuce; a bottle of caesar salad dressing; some green onions; 2 containers of beef and pasta salad; a half-empty bottle of sauvignon blanc; 2 eggs; a lump of a Swiss-type cheese.

Beer! There's beer in my fridge! Ace! thanks for making me look.

Matt, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm jealous of the mango chutney. (:

Mine is running pretty empty: corn tacos, mustard, salsa, some bottles of pyramid ale, a bit of cheddar cheese and a big chunk of parmesan chese, orange juice, some sketchy looking cantelope chunks in a bowl, eggs, 1 or 2 slices of turkey from the deli, three different kinds of tomato sauce, a bunch of random types of 35 mm film and a bag of spinach leaves.

lyra in seattle, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm mango chutney. my fridge contains: 1L plain soy milk, 1L soyaccino soy milk, bean sprouts, pickled capsicum, a tomato, sunrise margarine, lisa's hummus, tomato sauce, cream cheese. that is all.

di, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two containers of frozen oj from approx one year ago. two ice cube trays containing no ice. a wilting red onion. three bottles of s. pellegrino. three cartons of rice milk. a bag of salad greens and a carrot and a head of broccoli. one half stick butter. some salad dressings and such. a container containing (supposedly) something called potato pasta, never investigated this item. 4 rolls of film.

Ron, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rotting bread, crumbs, six-month-old cartons of milk that I can't be bothered to remove, bits of packaging from products consumed long ago, some (relatively fresh) oranges and plums, dust

David, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha that was funny when Ellie said "man."

I would answer the question, but I've stopped using the fridge due to proliferation of roommate's rotting items, most of which were foul even before they began rotting. There could be stacks of cash in there, the smell still wouldn't be worth opening the door. By way of explanation, the roommate has been doing nothing all summer apart from lying around with no shirt on, sweating on my previously- white couch; his primary entertainment has been finding new markets at which to buy food, then making the food, eating three bites, and putting the remainder, uncovered, in what I'll very charitably still describe as a fridge. I would desperately like to do something about this, but unlike the roommate I actually work during the day and often see friends at night, meaning I have neither the time nor the energy to bother about it. My only recourse is bitching, which I don't enjoy doing -- so I don't. It was nice knowing you, fridge. Remember when we had the mashed-up tropical fruit to cook the salmon in? Yeah, yeah, good times.

BREAD IN FRIDGE = the fear of ILX!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Di, come and eat the bread!

rainy, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

2 pints of semi skimmed milk
Normandy (unsalted) butter
A bottle of champagne (present from neighbours for looking after their pets last weekend while they were away having fun somewhere)
Half a bottle of Chablis (may polish this off tonight though)
Carton of apple juice, and one of apple + mango
6 rashers of unsmoked rindless back bacon (mmmm.....bacon sarnies!)
Strawberry jam (home made! Yay for me being domesticated!)
Bag of mixed salad leaves
Cucumber
Carton of cherry tomatoes
1 red pepper
Large chunk of extra mature Cheddar cheese, small chunk of Parmesan, some Brie and St Agur (blue cheese). This is probably more cheese than one human being should have in their fridge........but yum!
Various jars of spicy pickles/condiments : Green Chilli Pickle, Brinjal (aubergine) Pickle, Mango Chutney, Smoked Garlic Pickle.
Fresh garlic, + a jar of garlic purée. Jar of tomato purée.
Jar of (Hellmann's) mayonnaise
One of those water filter jug things filled with ice cold filtered water
Strawberries, freshly picked yesterday from my very own garden
4 chicken breasts (HALF PRICE IN THE CO-OP THIS WEEK!!) which will be made into a curry very soon
Half a jar of sliced jalapenos
A lemon, 2 limes, some nectarines and a large bunch of seedless green grapes

No eggs in there, because I keep them on a wire chicken-shaped egg holder on the worktop. I know all the books say you should store eggs in the fridge, but they are better to cook with when at room temperature and I can never remember to take them out of the fridge half an hour before I need them. They don't go manky because I don;t leave them lying around for long.

Chocolate is in the cupboard - I don't like it when it's cold and rock-hard. I lost half a filling that way.

C J, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh no i'm almost out of swiss cheese! we have lots of icky orange cheese and icky provolone but only two pieces of swiss and NO monster (munster? muunster with dots over it? eh forget it) cheese. aargh.

Maria, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm... I have seen a post remarkably like this one on another msg board.

(looks suspiciously at CJ)

I was overcome by shame when I confessed the contents there, and I don't think I can cope with a second helping.
