is this the same "bubbeleh" that my jewish friend used to call me whenever i got into a sulk about something silly and she mock- sympathised? kind of like a yiddish equivalent to "awww poor baby"?

Yes it is Katie. It is not so bad when you're 8 and having your cheek grabbed & being called bubbeleh by assorted relatives at your cousin's wedding but when you are 21 and the same thing is happening at the same cousin's engagement party you start to worry. Crazy Jewish relatives (obviously I love them all dearly and appreciate the numerous neuroses they have encouraged in me).
