Pop wisdom: Questionable advice in a (pop) song?

not just clear silliness or nonsense, but something that sounds kind of right or reasonable, but then when you think about it you go "hey, wait a minute..."

fer instance, "Love The One You're With" always sounded like such a nice song to me then I paid attention to that "if you can't be with the one you want" part before the titular lyric and realized that they're advocating SETTLING. how depressing.

Dub Narcotic Sound System - Fuck Shit Up

no, "Fuck Shit Up" are clearly words to live by.

'Just Be Thankful For What You've Got'

i know what they mean but if i was JUST thankful for what i've got i wouldn't have the drive to get anything else would i?

'Dont Fear The Reaper'

but he's got a scythe!

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 7 December 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"wise men say 'only fools rush in'"
vs.
"'he who hesitates is lost', that's what all the wise men say"

jones (actual), Saturday, 7 December 2002 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, Al...Steve Stills is actually advocating philandering and the song is cool! Do you see?

dave q, Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh right, 'cause cheating on people is the coolest.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

OK how about 'lick it, stick it, hit it & quit it' then

dave q, Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Still sounds questionable - you could come away with a disease what with such reckless licking and sticking.

Boyd Rice - "people" has some awfully questionable advice:
"something should be done to these [ugly, stupid, lying] people to make them suffer"

I always thought that 'Love The One You're With' meant that if you are somewhere down that dusky rock'n'roll highway and your woman is a hundred miles away then just grab any old bit of skirt and make do with that, 'cos ol' rockers jus' gotta keep on rollin'.
Or some fucking shit like that.

There's that great passage in the novelization of Last Days of Disco, wherein a coked out Bernie decries the bad advice in Jimmy Soul's "If You Wanna Be Happy"

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 7 December 2002 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember that song about how if you want to be happy for the rest of your life, you never make a pretty woman your wife? That's fantastic advice.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 7 December 2002 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

'When you've reached your peak, it's time to die' - Alec Empire

'In the Navy' - The Village People

'Boogie In Your Butt' by Eddie Murphy has a lot of dangerous suggestions in it.

also, the line in 'Whip It' that goes 'try to detach it!' - that's just never a good idea.

"Remember that song about how if you want to be happy for the rest of your life, you never make a pretty woman your wife? That's fantastic advice. "

That's Jimmy Soul's "If You Wanna Be Happy". In the book, Bernie actually goes on for a while about why it's bad advice.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 8 December 2002 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

"Crash into me."

wait, that's Dave Matthews.. never mind

Curtis Stephens, Sunday, 8 December 2002 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Well obviously it's horrible advice, but not as horrible as that Devo line! I never thought of that.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 8 December 2002 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Madonna:
"Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another"

It's too open to misinterpretation by dickwads.

toraneko (toraneko), Sunday, 8 December 2002 07:51 (twenty-three years ago)

worst piece of advice i ever received in a popsong:

"Tell him that you're always gonna love him, tell him that you're never gonna leave him, tell him, tell him, tell him, tell him right now."

Way to make a man go RUNNING for the door.. The Supremes and the Ronettes had much better advice.

kate, Sunday, 8 December 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

'touch my bum this is life'

cheeky girls.

doom-e, Sunday, 8 December 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

obviously shaggy "it wasn't me" --- worst advice ever.

dub narcotic sound system: fuck shit up, fuck shit up, make it punk, hit the sauce, shoot your boss, waste a pig, dianna rigg with make it fucked up in the background! best lyrics ever

ddd, Sunday, 8 December 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

If you want to know/if he loves you so/it's in his kiss.

Bollocks.

Zora (Zora), Sunday, 8 December 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)
