WHat item of clothing do you associate with people

You know the wayu Mickey Mouse always wears the same pants with them big buttons and braces, and Donald Duck has always got on the sailor suit despite never showing any inclination to be in the navy (christ he's even got a girlfriend) are their items of clothing that your mental picture of someone is always wearing? I was just thinking that I always think of Lixi in her green basketball T-Shirt, and Tom in a black, slightly crumples shirt. Fact is I know many occasions when they have not worn these items of clothing (indeed I don't think i've seen Tom in a casual shirt at all this year). So are there items of clothing which become part of the person in your brainspace.

Pete, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete: no towel

David, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do it more with smells and sounds.

Soile = Lauren Hill and Clinique Happy.

Emma = Jeff Buckley and Jean Paul Gautier's Fragile

Paul = some blokey hair wax thing and The Stone Roses

Anna, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to mention smells but thought
a) It would be too rude
b) Minestrone.

Pete, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I imagine ILE folks as wearing black on the whole. And Alan wears a tankpuss t-shirt.

jel --, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love how Lixi's T-Shirt matches her blog.

Anna's hat.

Graham, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My hat rocks.

Pete do you really smell of ministrone? I had a wild craving for gazpacho soup today. I found some and ate it for lunch, so I'm very happy now.

Anna, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my T-shirt matches my midori limonfanta

mark s, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only when I am sweating badly Anna - which I am today despite all efforts of deoderisers. Curse you building architect for my south facing, no breezed greenhouse of an office.

Generally I smell okay though, I just created a minestrone rod for my own back. A nice cool watercress soup would be lovely.

Pete, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete my mental image of you includes the T Shirt with the decks that look like an oven. I completely agree about Lixi's green basketball T- Shirt but there is also the Assistant Lock Keeper one vying for contention. Emma has those jeans. My mental image of Alex T includes his denim jacket which I don't think he's owned for about 5 years now! Al = leather jacket, Duke Nukem T-Shirt. Ktee = STRIPEY SOX!

I am wearing a black crumpled shirt today! Actually it is more like a smock. My favourite black shirt has 'shrunk' (or I have 'grown', guess which is more likely) so that might be why. Also my membership of the fascist party has expired.

Tom, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And of course Magnus 0wnz this thread with his 'third wardrobe'!

Tom, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete: nipple shirt
Tom: a SMOCK (I love the word SMOCK)
Lixi: maggot (NB this is not insulting but an injoke involving sleeping bags)
Emma: see through top COR
Mangus: SLACKS
RickyT: $indie_band_tshirt
Ktee: VEGAN SHOES!
Alang: tankpuss!
Mark S: sandals
Tim H: Thin Man tshirt

That'll do!

Sarah, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

heh in which case starry = indie skirt and trainers (and of course stripey s0X0R), ptee = nipple shirt (there is no way out of it!), aubrey = charity shop t-shirts saying "coke" or "baltimore" and rickyT will forever be associated with THE CARDIGAN...

katie, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the ILE top!

Alan T, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to point out that I always wear a bra under my see thru tops. And I only wear them in the privacy of mine / my friends' homes or at night e.g. Sunday morning tramping home I had to cover myself up with my jacket and nearly melted to death in the heat.

Emma, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tankpuss has been relegated to "slobbing around" t-shirt, as i am way too embarassed to even remember that i even had the thing made. (wanker)

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham's Angelica T-Shirt.
Anna's Fishnets.
Carsmiles jacket with the mangy badge on it
Ned's - er - hair.

Pete, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only can think of N's green t shirt because of his anecdote about wearing it when the Ireland match was on and getting invited into the back of the pub he was in.

I always think of my friend in this khaki shirt that says "hot tuna" in small writing on it for some reason, cos his second name is similar to a well known fish often served smoked, and so this shirt was amusing for about 30 seconds.

Ronan, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham will always be associated with "CRAIG DAVID SUCKS" in my mind.

Dan Perry, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

did mr. perry not invent the sartorial wonder that is/are fucksocks?

katie, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been waiting for his seecond album so I can wear that again.

Graham, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FUCKSOCKS

Graham, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned's - er - hair.

There have been worse associations.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To my shame, I must admit that I stole the phrase "FUCKSOCKS!" from b3ta. (They also use "CUNTYMINTS!" sometimes. I love that site.)

