Caetano Veloso.

C'mon people! It's Momus.

He's one of the first to understand that the only really interesting things on the web are communities like ILX, and personal weblogs.

It's completely written by the only person we care about on the site; has the highest content / bullshit ratio of anywhere similar; is used to communicate news, pix, ideas about the creative process behind the music, work in progress etc. sometimes years in advance of their final fruition.

Not that it couldn't be improved eg. a more completist discography and lyric list would be useful : I had to go elsewhere to get the lyrics to Fatman, the War Photographer and The Hippy Portapak Analog Revolution.

And Nick would really benefit from a MomusWiki where we could mindmap the many cultural influences, interests and links in the world of Momus.

And hey, more free music, sound doodles, etc. are always welcome.

But other sites pale in comparison.

Caetano site is an example of everything that's wrong with website design :

Hard to find information, gratuitous video entry tunnel which having seen once I NEVER want to see again (but can I avoid it?), meaningless musical fragments totally out of context (what's the sample from, what does it mean?)

And it breaks the fucking back button! Eeuch!

phil jones (interstar), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

www.dilatedpeoples.com
www.warprecords.com
www.djshadow.com

there are too many cool flash sites to name..lets flip the script and ask what ist he worst artist/label site out there? my vote is the rephlex records site http://www.rephlex.com it is just piss poor

juiceboxxx, Tuesday, 10 December 2002 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Okayplayer.com holds it down nicely for the Roots, Common, Talib Kweli, the Jazzyfatnastees, Meshell NdengeOcello, D'Angelo, Jaguar Wright, and Scratch. Pretty good artist sites; more interestingly, it's evolved into a great and lively web community. And ?uestlove is the funniest dude on the messageboards.

Oh, and anyone who still loves the Boo Radleys needs to see Martin Carr's new project at www.bravecaptain.co.uk.

I have to remember how to link this shit all up.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

what the hell's the point of that Spiritualized site?

Does it convey any information about the band, that I might care about? Will I buy more records? Be keen to hear their new material?

It's bollocks! 100% useless.

Content wise, the Bob Dylan official site (duh, bobdylan.com) is astonishing. Sound clips of every song, complete lyrics, tons of live shows... really, really great.

the sonic youth site is pretty good. lots of good content (mp3s of b-sides, rarities), message boards, and it incorporates Chris Lawrence's concert chronology.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 12 December 2002 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Not an offical site, but for all those Bowie completeists this site has the info:

I hate flash sites, my favorite sites are simple and elegant and with lots of contribution from the artist.

Bill Rieflin's First World site was great when it had his diary on it.

The Youngblood Brass Band site is pretty unique, especially with the embedded music and whatnot.

Also Jo Jo Mayer's site has a lot of info, and the new Happy Apple site has a really cool look plus mp3s and funniness.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
Here's a simple site with an enormous amount of elegance and energy

A good record takes you on a journey. A journey where you can look inside your soul, and project those thoughts into your everyday life. A good record becomes something personal. Dear Sweet World utilizes minimilistic guitar playing, piano, harmonicas and bass to create an atmosphere, or medium, for the listener to connect with. That medium is the connection to your soul.

Biernia's bio definitely has an enormous amount of something.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

STRAIGHT FERN GULLY (jaxon), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I like any artist website that meets the following criteria:

1) It is not Flash (or anything stupid like that).
2) It does not attempt to play music or show me a video without my permission.
3) It does not have an intro.
4) It is not a MySpace page.
5) It has clearly labeled links to information.
6) It has updated high-res images available for download.
7) It lists specific contacts that make it easy to email and call the right person for business purposes (i.e. publicist, booking, label, etc.)
