jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Woohoo! Looks like everyone else found out about it before me, because I was off at an event when the new issue was posted. One favour: can someone in NYC actually snag me a couple of hard copies to send my way? I'll pay for shipping, either in $$ or with a CD or something.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Very nicely done, sir! Why, you almost make me think kindly of Godspeed. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

only if it's a $9 CD.

Seriously, though, nice article.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean you RULE!

Well done!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

While I read that article, I thought back to some footage I saw of Petty a couple decades ago smashing a drum machine. He deserved what you gave him.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

kickass! The ILM takeover continues...

though we should remember that after the apocalypse Tom Petty will actually turn to politics, if "The Postman" is to be believed.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Sean, is it just hard copies of your article that you'd like? I'd be happy to do that. Just email me your address. The Voice can pay for postage so it is all legit.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom Petty will actually turn to politics, if "The Postman" is to be believed.

It would also be believed that Kevin Costner would wander around a desert landscape with an ass.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

congratulations, sean! that's great!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

cool ... nice one sean

phil jones (interstar), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

YES!!!!! GREAT! YAY!!!

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

kudos, sir, kudos
When I make my way to Toronto, I'll buy you a beer.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, all! I'm still not sure I believe it yet.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

When I get to Toronto, I will buy you TEN beers.

(and end up drinking five, well yeah)

Tom Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Holy smackers! This is supposed to be a nice step in my music journalism career, but with all of the beer that's now been promised it will actually probably mean my premature demise! (Though, as sundar, Kim and dyson can verify, I can actually sock away the beer pretty good these days. Yikes.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Look guys, I found meat!
beer beer beer bubba beer beer beer.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll buy you some corn nuts, Sean. Congrats!

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Very nicely done, Sean....but....

"[Petty's] blanket condemnation of the "stupidity" of hip-hop lyrics (and, by implication, all of the genre's fans)...,"

B-b-b-b-b-ut Hip Hop lyrics *ARE* stupid! Regardless of po-faced Petty's other crimes (most notably his dull-as-dishwater music), he's completley right on this point. If the shoe fits....kick someone with it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Give me any example of a dumb hip-hop lyric, Alex, and I'll give you a dumb one from rock. Give me any example of a smart rock lyric and I can give you another smart one from hip-hop. I'm not denying that there are dumb lyrics in hip-hop but blanket statements about anything are generally not particularly helpful.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds like a game after too many pints.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Fair point, Sean.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw this today - i'd also just grabbed a copy of last week's issue with jess' article in, and i was like "does ilx own this bitch or what"?

oh yeah, and nice article, congrats!

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 12 December 2002 06:50 (twenty-three years ago)

nice one, sean

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 12 December 2002 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats Sean!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Well done Sean, jesus all this ILX domination really makes a dude feel an urge to get something done.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Do it, Ronan! No matter where you think it might get published, it's worth the effort, just for the continued practise.

ps to Arthur: mmmmmmm, corn nuts! Those will go well with all of the beer.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Neat! Good to know that the feedback is generally supportive. Thanks for the link!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Sean, I slipped two copies into an envelope courtesy of the good people at the Voice; ssh! I hope you get it... I emailed you 2x but couldn't get through; anyway, I said a x-mas card would be ample repayment. but as I am loathe to post my home address here -- with all of my many admirers running about -- looks like you're off the hook! Hope they get to you ok...