Dan Perry, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My first thought was Anna's lovely hat, but I've only met most of you a few times, so not many things come to mind. For Andrew L it's certainly black jeans & t-shirt, which hardly makes him stand out in our circles (no criticism, as it's my look too). My other old pal here is Tim Bateman - I guess my first thought there is probably a woollen tie (or one that looks as if it is woollen anyway). He often looks like a Wodehouse character.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a lot easier when you've only met people once or seen single pictures of them. Chicagoans, New Yorkers, and Ned are all stuck in whatever they were wearing when I met them. Highlights: Ned in Catherine Wheel Chrome shirt, Tracer looking like a Stroke in his action-slacker vest thing, Chicago Tiiiim in checkered Vans with a harem of art-school girls around him (Ms. Redwell can back me up on this one). Everything else is from either Trig Brother photos or Picnic-in-Sky photos: Gareth Moog shirt, Ptee glossy erection- trousers, Tom rumply burgundy button-down, Emma in blue with is that a denim skirt (if not Katie is definitely in denim skirt in mental- picture, thought I don't know where I got that from), Mark S "Punk as Fuck" tee, Suzy smart tank, Madchen pink stripey sweater, Lixi gray cardigan ... ech, you all know what you were wearing.

nabisco, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I'm saying JUST IMAGINE, some people have this entire mental image of you based solely on what you happened to be wearing that particular night that photos were taken. But I assume you all take pains to look your best for important ILX events.

nabisco, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I'm trying to imagine how Anna works a hat and fishnets and I am INTRIGUED.

nabisco, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gee, that's not CREPEY at all, Bisco.

Dan Perry, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh c'mon, I've never seen Anna -- for all I know she could be a ridiculous troll with actual fisherman's nets wrapped around her legs and a giant propeller-beanie on her head -- ALL I'M SAYING is that the sartorial combination of hat + fishnets strikes me an INTRIGUING one.

(NB Anna I do not picture you as a "ridiculous troll" wearing a propeller-beanie: I would actually have loads of nice things to say about you here but I'm sure I would be unjustly accused of being creepy again.)

nabisco, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn you one and all for doing this to me.

nabisco, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned in Catherine Wheel Chrome shirt

Which I also happen to be wearing RIGHT NOW. Ergo, you are psychic and therefore your images are correct ones. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't say you were CREEPY, I said you were CREPEY. Big difference.

Dan Perry, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

your search for "troll in a beanie" did not return any documents

mark s, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I don't have a clue what any of you are like IRL but I do imagine you all looking rather smart. I certainly have a mental picture of Martin wearing a suit ALL THE TIME, and I see Anthony in pastel colours, well-pressed beige chinos and possibly a lemon short sleeved shirt with button-down collar.

When I think of Queen G, I think of sequins and diamanté.

Do you all not dress up when you come here, then?

C J, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only wear a suit for work, I'm afraid, CJ. I went years and years without having to wear such things. First time I met one friend while wearing a suit, she went into hysterics for a few minutes. The reacytion of work colleagues when they first saw me in jeans, t-shirt and leather jacket was similar. Conclusion: I look ridiculous in anything, but people can get used to me.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna's hat (loose the coloured thing):

http://www.curbside-couture.com/images/a-c/b-hat-2.jpg

Anna's hat rocks (even more than the hat Lixi found).

Graham, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm certain you don't look any where near as ridiculous as me right now Martin. Due to the horrible humid evening despite the thunderstorm (did anyone else have one of those tonight?), I have just had a shower to try and cool down. Unable to find a hairbrush in time, I now have scary hair. I am sure you are a picture of sartorial elegance compared with that.

C J, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco (at the risk of making you feel creepy) I usually wear other clothes too, just people seem to remember accessories. Hat is a floppy Stevie Nicks affairette and I wear a lot of fishnets in various colours, but due to London fashion influences these don't seem too remarkable. How's Chic

Anna, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rar [insert controversial/ disagreeable/ just plain stupid troll comment here] rar, growl etc

Huge troll person, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But only on full moons, otherwise I am quite small.

Anna, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Last sentence of first post: How's Chicago? Not how's Chic, because although you may be on close personal friend terms with 70's disco freaky people, I don't think it's likely.

