Supertramp - Give A Little Bit

Tom was right about this song: it is indeed ravishing (wuv that word).

I think it's the best and most enduring *prog-pop* single as well (compare to how utterly trapped in the past even 10cc's best songs are): they needn't have done anything else after this, really.

"Owner Of A Lonely Heart" to thread!

And if you want prog-pop, check out Derrero - http://www.derrero.com/ - they're wondrous.

This song makes me want to barf.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It makes me want to barf tinsel.

Could anyone make this (sort of) record now and get a hit with it?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually just put this song on a mix cd last week, leading right into Kylie Minogue and preceeded by Eminem. Every good mix needs a strange wake-up call somewhere in the middle.

even thinking about supertramp makes my teeth itch and takes me back to a time when every band had at least one bearded guy named roger.

sorry Charlie - I don't get 80s prog-pop (although I quite like Oldfield & Reilly's "To France", but that's more of an improbable Sandy Denny / OMD meeting point) because the production values are SO FUCKING HORRIBLE: they remove all the pre-corporate, pre-globalisation charm that something like "Give A Little Bit" has.

and that's why I don't think it could be a hit now, Tom. it sounds *period*, but yearningly so, in a good way (not the horrible 10cc way)

ah that reminds me of something I've wondered for years: is there ANYONE alive in Britain under 25 called Roger?

Fool's Garden.

Or maybe Scooter...

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 1 November 2002 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Fool's Garden!

I didn't like Supertramp at all when I was growing up and they were popular. "Give a Little Bit" was my in-road to liking them. Terrific single; the I-IV-V, acoustic guitar, organ, the harmonies...that's all you need, really (at least, for me).

Joe (Joe), Friday, 1 November 2002 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"in-road to liking them", oh christ i hope not. yeah 'cause i always hated them & then a couple years ago i picked up an old single of this & wow yeah yr correct it's great but i'm NOT gonna start liking "the logical song" or "dreamer" or "bloody well right" now....AM I?

I can't see myself ever really liking "Dreamer": the vocal is too punchable.

Fool's Garden were the ones who did "Lemon Tree", weren't they? Siegbran will be after me, but they weren't as good as Modern Talking.

I used to have a part time job in a photo laboratory. I distinctly remember the baking, airless basement with horrible chemicals and noisy machines, cretinous fellow-staff and a boss who, when not blasting Radio 1's Mike Read and Steve Wright shows, would put a particular Supertramp LP on repeat play, like every day. Does that sound appealing?

David (David), Friday, 1 November 2002 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I've actually never heard the Crime of the Century album! So, I've only heard bits and pieces of "Dreamer" and "Bloody Well Right"...

I will break with what I perceive is the majority opinion here among those who have heard it and say that I think Famous Last Words (their last album with Hodgson) is a great album. The whole first side is ace (okay, maybe "Bonnie" drags and the lyrics to "Put On Your Old Brown Shoes" is kinda lame, but etc...), and though I can't believe I'm actually admitting this in public, I really do like "My Kind of Lady".

Joe (Joe), Friday, 1 November 2002 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

David - if the album was "Breakfast in America" (as I rather imagine) it would have been unbearable, especially because the title song is infuriating even if you only hear it once. but repeated plays of the same albums *not chosen by yourself* always irritate, though they never quite leave the mind, cf what Tom wrote about his boarding school experiences.
