So what do you think. Do they change opinons or are they just silly.

The local college station produces their own spots -- topics have included throwing out toothbrushes after recovering from colds (ans: that's not how you tend to get reinfected, so don't bother). I suspect they try an' make 'em silly.

Changed my opinion of pylons from 'beautiful' to 'scary'.

KUCI has to read or play three an hour, and our production department became notorious for perverting as many of the prerecorded ones as possible. Different background music, chopping them up, and so forth. We created some of our own too, my own moment of triumph being Mr. Spock advising Captain Kirk, aka station friend Seth Goldhammer, on the wisdom of wearing bike helmets. Strange, but true.

ITV and Channel 4 both show PSAs very late at night, or rather early in the morning.

Kites + Electricity Pylons = loud bang & sombre warning.

I've never seen anyone react positively to a PSA. They always end in eruptions of laughter or a "That was so stupid" comment. I doubt they help at all - I mean, how could it help? It's a comedy, particularly anti-smoking ads geared towards teens. I mean, the kids in the ads are so patently uncool that upon seeing them it makes me want to light up another one.

twelve years pass...

Had a weird memory resurface from the early 80s. I would have been under 5 years old at the time, so I can't remember if this was something I actually saw, or whether it was a dream or my imagination. It was a PSA by Cricket Lighters, featuring a cartoon cricket, probably this guy:

But instead of a peppy jingle, the commercial panned across a home interior that had been completely burnt out, with a somber message about lighter safety. Although I haven't thought about it in quite some time, the idea really shook me up as a young child, and I thought about it quite a bit back then.

It looks like there was at least one lawsuit against the company at the time, which might have compelled them to release such a PSA: https://www.oklahoman.com/story/news/1984/04/11/lighter-not-to-blame-appeals-court-rules/62807336007/

I haven't looked too deeply for the actual video yet. This British one is close, with the camera crawling over the burnt-out house, but might be more terrifying than the one I remember:

It's a British Public Service Announcement, of course it's more terrifying.
