and from lost 1977 England, to ... *this*.

could "Golden Boys" possibly be any more perfect?

nope.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 31 October 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

is this a case of name-domination or does it really have this shimmery lustre to it? i keep thinking of gold cymbals!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

and yeah i know it's filled with anti-bling sentiment. still...

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

that's what I like about it Mitch: the *balance*

robin carmody (robin carmody), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

It reminds me a bit of what Tom said about Dead Prez's "Hip Hop": (to paraphrase): "they clearly haven't been listening to hip hop... but wait, they have!" Not that Res's dubbified funk-soul has much to do with contemporary R&B really (except "Bouncin' Back", "Work It Out", "Like I Love You" et. al maybe?) - but it's certainly not a shy retiring number like India.Arie or something is it.

I don't the song is really anti-bling - it sounds much more personal than that, more like Res is trying to ween herself off star fantasies by determinedly reciting all the falsities at their heart. "Girls like me" sounds a bit defensive - the girl doth protest too much.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It sounds like Res still buys the hype despite her protestations -- she knows deep down she's just like the girls who aren't inner-circle "girls like me." It's like "You're So Vain" -- as much a love song as it is an indictment.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Exactly Jody. I was wondering what song it reminded me of and "You're So Vain" is it definitely.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had this album for ages and the first four tracks are truly sublime.

*However*, it's the only time I've sort of fell out of love with something on finding out that the artist didn't actually pen any of the lyrics.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 1 November 2002 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

It's meta-pop. It isn't so much about GIRLS as it is about pop stars (and people who want to live that life). It is very much in the "Like I love you..." "I'm a slave for you" style. It is just classic all the way. It is a warning more to the pop stars than the fans. In a way she does sound slightly arrogant but you could see it as "Well, I have been(or am) there, and it isn't what it's cracked up to be." This song isn't anti-bling (if it is, only partially), it's about Pop, celebrities and the media.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 1 November 2002 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

pop, celebrities and the media: all very shiny

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 1 November 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

not much more to say other than this is my favourite single of the year, and the album is great, if uneven...

did she really not write her own lyrics, spencer?

sx

stevie (stevie), Friday, 1 November 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

It is actually one of the very few recent examples where finding out someone didn't write the lyrics really really surprised me.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 1 November 2002 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

pop, celebrities and the media: all very shiny

true. but then bling bling only covers one aspect - the jewellery. ;-)

hehehe tim, it is in the grain of the voice as barthes would say, not the words itself that matters so much.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 1 November 2002 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

the grain of the MUSIC is more important in this track; the sudden expansion from b&w to technicolor when the chorus comes in. a ztt record awaiting a morley sleevenote.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 1 November 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I only now FULLY realize this: how little we (or rather I) focus on the music itself when it comes to the message. I used to treat lyrics as though it was mere poetry. :-)

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 1 November 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Res because she sampled The Cure.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 November 2002 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Never even heard this person mentioned before! I'm really puzzled! Did this come out some time ago? I'm honestly surprised.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

On which song did Res sample the Cure??

She's lovely....I'll say that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 November 2002 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

It sounds like Res still buys the hype despite her protestations -- she knows deep down she's just like the girls who aren't inner-circle "girls like me." It's like "You're So Vain" -- as much a love song as it is an indictment.

It also reminds me of the Smiths' "Paint a Vulgar Picture" -- fan worship/fantasy vs. the bitterness of knowing the truth.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 November 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"Let Love" is based on the bassline to "Other Voices". She is wonderful.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 2 November 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Weblink or something, please!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 2 November 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh heh, "something" is coming right up. *wink, wink*

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 2 November 2002 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to say: "bah! no matter, the author's dead" but actually the "Golden Boys" writer sounds like she may be even cooler than Res herself: Santi White

Just listened to the first half of the album again and getting shivers down my spine again.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 3 November 2002 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"they say (vision)" is alt rock! i think.
