writers: what is your rate?

i live in the bay area and there's a writing job/contract work thingy i wanna try for. but it asks for hourly rate or per word. i have no idea what the going rate is (particularly per word) and i dont want to ruin my chances by guessing way high. can anyone give me some ballpark #'s? or any general advice about how to approach this (it involves editing/updating pre-existing copy)? thanks

in britain there are 'offical' rates agreeed with the National Union of Journalists. A good place to start would be the US equivalent?

Between 11 and a 1/2 pence and 30 pence a word. But people in the US get a better deal usually, so sorry, that's utterly useless.
