101 Honey to the Bee

From a link on NTK, so maybe this has been discussed already. Somebody please make the mp3 CD NOW!

Alan T, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a wonderful mix of stuff, really it is.

Alan T, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a mild state of shock, as I only dislike one of the tracks in the top ten. This had never happened before with one of these collective poll thingies.

RickyT, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah it's a good list coz it has the buggles, falco, duran duran, transvision vamp, a-ha and the carpenters. Personally, I'm a little confused by the lack of power ballads: no Roxette or Berlin or Starship, whats up with that?

jel --, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Insanity by Oceanic the dance song I think it is?

Ronan, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

28 - BERLIN take my breath away!

Alan T, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it is Ronan (ph34r my psychic powahs!)

RickyT, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only two duffers in the list, Dodgy and Phil Collins. very 80s-centric (this is TVcream we're talking abotu) but still a lovely mix of other stuff

Alan T, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fantastic!! (Well except for John Parr, Dodgy and Murray Head)and The Korgis entry should have been 'If I Had You', of course.

Airport! S-S-Single Bed! (jesus Noosha Fox was bonkers). The Rah Band (another crackpot). Cameo!

Quantum Jump - Lone Ranger (Tonto him think white man poofter!) IIRC.

Dr. C, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Attention to detail is not my strong report! Opps! Have to stop skim reading things! hehe! sorry...*shuffles off quietly*

jel --, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

urrrghhh...my strong report? I dunno what I'm on about.

jel --, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wot Ricky T said. Fuck, I can scarcely believe this is the result of a poll, seems such an idiosyncratic list. But totally OTM - if we overlook The Cu*t and Terry Wogan (and even those aren't so bad). I tried to subscribe, but the link on the page doesn't work. Bah.

Jeff W, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this inspired me to write about the buggles...

anthony, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any list w/ 'Excerpt From A Teenage Opera' on it can't be all bad!

Andrew L, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i keep trying to remember the tune to that, but end up singing the theme to "postman pat" (grocer jack, you see)

Alan T, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually it's v. similar Alan, you may be on to something there!

I wonder if K. West ever recorded any of the other parts of his 'teenage opera'...

Andrew L, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are there any records from the last ten years in the top 50? That's hardly an improvement on Beatles/Queen/REM ect. It's better than a lot of lists but still ruined by the averagin process I think. Schooldisco.com is better than this.

Graham, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

daft punk. oceanic. beloved. fat boy slim. all less than 10 years old. pwei and electronic just over 10 years ago

Alan T, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

None in the last five years (even that fbs track is five years old now). I played about thirty of these at a wedding last week, and it covers fifty percent of the tracks I played at LondonIndieUSA. Hmm.

Still a nice selection of tunes picked - I would guess - by mutual consent rather than a straight ballot.

Pete, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Teenage Opera wasn't really completed properly, although there are a couple of versions of it out on album. It was Mark Wirtz's project and Keith West, the singer in Tomorrow (bonkers proto-prog of My White Bicycle fame),was involved in the early stages before he quit.

It's a bloody fantastic single.

Dr. C, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beloved = 1990
Oceanic = 1991
Daft Punk = 1995
Fatboy Slim = #52

Not the best defence in the world Alan. If it wasn't for this massive hole I probably would really like this list.

Any list that contains "Club Tropicana" can be all bad. I'm not sure why though, cuz I think it's a fantastic record.

Graham, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fair point. blimey was daft punk 95?! (that's the only one that counts). Looking closely there is mention of a 1998 cut-off.

I'd say that any schooldisco list (just going by the CD compilation) would fail in going back as far as this list does, and would have much more "obvious choices" (whatever that means - -i don't know myself), e.g. schooldisco has Black Box and not Starlight (same people BTW), and wouldn't have propoganda, pwei or the motors (actually they might have the last one). oh what do i know.

Alan T, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My point about schooldisco was only that it manages to be fairly period neutral (apart from not playing v.old stuff), I do prefer this list's obvioous:obscure ratio (and its choice of obscurities). Now if we could combine the two.

Graham, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

graham wins the thread

Alan T, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't mean to.

Graham, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha it struck Graham as full of old records, whereas my first thought was that I knew how old these people were: significantly younger than me (that's 43), but certainly much older than Graham. My generation tends to regard the '70s as representing music's peak (i.e. we were teenagers then) but this is the list of people who were teens in the '80s. And I bet all of the people involved are patting themselves on the back for showing how wacky they are.

Having said that, it is an unusually high good:bad ration, for sure. Very white, though.

Nobody mentioned that Waterfalls by TLC is another comparatively recent one (mid-nineties, anyway).

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

f*cking fantastic - the very best chart / top 100 i've ever seen.
