I hope to god you are actually talking about a real group and a real song title.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I am. And What a group. What a song!

Big Hogleg, Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, YOU HAVEN'T HEARD THIS?????????????????????????????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

As I remember, it went Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing for about four minutes and then stopped.

Ned, YOU HAVEN'T HEARD THIS?????????????????????????????

Never heard of it at all! The band name makes me think of Union Carbide Productions, of all things...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

God, this board is FANtastic.

Your description is quite right, EXCEPT taht for the last 10-15 seconds, a barely discernible bassline comes in to accompany the close of the song. It has NO equal. I've got it on casette somewhere.

Big Hogleg, Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember it well - in fact got it! And going to listen to it now

spreadlove, Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The best part is the breakdown where it goes POOOING POOOING POOOING POOOING POOOING POOOING POOOING POOOING at half-tempo, then revs back up.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The best thing was the radio ad that came out about a week after the song. It went:

Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing

Have a break, have a Kit Kat

Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing Poing

Genius.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure I have namechecked this song at least once in an ILX post before, but 'tis not showing up when I search for 'Poing' (wtf?). Posts from gareth and Siegbran are tho'.

Jeff W, Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Poing reached the number two position in the Dutch charts in '92. RTS discography.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 5 December 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

It's listed in the 'CDs we suggest you buy' bit on the Go-Kart Mozart album inlay, I think Lawrence may have snuck it (or something very similar) underneath "Wear Your Foghat With Pride" on the same album.

alexfack (alexfack), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember going into Street Sounds on Melrose when this came out. I literally heard three kids go up to DJ Barry Weaver who was sort of working there and each of them went up and said: "So dude, like there's this track that I'm looking for, and it's like this techno song and it goes like: 'Poing, Poing, Poing, Poing, Poing', disgusted, he would simply point to the row of Rotterdam Termination Source 12s that all had 'Poing' clearly written on them... Classic-ly annoying track!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Once heard, never forgotten, it made the UK top 30 too. I think it's sampled in the new song from Scooter (SCOOO-TAHHHH).

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 5 December 2002 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

is it paul elstak?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 5 December 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it's Maurice Steenbergen, but RTS was on the same label Rotterdam Records, with all the usual suspects of the early gabber years: Paul Elstak, Euromasters, Neophyte, Holy Noise, Hardliners, Lenny Dee, Sperminator.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 5 December 2002 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a great track. Didn't they have a Christmas song too?

ratty, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 05:26 (twenty years ago)

I remember this tune. Had a mate who went on about this amazing song(we all knew he had dodgy taste) finally he played it to us and we all fell about laughing. Especially when he said here is the good bit and it was just the same as the rest of it.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 05:28 (twenty years ago)

That's them????

It took FIVE people to make this track?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 05:29 (twenty years ago)

5 of them??? so not what i expected. apart from the BRICK WALL

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 05:30 (twenty years ago)

Well my guess is you have a Prodigy sitation here. One person is making the music and the other four are dancers and/or mc's, going 'Rave it to the maximum!' in Dutch accents.

ratty, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 05:42 (twenty years ago)

My guess is that the muso in this band is the one on the far right - does anyone know? My reasoning is that he looks a little introspective, and, for that matter, a little like Liam Howlett of the Prodge.

ratty, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 05:43 (twenty years ago)

poing!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 05:44 (twenty years ago)

my money's on the blonde.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 06:23 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Adam!

You know despite my claiming to be all knowing about this upthread, I had remembered it as someone actually saying "Poing" over and over. That'll teach me.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Whoa.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Momus, Lawrence Felt and Steve Wright, that's one unholy trinity.

2 columbus circle in 1964 (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:13 (twenty years ago)

poing.

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:14 (twenty years ago)

2 columbus circle in 1964 (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

new radicals are awesome!

howell huser (chaki), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

it's less that i like it than that i identify with it on a molecular level.

i'm interpreting this as "now that's what i call '90s alternasoundtrack megahitz" -- correct?

'Rotterdam Termination Source' are back, joining forces with 'Human Resource' to respark a new wave of Hardcore Old Skool. After a successful comeback appearence on Oct 4th in Zaandam, Holland, Maurice Steenbergen (RTS), Guido Pernet (HR) these forces have united to revive the still existant old skool scene. Along with 'T99' Vocalist Zeno Zevenbergen this looks like a unstoppable team ready to 'Dominate the World' once more

That's like the ultimate dream team!

"Poinginatorthesia" coming soon...

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:49 (twenty years ago)

YEAH I READ POING POING TOO

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:53 (twenty years ago)

me and Lawrence Denim trying to outdo each other in praise of this record's brilliance.
-- Momus (nic...), January 11th, 2006.

Where?

It was in my friend Douglas Benford's car, heading south down Great Portland Street, I believe. Lawrence was keen to incorporate some novelty sounds in the second Denim album.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 12 January 2006 04:10 (twenty years ago)

Fans of this should seriously check out Tok Tok's Tora Bora -- similar levels of tweaked-out cartoon poinginess, and really only slightly less single-minded about it.

I mean, look at the cover:

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 12 January 2006 06:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh sod it, why not...

The most interesting pieces of pop music trivia that you know (that are 100% false):

127. In a disused warehouse on the outskirts of Hilversum, 75 people are still dancing to "Poing" by the Rotterdam Termination Squad.

-- mike t-diva, July 12th, 2005.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

They did a follow up single (they took their time) which I remember had a track that was a strop against 2 Unlimited's "No Limit" which had elements of "Poing" in it.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:29 (twenty years ago)

"Merry X-Mess" that was it.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:34 (twenty years ago)

There's quite a few versions of "Poing".

The one under the YSI-link seems... funkier than the one I played incessantly summer of 1992. I think the 'Stuiterhouse' version is the one to get.

naranjito (Koens), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:44 (twenty years ago)

So I did some research and concluded: "Poing" counts exactly 265 poings. Defend/Refute.

Quinten, Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:05 (twenty years ago)

(Sorry, that link should have been this. Or check the discogs page.

naranjito (Koens), Thursday, 12 January 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Mike T-Diva - that was already quoted upthread!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

The producer of the track is still maing music and stuff. Check out his website: http://www.poing.com/maurice.php?cat=5

Not only that, but MTV Europe played it all the time during prime time. Can you imagine MTV playing anything like that today? (Supposing that they'd still play music videos, of course.)

They totally would, considering they're happily playlisting the shit out of Boten Anna and Gunther.

Their band shot had like five people in it, as I recall. I mean, really? There shouldn't even have been any humans in the band shot. Just a smiley face on a spring.
