How about Headz or No New York?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 8 December 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

(Carefully sidesteps the i-word.) In NZ, AK-79 was a comp of the Auckland p*nk scene in that year. It was the catalyst for the explosion of alternative musics in NZ, which led to the (quite different) Dunedin sound and all the classic Kiwi bands that 2 or 3 people know and love. The equivalent album for Aotearoa hip-hop was Proud, which was much better and which you should pick out of a bargain bin the next time you're in NZ.

As in "the Harry Smith box only sold 600 copies, but of those 600 people, every last one of them went out and became Bob Dylan or somebody who hung out with him"?

Sure the Ocean of Sound compilation only sold X copies, but of those X people, every last one of them went out and had their hearing rewired; then they all attempted to make mixtapes/CDs that honored that comp's aesthetic.

Sure the NOW! That's What I Call Music 9 only sold X copies, but of those X people, every last one of them went out and danced like motherfuckers to the Pink remix with Redman.

It seems that Eno quote grows less and less true about the VU with every passing year. Need I repost the pictures of them at my mother's HS assembly again for proof of their relative popularity at the time?

Cunga, Friday, 13 July 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

Sure only X people bought 311's third and fourth studio albums, but every last one of those X people went home, smoked a bowl and fell asleep watching Dane Cook specials on HBO
