Just thought I'd ask.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 21 October 2002 08:51 (twenty-three years ago)

We are waiting for Momus to recontextualize it. Also it's been mentioned 442,544,145.26 times already.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 21 October 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I've not heard it.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

The Str*ets = the Jamie Oliver of garage.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I love how Dom comes up with a new insult for each Strebts thread.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The last group I heard which was so ubelievably hyped that left me this cold was The Strokes.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm nothing if not consistent, Tom.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Str*ets = the Jamie Oliver of garage. "

This reminds me of how in my stillborn garage MCs article I described Genius Kru as the garage crew most likely to appear on The Naked Chef. This was not intended to be a flat-out insult though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 21 October 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Str*ets = the Jamie Oliver of garage. "

you're comparing with regards to their fresh attitude, somewhat unorthodox approach and proficiency at their chosen medium i can only assume

blueski, Monday, 21 October 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. Yes, that's exactly the reason.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 21 October 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Original Pukka Marinade
You're listenin' to the Sporks
Lockdown your oven

For this ain't a rice sack
Pull out your sack and sit back
Whether you white or black
Smoke salmon, char prawn, or toot haddock

Bob's your uncle etc...

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 21 October 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth (gareth), Monday, 21 October 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

J0hn Darn13ll3, Monday, 21 October 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, you see, because it sucks...

Dan I., Monday, 21 October 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not unmentionable; it's unspeakable.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 21 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

KILLING JOKE????????

bob snoom, Monday, 21 October 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy is a wonderful man. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't even heard it all yet! It comes out here tomorrow. I feel like such a dick, haha.

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Monday, 21 October 2002 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

its great in a crap kinda way, more for the idea rather than the execution

blueski, Monday, 21 October 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Come heat or no the buttah flows... Stop screaming, my greens're steaming... I do the science on my Hotpoint, get my potatos mashed up... You'll bear witness to some amazing meats... Bravery in the face of much heat, all line up and grab your leeks... My grills are dirty, my beets are clean... I cook 'em at 90 degress Fahrenheit (didn't have to change that one)... Oliver's Pukka Marinade, lock down your oven.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 21 October 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

PotatoEs, etc.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 21 October 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heated prime cutlets on the highest setting
These meats pose no threat on my rotisserie

[OKAY DONE NOW, PROMISE.]

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 21 October 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoyed that more than I've enjoyed any Streets track I've heard (Stanton Warriors remix of "Has It Come To This?" aside). MC Pitman is WAY WAY WAY better.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 October 2002 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

So Andy, you do have a band, yes? :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 October 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

No Ned haha but I once tried out without success for the Meatls.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I did recontextualise the Streets. It was an accident. I did a cover version, for my new album, of an old Rob Wilton number called 'Back Answers'. This is British variety music hall from the 40s. It's all comedy badinage with a kind of Pinterian undertow of violent menace:

He sez 'I'll punch yer 'ed!'
I sez 'Whose?'
He sez 'Yours!'
I sez 'Mine?'
He sez 'Yes!'
I sez 'Oh?'
He sez 'Wanna fight?'
I sez 'Who?'
He sez 'You!'
I sez 'Me?'
He sez 'Yes!'
I sez 'No!'
etc

I gave it a big thumping beat, which of course Rob Wilton never did. And it sounded exactly like Der Streets. Which suggests to me that this band is in the great British variety comedy tradition. There!

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

well, duh

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

When Mr Skinner gives it some of the "A pint? That's nearly an armful!", then I'll start listening.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy, surely you mean:

For this ain't a spice rack
Pull out your sack and sit back...

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

you are all wrong, except for momus - right on the button.

opm is the most original album released this year or any year in recent memory. nothing matches it for sheer wit, suss and emotional pull.

mike skinner is a poet.

the album is pure genius.

it makes me laugh and cry.

let's push things forward.

hugh ogilvie, Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hugh most of us adore the Streets (I remember mentioning them to Momus in some argument ages ago and getting a who-they response from him, heh) - it's just we've had a grillion threads about them and all the people who like them are too tired to say anything else.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

fair enough - i only found out about this thread/site last night. still there is no other album...

hugh ogilvie (hugh ogilvie), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

It's my favourite record this year too.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

will there be an ILX vote to decide the rec of the year to verify this 'most of us think this is grabt' Tom?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

a top 10 albums, say, in december.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Only if you want ILX deleted when the results come out Julio. Some things man was not meant to know.

(OK I do actually think about doing this every year and then decide not to. What does anyone think bearing in mind polls are always awful.)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

''(OK I do actually think about doing this every year and then decide not to. What does anyone think bearing in mind polls are always awful.)''

I don't think much of them either. a democratic decision on artistic worth does suck big time!

but you're saying that most ppl in ILX 'adore' this rec, so maybe we should do a poll.

''Only if you want ILX deleted when the results come out Julio. Some things man was not meant to know.''

unfortunately i do not have Graham's awesome powa!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think a poll will be necessary since the consensus should be pretty easy to figure out. Just piece together the 12 different threads.

(What's more, I'm sure I'd be late to the party -- just like last year. Second week of December! Ouch!)

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio I meant 'most of us on this thread' - i.e. the people pissing about doing the Jamie O take-offs etc. I'm under no illusions about the rest of you philistines!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

by calling me 'philistine' do you intend to insult me? I need to play you some borbetomagus at the focus group as payback.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom calls you a Philistine because you remind him of the scrappy Len Dykstra.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

andy- stop the in jokes or i'll kidnap ya and get you to listen to some squealing sax dude!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

a top ten sounds good - at least it might throw up some interseting choices rather than the usual sunday times /mojo let us worship at the alter of mainstream / oasis etc.. polls. having said that 'little by little' is a return to form... discuss : is liam gallagher a decent vocalist ? ? my opinion - no, he's a chancer and venerated by the music press for no good reason - put his voice up against , for example , paul westerberg ( well, praps that's unfair!!).

carry on troops - opinions are like blah blah blah.

has anyone heard the new flaming lips lp - i thought the single was a thing of incandescent beauty ... can anyone recommend any good new releases or is that on another strand?!

hugh ogilvie (hugh ogilvie), Thursday, 24 October 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

you should futz about with the search function at the bottom of the page as there's a butt-load of great info here (and tons on flaming lips).

Also, I'm seeing the Streets tonight in L.A. yay!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 24 October 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i am upset as i missed the Streets when he came here. Geezers need fake ids.

Honda, Thursday, 24 October 2002 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

When I briefly got access to the panoply of riches that is soulseek, I actually compiled up the "Best Album of the first 2/3 of 2002" thread, and the Streets did win. Mind you geofuckinggaddi came second.

Also, I think those sort of threads on ILM == classic, as without that I'd never have heard Xinlisupreme (also Farben, er um).
