Has it possibly retro-dated for today's ironic hipsters? Was it actually inventive, in retrospect?
(I never saw the series, but I'd really love to, now)

Can anyone remember that "comedy" series that David Lynch did right after Twin Peaks? What was it called? Thoughts?

I always linked it in my mind with Randy Newman. Obviously, because he wrote all/most (?) of the songs. But more particularly because the programme captured what is best about Randy Newman's songs - giving people a voice.
The format of a cop show gave him a chance to write for a range of characters, often in opposition (criminal/victim etc), and he really captured the essential dramatic point of each one. Much as he did on, say 'Good Old Boys'.
And of course, it was like a traditional musical in that the innermost feelings of the characters are ONLY revealed in song, giving the songs much greater power.