Multiple posting to one thread is a bad thing. I shall pause now. *

Anna, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh dear Anna, I'm not sure that anyone was imagining you in ONLY fishnets and a hat until you said that. It really isn't kind (or safe, possibly) doing such things to a man my age.

As for me being a picture of sartorial elegance, CJ, haha. I am the sort of person who gets comradely nods from tramps (this is not hyperbole or figurative but LITERAL TRUTH). If I didn't have a lodger I would be naked now* because it is hot and my fan has just died, but I am instead wearing a tatty black kaftan. As for my hair, it somehow manages to get untidy even when it is about 5mm long. I shall get my clippers out for a #1 cut tomorrow, because I have a date on Thursday and would rather look even more balding than I am than scruffy.

*This is not equivalent to what I moaned at Anna about because I am 20 years older than Anna and twenty times less cute.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Current mental image of Dang Perry
http://www.flossysdolls.com/images/trolls/tbcelb6.jpg

nabisco, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm now singing B A Roberton's 'Kool in the Kaftan' for Martin

C J, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yuk, matching leisure wear, never!

Anna, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had no idea how much that picture hurt until I tracked down the URL.

Dan Perry, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha "that person over there ... that person is a VERY BAD MAN."

nabisco, Monday, 29 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually now I think about it I'd say Tom's hair, Anna's high heels probably, Pete in a green t-shirt (does this exist?), and Emma's sunglasses from Glastonbury. Gareth's hair or jumper, DG in a black sort of polo neck I think? That's my memory, Mark S=glasses also. I hope noone's offended if I don't remember/

Ronan, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Industrial goggles = coolest accessory of new millennium.

Me = most complimentary person etc etc

Tim, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete's answer also brings into doubt his trustworthiness as an eyewitness, the famed ILE top only resembling a t-shirt in that you wear it on the top half of your body.

RickyT, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

People always laugh at us trendsetters in the beginning, then a couple of months later they're all following suit. Just you wait etc. etc.

Pete I only wear the soft porn dressing gown if it's very warm as the fleecy thing is too hot.

Emma, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is sexualist! People panting over Anna's fishnets but where are the Internet chiXoR drooling at the thought of the nipple T- Shirt eh?

Tom, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, it is lunchtime and I spent good money on that sandwich. Lingering too long over Pete's nipple top would have violently emetic effects.

Emma, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[b3ta (home of fucksocks as mentioned up thread) just got listed on the register so it has crashed. grrr.]

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha nobody can include me in this thread because there are no pictures of me on the interweb!

Whenever I think of Brian and Ned I think matching outfits, because I remember that they would both have indie/rawk t-shirt, shorts and the same kind of shoes and everything. I didn't remark on it then because I thought it might sound impertinent, but I am saying so now but I am taking pains to point out that I do not mean anything by it. I'm just sayin....

Nicole, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You might be onto something there. But that means I have TWO twins. Amazing!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Baran = oversized T-shirt; Ewing = Smock, yes, that's the word; Sinker = lime green!; Skidmore = suit, yes; Anthony = pink cardigan?; Nicky D = improbably-coloured trousers; Stevie T = Japanese whispers.

Raggett and the pinefox = only people who still wear Catherine Wheel T-shirts.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't wear improbably coloured trousers anymore. I'm into improbable patterns.

N., Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan = Harvard sweater

Chris, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha I only have one Harvard sweatshirt and I hardly ever wear it! If you'd said "green pants" (either jeans or slacks), I'd worry that you were stalking me.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan is a vision of green. He is the green man.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew L has proved how much attention I pay to clothes. It was only last night that I was out with many people from here, and I can only remember some ideas of what kind of thing two people were wearing, and one of those was because someone said something about it being "the black clothes corner" or some such and I noted that Tim actually had a dark green shirt on.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you'd said "green pants" (either jeans or slacks), I'd worry that you were stalking me.

Dan, are you Mr. Green Jeans? If so, that would explain Ned's appearance on Captain Kangaroo.

