serious question here.
i know about the dolphin stories, and elephants, and the apes etc...but is that it? and is it only mammals that do this?
i cant think of any reptiles, for example, that are known to behave in this social kind of way.
anyone know?

One species of ants in Africa will actively defend its tree... so inter-kingdom action right there. Probably ants and aphids too -- any time you have a mutually symbiotic relationship, I'd wager there'll be assistance.

Supposedly geese in flight will rearrange themselves within the vee formation to help a weakened member.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

how do geese get weakened members?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Wolves? Jackals?

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

By which I mean that I think wolves and jackals are the gangs of the natural world, not that they go around causing some harm to goose penises

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

how do geese get weakened members?

I don't know; I'm not a management consultant and I can't be arsed to listen closely when m. cons. trot out this metaphor of teamwork.
