II is probably a better movie but I'm voting IV because Spock nerve pinches the dude with the ghetto blaster.
V was the first one I saw in the theater - even age 8-9 I remember thinking it was the worst thing I'd ever seen
VI I have a soft spot for - "first star on the left, straight on til morning," Kirk flirting with the hermaphrodite alien on the prison planet
The scene in First Contact where Data gets o-face when the Borg Queen blows on his new skin is awkward
I don't remember Nemesis at all - Picard's clone? wtf

i might actually vote for VI, just because it feels like such a good, solid, dignified sendoff for the original cast. haven't watched it since i was about 13 but i vividly remember getting choked up at the end when kirk says 'this is the final voyage of the starship enterprise...'

V is definitely the worst one (tho i haven't seen nemesis or insurrection), but the first one's probably the hardest one to sit through.

I don't understand the massive love for IV, aside from it being a comedy after a fairly grim III, but about 40% of it is lousy comedy.

IV isn't all that great and Motion Picture and III are underrated. I'd watch II, III, and VI any day of the week.
First Contact is the only TNG one worth any attention.

the thing I really hate about 3 is that you don't get classic spock or bones interactions for most of it. prob better as an actual movie than 5 but at least that has lots of shatner lols going for it. I love how multiple characters keep talking about how cool captain kirk is in that one.

First Contact is passable.

'Worst' would actually be a pretty interesting poll - in my mind it'd have to be between the ill-thought-out V, the maliciously stupid Generations, and the ''feature length TV episode with questionable ethical conclusions'' Insurrection. Never saw Nemesis though so I dunno.

Voting Khan because come ON. Love for IV is certainly justified. Haven't seen I or III since I was a kid, should give them another go. I remember the first one being just incredibly SLOW which I think I'd be more likely to find a virtue at my age. VI holds up decently, I watched most of that a few years ago and while there is some total crap it manages real excitement in a few places, and ''...Fire!'' is one of Shatner's most perfectly-delivered hams.

I sorta like generations with some major reservations. main one being that it's total garbage but it's still sorta fun and has shatner riding horses for some reason and hanging out in cool cabin and "time is predator that stalks us / no! it is a companion that travels with us!" or w/e

I feel like insurrection/nemesis are easily the worst of the lot. not even enjoyable as camp, just completely dour and devoid of joy. I remember disliking nemesis the most of the two but they kinda blur together in my mind.

Insurrection is just so ugly to look at, serious TV soap direction going through the motions. Plot feels the same way. At this point I'd be more interested in watching Final Frontier again.

yup. also helps that just from an aesthetic standpoint, I'll happily watch just about any 70s sci-fi flick.

Insurrection is a boring two-part episode that would be one of the worst of the series. Nemesis is a half-hearted "inspiration" of Wrath of Khan with Picard's crazy clone plot, Troi getting mind-raped, and dune buggies. Oh yeah, and it's the send-off movie for TNG. Nemesis is the worst hands-down

generations definitely has its moments but i've always wished they'd come up with a better way for kirk to die, seems like such a missed opportunity to have him just fall off a rock or whatever.

Star Trek vi would have been a good movie to kill off Kirk in especially since they hinted at it in the tng episodes that nimoy appears in to promote the movie.

can't lie, this really makes me want to re-screen. but it's also a good thing that lynch turned down return of the jedi, y'know? the horror stuff in first contact just didn't work for me last time I watched. didn't go far enough to be more than just strangely out of place for a trek movie iirc.

i think i'm voting vi even tho i said upthread i didn't like it. it panders to me with the chernobyl/1989 stuff and ultimately it's not as cool as i want it to be given that premise but it's still pretty cool. "captain hikaru sulu." christopher plummer asking mccoy if his hands shake. kirk's secret racism. low bar, obviously, but has there been a spaceship movie since that was About even half as much shit?

iii is underrated but also a huge missed opportunity. SPOCK POSSESSES BONES. this should be all of me in space and with more emotions. instead the best thing we get out of it (the best thing we get out of the entire movie) is the totally sublime line "that vulcan son of a bitch! it's his revenge for all those arguments he lost!" but also the "you klingon bastard, you've killed my son" scene is king of all the shatner line-blurring between lol and heavy: the way he staggers back into his chair, repeats the line three times, hangs his head, takes several seconds, pulls himself together, raises his head, sets his gaze to Steely, and says "you klingon bastard."

ii clearly the best but whatever.

no -- nimoy originally only agreed to do WoK because they were going to kill off spock, since he was sick of doing the character, then changed his mind and asked them to find some way to bring him back, which they were obv very happy to do.

