"what distinguishes the personas of jadakiss, styles p, fabolous, cam'ron and the clipse guys?"

minna asked this on the tom petty thread and i think it is a fun and interesting question.

I can only really do a few myself, as I've never bothered with the "personas" of half these guys as I think they're not all really good at the persona thing.

cam'ron does "persona" great on "hey ma" though, which is really i think a summary of how he presents himself on the whole album (which is the first where he's all that interesting) -- he's got a real natural feel to him, like he's not a dealer or all that hard, but just chills with his boys and tools around the city acting suave and getting laid. in the "new york city" track he feels very small compared to jay, and to the city itself, like the track rests on the anthem of the city and the zoomed closeup of a pedestrian at home in the city, an organic if incidental part. like a really good background actor in barbershop or something, eh?

fabolous has a "pretty boy" feel, like he's out of nowhere and noveau-riche and living it while it lasts. the fan picked to front van halen or such, y'know? i don't think this is quite intentional.

who wants to take it from here?

clipse = ultimate of pharrel's laconic ennui fuck you thing. deliberate, monotone, empty sounding with the occasional flash of steeled wit. ("if i wasn't Able, i'd be slingin' Kane"). defined by the personas they're not. comparisons w vast aire would be a little deficient but you get the drift.

yeah, fabolous fancies himself a loverman but the pouty chip-on-shoulder type he goes about it gets right up my back. i agree with sterling about cam'ron - he doesn't take himself NEARLY as serious as the other people mentioned here take themselves.

I like a Clipse's attempts at grittiness as a foil for flashy emoting pop stars - bar "Grindin" (which is mostly great due to the beat anyway) the Pusha T's best performances have been on the Neptunes remix of Backstreet Boys' "The Call", Justin's "Like I Love You" and Kelis's "Popular" - on all of them his flatly nasal delivery nicely punctures the drama, without coming on *too* heavy. On their own tracks I sort of miss that counterpoint action.

Jadakiss is like this but even more so - about the only full Jadakiss track I listen to regularly is The Lox's "Dope Money" - and then only because of that excellent line "So tell me which is the promised land, heaven or hell? Cos the niggas that made promises, most of them fell."
