SHOCKING: I like the new Whitney single

People who've known me for a long time know exactly how shocking this admission is.

Honestly, though; she's doing her own thing in a range suitable for showing of the strengths of her voice (nimble, strong mid-range, character). She's released a song that's essentially a throwback to the Babyface-era of R&B and I can't find a place where it doesn't work, musically, vocally, lyrically or style-wise. Whoever's working with her should take Mariah Carey aside and reteach her how to sing, I think.

I was about to say, are you ill? Check your temperature.

Haven't heard the song, but maybe she's figuring the oldies market is the way to go...

Ashanti should teach Mariah how to sing again.

Ashanti should be beheaded by a gaggle of sabre-wielding brigands.

Yet another excellent video concept! I will be crushed if that's not the idea she used for "Baby".

When I first heard "Baby" I thought it was a MaryJane Girls song, so clearly I like it, regardless of my feelings toward Ashanti.

When I first heard "Baby," I thought a family of baby seals were being clubbed outside my window....then I realized some trunk o' funk was driving down 12th street, blasting Ashanti's inescapable bleating. Imagine my disapointment.

Ashanti does this weird thing with her mouth, like she dropped out in the middle of hip-hop finishing school's class on Seductive Facial Expressions for Music Videos.

Whitney can be very good when producers rein her in. I feel much the same about Aretha, although the results aren't quite comparable.

Wait, Whitney has a new one out after "Watchoolookingat"? Cos surely Dan's not referring to *that* one...

The video is for "One of Those Days". I haven't heard "Watchoolookingat?" yet.
