Lists are a contentious issue. I like lists. Must find my old "top five lists of anything" thread!

Top Five Lists of Anything!

wow that is a great thread - is nasal sex a thing for the disabled or the unfortunate

I hate making lists, though sometimes reading other people's can be really interesting and fun. It's just not in me to compile a list, I don't really assign things value in that way.

Nicole, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ironically (as its my list that seems to have prompted this thread), i'm not much of a list person myself. i like some commentary to go with them really (partly why that list on ilm is just a list is because i wanted some other people to provide the commentary). having said that, lists are hugely useful for, like, downloads and stuff.

thinking about it some more, i did very much like lists when i was a child. perhaps i feel slightly guilty about lists (implication that theres not enough, maybe its a cop out etc). they can be somewhat inscrutable as well, they don't often offer any way to interact. they just are. like easter island statues, sentinals gazing sternly yet blankly. the lists don't listen

as always though, depends on the context. lists in with other stuff, changing the style of the conversation, can be good too...

gareth, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so i suppose they are classic when you can read more into them, when they aren't just cold and 'there'.

gareth, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Exactly. If I read a list of Q's top 100 albums it wouldn't mean anything to me, because it would just have a few sentences of piffle on how "seminal" each album is. Whereas fred recently posted his top 100 of the moment, and while the list had a lot of albums that wouldn't be out of place on a Q list it was a hell of a lot more interesting because he explained the personal associations of each album to him.

Nicole, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but damn if we want to read peoples thought and emotions we obviously dont turn to a list - if i want a pizza i dont want a guide tellin me how the cheese was matured - i wanna know whats on it - quickly and to the point - lists are great for this

born clippy, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ha, i thought freds list was the q list!

gareth, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, I really am trying to not to pick on anybody, least of all fred.

Nicole, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

born clippy, what do you get out of lists though? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm just curious.

Nicole, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lists to me are structured and uniform - like symmetrical numbers - i like the order and i like the mass of info contained in one bit - its like finding someones shopping list in the basket you use - i enjoy that.

read in to this what you will im not a tory or a prison warder

born clippy, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a good answer, it makes sense to me. It is just one of those things I wonder about, the appeal of lists.

Nicole, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lists are good because:

1) there's physical evidence of the things you're trying to remember
2) you can use list-making to put off actually DOING anything
3) if it's a to-do list you can check things off and feel accomplished
4) if it's not you can just look at it and feel accomplished for making it

Maira, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To-do lists I understand (and often make), it's the best-of type lists that I just don't seem to get.

Nicole, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

c'mom nicole - have you never made a top 5 list - looked at it and just felt satisfied with your selection

born clippy, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Nicole, I can never see the point of doing lists in order of preference. Lists to remind me of stuff are great though esp. pre holiday lists as they enhance the excitement. Also Xmas lists.

Emma, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was drinking last night in this bar in a sports club where my mate works and he locked up and let us raid the bar and eventually the discussion came round to music and the two guys, both very good friends of mine wouldn't accept that I couldn't name my 5 albums I liked, or attempt to put any order of preference into my tastes.

Ronan, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Call yerself a man Ronan?

Pete (2001 Ronan baiting version), Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha one of them is a bit like that (though in a genuine not dickhead type way) and he was like "well I'd have to say Elvis, noone will ever rival yadda yadda" and then I realised we were heading towards me saying something and them thinking "we care even less than we understand" so I suggested a game of pool.

Ronan, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A big list. Not something I regularly do -- indeed, part of the whole exercise was trying to figure out what the ranking would be for anything, and sometimes it was whim.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like lists per se anymore. I did when I was 14 and wanted to know which old albums to buy. I still play boy listy games with certain friends when we're bored. Partly cause it's silly and partly cause it prompts discussion about the things we list.

If you're on a band fan's mailing list, the most boring thing in the world is someone popping up to list without annotation their favourite songs by the band. I mean can anyone explain to me why that would be interesting to anyone? Why do people do it?

N., Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Happens on the Oasis list a lot, N. -- after prompting from me, the reasons come out, and often they're quite interesting to read. :-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

its funny this topic is being discussed right now since i just finished making/revising these huge album lists of the 90s which i would post somewhere but i don't think anyone cares. its more fun to argue about them in real life anyway

V, Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

List with extensive commentary. I'm with N. to the letter.

david h(0wie), Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

5th or 6th message down: Sounds of the New West. Won't let me link directly for some reason.

david h(0wie), Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I should never link to that page. I know, I am a thief.

david h(0wie), Tuesday, 30 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In other circles in which I move, I am infamous for long lists of favourites and that sort of thing. I think a lot of people like doing them, but don't much care for reading those of others (unless well annotated), but I like them generally.