Nicole, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's all too clear now.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally = tartan skirt; for Otis I can't shake the image of his baroque Halloween ruffles and white wig; Daddino = Hawaiian shirt and army/navy surplus shorts; Momus = flares and something that buttons; Sean C will forever be wearing a gas-station attendant's shirt; Rosemary Gilbert will always have on her shoes that I think are Converse but not really, plus loads of iridescent eye stuff; Dave M = piercing eyes! i forget the clothes!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chicagoans, New Yorkers, and Ned are all stuck in whatever they were wearing when I met them.

nabisco is stuck in his cool Nose sneakers. rosemary will be stuck in whatever she is wearing when we meet up tomorrow! Choose wisely.

In my imagination nathalie is stuck in something experimental by Ann Demeulester. Ned is stuck in a MBV t-shirt. anthony is stuck in a pink shirt and bespoke worsted suit. josh is stuck in his Dr. Martens sandals and not much else, I'm afraid./creep*

*any similarities between the immediately preceeding paragraph and persons in real life are purely coincidental. You will just have to meet me in order to disabuse me of these misconceptions.

duckling: turtleneck jerseys, ribbed tights or PINK tights
maryann: brown pants

di, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am unsure as to what exactly a grey button up is, but I don't think I've ever worn one.

RickyT, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevie = white socks, Pinefox = purple jumper, Carsmile = Fire! shirt, Starry = black tights.

I like the phrase 'melted to death'.

Ally C, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm too stylish to be pinned down.

jel --, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned-Hipster Cali Band T

Hm...I *am* wearing an Xtra Large T-shirt, but that strikes me as more 'obscure' than 'hipster.'

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
Time for an update (and I can namecheck all my NYC bitches, too, heh):

rosemary: purple Paul Frank t-shirt
Mary: Shiska dreamgirl Aran wool sweater and plaid pleated skirt
Matos: black rimmed glasses, black jeans
Andy B.: 501s
bnw: MFA grad school-issue Chuck Taylors
Tracer: BMX jacket, natch
Paul Eater: crew-neck sweater & plaid flanned button-down combo
geeta: sparkly head scarf
Jody Beth: Mrs. Robinson feline print coat
Daddino: Rocket from the Crypt stylee hipster shirt
Sci-Fi Paul: DJ bag
Jen: red lipstick
Ally: Prada bag

some of the above may be fictional, but they are assigned suchlike so too bad.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 13 January 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

"flanned" is a typo. I meant flaneur.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 13 January 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Shiksa, not shiska, although she *is* tasty.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 13 January 2003 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, I was hoping you meant a shirt smeard with flan.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Do me! Do me!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 13 January 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread's taken an intriguing turn.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 January 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Screw you Dan for cross-posting and ruining my much-better response to that!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 13 January 2003 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

*sniffles, dabs at a tear* I've actually met some of you, yet apparently I make no impression. What's up with that? *retreats to isolated corner*

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 13 January 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I was hoping you meant a shirt smeard with flan.

that's not flan

/Dang Perry

felicity (felicity), Monday, 13 January 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary wears schoolgirl skirts? Next thing you know she'll be covering her teeth when she laughs and taking pictures of everyone.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 13 January 2003 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

and she'll be attracted to Momus

felicity (felicity), Monday, 13 January 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

j.lu, I have never met you but I think I have already mentioned that I associate you with a Carolina blue cashmere twinset and matched pearls.

(p.s. Sorry for the delay with the various feast days on the Anthony 2003 calendar. Maybe we should just forge ahead with whatever's on that thread as an equitable compromise to avoid hurt feelings?)

felicity (felicity), Monday, 13 January 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, Sarah, in my mind you are wearing a sparkly Stratocaster and a red and white contrast-sleeve softball shirt with a Galaxie 500 logo, but perhaps that's overly influenced by the photo about the new indie/emo fashion the kids today are wearing.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 13 January 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmmm, cashmere...

I actually will be wearing a black silk/cashmere twinset shortly, because I have a job interview later today. Wish me luck!

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 13 January 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

good luck!

felicity (felicity), Monday, 13 January 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr. Noodles and his Jonny Cat T-shirt.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, what are you saying about me?

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

That you are wearing a flaneur shirt.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Do me again!

ha ha

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

rainbow belts! Because on the picture thread you had one. Me?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris V-
Dress shirt, deliberately untucked.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

yes deliberately! I like em that way. Covers my big arse. Tucked, when going somewhere tuckable.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

!!!!!

Chris V tucks in his shirt during nookie!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

in the crack of my ass.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh, I missed this thread -- j. lu, how did the interview go?
