Hey, you know that creep that settles in every year when you realize that you missed some of your actual favorites in your long-ago signed, sealed and delivered Best Of Year [X] list because you didn't hear them in time? I hate that.

So: this is the thread where you tip us to some of the best records from 2002 that you fear haven't been heard and/or talked about enough to warrant widespread attention.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably the Michael Gira live solo album I just got. But then again, I have to actually listen to it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll start:

Marz - Love Streams
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - Dap Dippin
Ekkehard Ehlers - Plays
Howard Hello - s/t
Greg Davis - Arbor
Dabrye - One/Three
Iron & Wine - The Creek Drank The Cradle

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Dammit Ned.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Omigod I just remembered I dreamt about you last. Weird.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

(mark p, I know a couple of those but descriptions of them would be much more helpful, you know?)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Ms John Soda - No P or D.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

oi! I have copyright on this thread subject, mark p!

Jeff W, Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Otomo Yoshihide New Jazz Ensemble - Dreams
Bob Drake - Skull Mailbox
VA - Improvised Music from Japan
Ellery Eskelin - 12+1 Imaginary Views
Acid Mothers Temple - In C
Rovo - Flage

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Omigod I just remembered I dreamt about you last. Weird.

*befuddled* I seem to keep popping up in ILX folks' dreams! Maybe I should hide.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Marz - Love Streams
I hasten to use the word 'folktronica' but, there it is. Nimbly-plucked acoustic guitars, burbling synths, some pretty DSPing, and song titles like "Everyone Had A Bad Year".

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - Dap Dippin
A late 60s soul rekkid that just happens to have been recorded in 2002. Brand new, you're retro etc etc.

Ekkehard Ehlers - Plays
Ehlers (aka Auch) re-envisions recordings from film (?) luminaries in broad circles and unfolding loops. Included mainly for the two John Cassavettes tracks, which rank among the most gorgeous things I've heard all year.

Howard Hello - s/t
Temporary Residence kids juggle vocal scraps and organic snippets, result not unlike Books - Thought For Food.

Greg Davis - Arbor
More slushy DSP overtop some yummy synths and well-defined melodies. Acoustic guitar works remind me of the stuff from Yokota's Images comp.

Dabrye - One/Three
The best of Tadd Mullinix' three albums by far. Wonked out hip-hop beats chug behind a seasick haze of melody and gonzo arrangements. The loping jazz bit on the album's lead track is the best Mr. Scruff song, like, ever.

Iron & Wine - The Creek Drank The Cradle
If this was any longer than 30 minutes I'd probably hate it, but as it is, it's near perfect. Q: Who needs more mopey, double-tracked, faintly-whispered bedsit acoustic stuff? A: I honestly didn't think I'd care, but I do.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

oi! I have copyright on this thread subject, mark p!

Oh no! Has this been done?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

What Yancey said, foax. Please scrape together some descriptions where you can.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Memory Jogger alert, have a look through: Best 2002 Albums Tracking webpage

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

okkervil river - don't fall in love with everyone you see
melancholy folk-rock-country-punk-something that sings the sludge of the river and burns the barn down. sublime.

damien rice - o
the best singer-songwriter album in recent years. pungent, soulful and a cohesive musical whole. brilliant.

16 horsepower - folklore
black and fierce and absolutelymoving.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

1. the Black Keys - the Big Come Up----fuzzed-out college boy stomp-blues like you wouldn't believe
2. K-OS - Exit---seriously talented Cdn rapper, just released in USA on Astralwerks, touring with India Arie (but don't hold it against him) will appeal to fans of Tribe, Fugees & Talib Kweli
3. James Luther Dickinson - Dixie Fried---I know his NEW album is also out, but it hasn't hit the frozen Cdn tundra yet, so this rerelease of his '72 alb will have to do. What Dylan would've done if he'd idolized Jerry Lee Lewis instead of Woody Guthrie.

that's it. Just three.

Emmet Matheson, Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

1. "How To Cut And Paste Volume 2" DJ Yoda- I cannot state enough how great this album is. I honestly haven't heard a mix album as good as this... ever. God as my witness, it works as a party album, as a chill album, as a background album, as an album to say "Hey, bet you've never heard anything like this" to people, an album to admire for its technical skills... it's just great.
2. Whatever the name of that Beatbox Saboteurs album is.
3. "Honey, Are You Ready For The Ballet?" Major Matt Mason USA

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 December 2002 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Trio Mocoto, Samba Rock. Three Brazilian funk musicians come out of retirement after 27 years and rip shit up all lovely-like. And I think the Tabla Beat Science live album has been unjustly ignored.

Matt C., Thursday, 5 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Ms John Soda - No P or D. - another boy/girl duo from Berlin, plink plonk pop. Yay!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Malk de Koijn: Sneglzilla (BMG)

Jay K (Jay K), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Green Theory's self-titled debut album. Ten songs, not even thirty minutes long, rowdy insane hardcore funk & floetry covered with gas, set on fire, and dropped out of an airplane without a parachute.

