Which is better?

Sterling Clover, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't that langue? It's the overarching structure, so I'd say it wins.

Matt, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not a linguist = my day to day interactions all have to do with parole (of me and others) = parole rules ok

Josh, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whereas I am a grumpy bastard who converses as little as possible.

Matt, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Josh, you underestimate yourself. You are a cunning linguist. *tish boom*

felicity, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Watch out Matt, you could be my next victim!

*grins* Now I have The Fear.

langue is a dud cos its too er...chomskian? im not into that theoretical thing, cos people tend to forget the actualities of language usage. i eman, they get a bit carried away. im not sure about the innateness of this sort of thing, the L.A.D. thing. spliting up langue and parole tends to deny any link between the two, whereas if the parole, ie usuage gets changed by, say pl. of 'man' to 'mans' instead of 'men' ( ive seen this about a bit: a patois thing?), then the langue has to change, whereas there is a sort of amplication that langue comes first, and parole follows the 'structure'. de saussure can bite my ass!

IMO, until we find out what "langue" is (that is, until brain research advances by a century or three), this is a pretty meaningless debate.
