Sure, he was Brainy...and thinking up the Theory of Relativity, and E=MC2 ............but *APART* from that?....

gazza, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

He was one of the most outspoken pacifists of the century.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

YES, but *APART* from that.

gazza, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

He completed Treasure Island Dizzy in record time.

Lynskey, Friday, 20 September 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Did he stick his tongue out a lot? I think it was a gland thing.

Graham (graham), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

he invented a new hair style.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

and he had tea with marilyn monroe too.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

His PhD was on capillary action, bizarrely.

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

just cos he dance the einstein-a-go-go that don't mean he's a ho no

Alan (Alan), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

the photoelectric effect!

dave k, Friday, 20 September 2002 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he was anti-Zionist as well. RoXoR.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

inspired the nickname of countless 'eggheads'.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Albert Brooks' (the comedian and filmmaker) real name is Albert Einstein.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

He grew up in australia, invented electric guitar, cut his hair in a bowl and boinked mary curie, I know because TV told me so

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Taught at Princeton did he not? Worked in a patent factory when he was young.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

he was at one of those think-abt-physics institutes at Princeton. Also, he did lots of cool stuff with time & gravity.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

''Taught at Princeton did he not? Worked in a patent factory when he was young.''

noodles me thinks you should know a bit more than that.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein" - Joe 'ow, my leg' Theismann

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 20 September 2002 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

He liked to Skateboard

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 20 September 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

he gave the first good explanatory model of how brownian motion works.

he was also important in the development of quantum mechanics, particularly with the challenge in the paper with podolsky and rosen. I really couldn't explain it accurately from memory though. :(

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 September 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

He inspired some awful bumperstickers.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 21 September 2002 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

noodles me thinks you should know a bit more than that.

But I thought thats what the question was.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 21 September 2002 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

He taught me how to read and write. He had a pet tortise named Ned. He revolutionised the poultry industry by inventing the chicken-press.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 21 September 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently - and unlike most of this thread, this is true (or, at least, part of the good read which is E=mc2) - he routinely masturbated about a dozen times a day = Proof that jerking off is good/bad for you, I wonder?

The book mentioned above states that the equation E=mc2 came reasonably early in his career and was really the culmination of others' work. His main contribution to science, supposedly, was making the equation of practicable value...through things like hypothesizing nuclear fission etc.

debaser (debaser), Saturday, 21 September 2002 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

He had a pet tortise named Ned.

I fear for my soul.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 September 2002 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"hmmm e=????.........ummm....wait a second!...IVE GOT IT MC2!!!...right, thats me, Im off for a quick wank."

gazza, Saturday, 21 September 2002 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

How do you know he didn't jerk off and think physics simultaneously?

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 21 September 2002 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

He was in this movie w/ Marilyn Monroe.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 21 September 2002 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Golly, thats a mindfuck Andrew, literally I guess.

gazza, Sunday, 22 September 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

He played the violin and had a similar name to the musicologist Alfred Einstein.

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Sunday, 22 September 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

A mathematical expression of Brownian motion.

isadora, Sunday, 22 September 2002 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

More interestingly, what did he do to deserve becoming the instant shorthand for egg-head? Deserve-good and deserve-bad.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 23 September 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

he became shorthand for egg-head by being a scientist with messy and iconic hair, and a catchphrase everyone could remember. steven pinker is trying with the hair thing also but he's too groomed.

angela (angela), Monday, 23 September 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the idea of E=mc2 (can't do the little high-up 2 here) as a catchphrase, like Einstein walking out on stage at a conference and shouting "E equals M C squared" and everyone laughing and cheering.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

where's me unified field theory?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember when all this were unified fields.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking sides: E = mc2 vs E = h nu. Latter probably more important in the context of 20th century physics; former definitely catchier, well, catchy enough for Mick Jones to write a song about it.

B:Rad (Brad), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Allegedly there's a quote from a contemporary scientist to the effect that if Einstein hadn't discovered the Special Theory of Relativity, it wold have come along anyway in another few years. If he hadn't discovered the General Theory, we'd still be in the dark in 2016.

Interestingly a bit of googling shows that the first statement by itself turns up a lot in "Art=invention science=discovery" arguments.