I promise I'm not in this band. ;)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Dabrye - One/Three
The best of Tadd Mullinix' three albums by far. Wonked out hip-hop beats chug behind a seasick haze of melody and gonzo arrangements. The loping jazz bit on the album's lead track is the best Mr. Scruff song, like, ever.

You're not getting this confused with the Eastern Developments record, are you? One/Three came out in June last year.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy my system at work says it came out THIS June! Hm.

The three records I was referring to were One Three, Instrmntls and Winking Makes A Face..

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Martian's list has it at 2002 as well!

But Allmusic lists it as 2001, which is weird, cause I distinctly remember both Dabrye records coming out at around the same time.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

[It could have been reissued/ repromoted? sometimes these things are hard to keep track of ! Also sometimes US releases are delayed in the UK]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

It had a really quiet initial release in 2001. I think they either had fresh distribution or it got re-pressed this year.

Aaron W to thread!

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I can never tell what albums qualify as "overlooked" or "deserves more attention", but I will say that the 5 Rue Christine label has released three stellar albums this year, and if you haven't heard all three, you're missing out: Deerhoof's Reveille, Hella's Hold Your Horse Is, and the self-titled Young People album, the last of which is probably the most overlooked of the three. Young People sound a bit like the Microphones in a spooky lo-fi kind of way, but sparser, with less tweaky production tricks, and female vocals.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

hrvatski's "swarm and dither" hasn't been ignored, but has not been acknowledged in a way commensurate with its greatness.

dan (dan), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

(Nick: Young People is one of the worst shows I've ever seen... Haven't heard Deerhoof yet (surprisingly), but Hella comes in at No. 3 on my Top Ten)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Japancakes' Belmondo lies somewhere betwixt the Boards and Sigur.

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Kevin Hearn's solo album. I have no clue when it came out but I was really impressed with his openning sets for The Rheostatics but figured I'd best save up for a cab when the show kept going past 3:30.

I also fear The Peter Parkers' Regular Urchin ep wasn't heard by enough shoegazing fans either, but I do what I can, Im just glad they finally got around to documenting their change in form since 97 or so.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone know if "Trigger Me Happy" by Quarks is out in the UK? DJ Martian? (coz the bits I've heard on their website sound quite good, but it's all in German so I can't work out when it's meant to be out)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Man, Yancey, first you dump on White Hassle live, and now Young People? Something tells me we won't be going to too many shows together, heh...

Seriously though, if you didn't like them live, you probably won't be too much into the album. Did you think they were too arty and disjointed or something?

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus... White Hassle... Forgot about that.

I saw the Young People show with Ira, and I remember saying something to the effect of, "Shit songs with arty song structures are still shit songs." He readily agreed.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, Jel not heard/ or even seen the name Quarks before.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Boa Morte - Soon it Will Come Time to Face the World Outside: gentle, sad Americana, quite Red House Painters-y. But beautiful in its own right.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Russian Futurists - Let's Get Ready To Crumble
Brooks - You, Me & Us
Elephant Man - Higher Level
Various - Garage Rap: Presented By CK Flash
Seana Carmody - Struts & Shocks
Ellis Island Sound - Ellis Island Sound
S Club Juniors - Together (!)

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second the Brooks record. Especially love the Prince/Paisley Park/early '80s R&B updates with Was (Not Was)-style nonsensical lyrics.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 5 December 2002 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Mirah: Advisory Committee (great songwriting coupled with stunning [arguably overwrought] production).

"Otomo Yoshihide New Jazz Ensemble - Dreams"

I've really wanted to hear this since it came out but do not have access to a copy. Any chance there are (or could be) some .mp3s posted of some of the better moments/tracks? A description/review would be much appreciated as well. Thanks! I'd also like to hear or hear more about the Knead record (PSF).

I'll second the Young People reccomendation; their live shows are not so great, but this doesn't change my opinion of their record. 5 Rue Christine has released an excess of meaningful challenging neo-post-punk bafoonery...enough to get me excited about "new" music for the first time in a few years.

As for 'probable' masterworks:

Volcano the Bear has put out a couple things worth picking up this year (unfortunately largely limited to miniscule botique pressings).

The Music Tapes finished their second album, which is (was?) available by writing them directly (it may come out on Merge in a year or two).

Ryan McKay, Friday, 6 December 2002 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no! Has this been done?

haha no! I just meant I started an identical thread last year, and was looking forward to repeating the exercise (but was waiting for a few more critics' polls to appear before starting it). I have some ideas for this year's "most overlooked". I'll reveive this thread if my suspicions are confirmed over the next few weeks.

Jeff W, Friday, 6 December 2002 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Iron & Wine - "The Creek Drank the Cradle" as well. Can't get enough of the hush vocals and acoustics.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 6 December 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

songs:
"Atmosphrique," Metro Area (brilliant house, so, like, '87, just one relentless hook)
"Nothin'," N.O.R.E. (maybe not totally overlooked, but I didn't hear anyone mention it this year...nice addition to hip-hop's growing commercial-exotica phase)

bootlegally speaking:
"Fateful Pavement," Dsico

s woods, Friday, 6 December 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The Rogers Sisters' Purely Evil squeaked in right toward the end of the year.