There were a few factors at work there. The studio wanted to make TWOK the last movie as they didn't think ST movies were a big enough box office drawn. Nimoy wanted to work on other projects (particularly directing). The writers thought that if TWOK was going to be the last movie then it'd be a good send off to the character and the franchise. Nobody involved thought that the movie was going to be as successful as it was.

I think V was the first Trek movie I saw in the theater. It was not an auspicious start.

I think Galaxy Quest and TWoK are pretty much equal in quality as the greatest films.

TMP is indeed a snooze, but I'm far more grossed out by the 6 votes for the reboot than the 5 it got.

TNG is my favourite Star Trek TV series, but I never thought much to the movies... that scene in Generations where Data is all like "I just love scanning for lifeforms" is just really daft.

My bf tells me that Search For Spock was released 29 years ago today, which only makes me feel old due to it being one of the very first movies that I remember playing on cable all the time when I was little.

Watched about 75-90 mins of VI on blu-ray last night before nodding off (it was late; my husband has this thing about starting movies at like 12:30 AM), and from what I saw, it seemed to be one of the better plotted of the films that I've seen, meaning I guess that one doesn't have to be a Trekkie (which my husband is, and I am not) to get into the story--which, as Ebert rather astutely points out, borrows far more from Agatha Christie than it does from any of its blockbuster contemporaries. What I couldn't get over, though, was how ugly the film looked, and not in the way that a JJ Abrams movie (to pick a convenient example) is ugly. Like, the film is just really cheap looking, as it were shot for television; whatever the individual qualities of the other ST movies I've seen, I cannot remember any of them not looking (for lack of a better word) filmic. Is this a case of high def casting an unflattering light on an older film, or do people remember this looking crappy at the time? The film just doesn't seem to be up to what I would assume were the standards of a big studio picture circa 1991.

It looks like a scifi film from 1991 to me.

i think the budgets went (relatively) down the longer the original-cast films continued.

I think a lot of the sets were redresses of TNG. Helicopter shot of ice prison planet seemed filmic enough, though.
Also, isn't the plasma ring explosion in every movie thereafter (even in Star Wars) where a planet explodes named after the one in this movie?

I recently rewatched all of the TNG movies, and I gotta say First Contact and Insurrection still looked really good. IMO Insurrection's plot failings are largely (though not fully) saved by Jonathan Frakes' visual imagination. The opening scene in particular, with the invisible Data causing chaos, is a lark! The first TNG movie still looks like an extended episode of the series though, and the last one is just a generic sci-fi flick of its era, visually.

Too bad Frakes didn't manage to parlay the success of First Contact into a proper movie director career, he would've had the potential for it. I guess he'll always been known as the Star Trek guy, though it's nice that he's become a respected TV director at least.

i watched v for the first time last night. one of those movies i can't believe anyone filmed or allowed to be released, so it was total catnip for me, i loved every frame

I mean...I think I've seen both of them enough times now to say I enjoy the first one more. Khan is a real good feature-length ST episode, though.

Look, I think it's well-established by now that my taste is highly-questionable if not altogether nonexistent. Deal with it. I'm learning to.

the key is not say some things are overrated, thus elevating the things you like by knocking down other things. better to highly rate the things you like.

on that tip i really love the warp sequence in TMP. it's something they tend to gloss over while zipping around at near-lightspeed-levels but in the first movie it's a real visceral "brace yourselves!" moment.

The hubby wanted to watch a Star Trek last night and we went with Insurrection because it was one of the ones I was sure I hadn't seen. I didn't know until afterwards that fans generally rated it so low, and I guess I both can and cannot see why. It's an entirely mediocre but not unwatchable film, indifferently directed by Frakes--a should-be suspenseful scene in a cave doesn't even bother trying to work up any tension--which is surprising, given that I recall his work on First Contact being well regarded. The premise is decent, though, and the whole thing basically felt like a so-so episode of TNG. The only thing I found embarrassing was the schmaltzy business between Data and the kid.

Also, I made the mistake of looking up Siskel and Ebert's heartbreaking review this morning, in which Gene, clearly in bad shape and at that point only a few months away from death, talks about how he'd like to go live on the film's regenerative planet. The Yoda zing is pretty funny, though.