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 6 December 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"Atmosphrique"

Actually, that first came out in '99. (Sorry to be such a pedant, Scott... I really shouldn't get in the way of Metro Area praise.)

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 6 December 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Martian, you have a gap between Deerhoof and Delta Waves... but I've gone on about that one enough already.

Only one I have that appears to have utterly bypassed ILM is The Venue - half meh, five-sixths great, one-sixth fucking legendary. If you haven't heard Mmhm! yet, you want to.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 December 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

'99? My God I'm out of touch! Thanks for the info, Andy (and for sparing me embarrassment as it was going to be in my top 10 for sure). And here I am thinking I'm turning on ILM's dance massive to a house track which they're all probably long tired of.

s woods, Friday, 6 December 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

No ILMention, except me and maybe Martian's list:
Early Day Miners - Let Us Garlands Bring
Kelly Slusher - Rocks & Tears
Tarwater - Dwellers on the Threshold

And Pop Ambient 2003 is out now. More New Age than ever!

Curt (cgould), Friday, 6 December 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, that first came out in '99. (Sorry to be such a pedant, Scott... I really shouldn't get in the way of Metro Area praise.)

Before I forget: a hearty public thank you to Andy K for turning me onto this incredible album.

Scott, I'm hearing from Fusion that they're trying to get Morgan in to Toronto for a DJ set before the year is up!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 6 December 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, good, then I can rightfully put that on my list of "last chance" gigs for 2002!

Am I wrong in thinking the Metro Area album just came out a month ago? Is the rest of the material a) recent? b) as good as the three-year-old single?

s woods, Friday, 6 December 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, the Metro Area album came out in late October.

Six of its tracks originate from 12" singles that span '99-'01. Most of those were slightly edited to make the album flow better. The four other tracks (plus the intro) are completely new.

The only negative aspect of the album is that it doesn't include more of the old 12" material, like The Art of Hot -- my personal MA favorite.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 6 December 2002 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

The Walkmen.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 6 December 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

kurt broadies, esoj's band tugboat's album, split lip redfield's latest, counting crow's hard candy, and dylan's rolling thunder review (bootleg pt 5)

Queen G (Queeng), Saturday, 7 December 2002 08:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Best of 2002 = Grand Theft Auto Box Set.

Goodies, even if they're oldies. Plus:

The twenty CDs of YMO + related side projects I just got from Jeff in Michigan (remember him?). Jeff is the MAN.

Tom Millar (Millar), Saturday, 7 December 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The hilarious thing about the Dap Kings record is you can completely freak the shit out of an unsuspecting friend by putting it on the stereo (making sure said friend does not see the cover), telling them "yeah, it's some reissue of this great lost soul record from 1971", having them go for it, and then watching them look horrifically confused when they realize that the third track is a cover of "What Have You Done For Me Lately".

Cinematic Orchestra have been slept on, though not as heavily as most of the other bands on this thread.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 7 December 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Deerhoof Reveille is awesome. I saw the band live on Halloween (for the second time; the first was over the summer.) and they were awesome.

I saw Hella on the same night and was impressed with the playing, which was amazing, but I find that they're a good example of why complex songs doesn't mean entertaining songs. Though they dressed up as Pink & Brown for Halloween, and that was amusing.

ian johnson, Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Deerhoof Reveille is awesome

Yeah, let me second that. I think I need to put that on a best-of list somewhere...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 December 2002 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"Otomo Yoshihide New Jazz Ensemble - Dreams:
"A description/review would be much appreciated as well. Thanks!"

Ok, I'm listening right now. First off it has good singing by hoarse and strained female vocals. The chords are more pop than jazz. The sax melodies are good, the trumpet tone is bad and out of tune. Many of the songs are calm and relaxing except the last two that go total crazy. Some songs are relaxing in spite of the trumpet & sax playing random flurishes, and high pitch noises. All the electronic noises are in the background. All the songs have very different personalities.

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 8 December 2002 05:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Aimee Mann - Lost in Space
Jets to Brazil - Perfecting Loneliness

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 8 December 2002 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, add Interpol to my list. I really dig this record.

Tom Millar (Millar), Sunday, 8 December 2002 06:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Lake Trout - "Another One Lost"

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 8 December 2002 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

And Flaming Lips. Duh.

Tom Millar (Millar), Sunday, 8 December 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Two very good albums from this year that haven't been much noticed are Rovo's Tonic 2001 (a double-CD of a blistering live performance from last year, very well-recorded, longish post-krautrock jams) and Yohimbe Brother's Front End Lifter (which contains some of the most creative pairing of guitar and turntable that I've heard, managing to evoke a host of styles, from IDM to hip hop to hard rock to other undefined hybrids, while blending in African singing, country square-dancing calls, and more).
