If so, how was the bonus fifth CD packaged? I bought it as a present and have wrapped and sent it without checking if, as the sticker claimed, the bonus CD was inside. Anyone know?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

What's supposed to be on the bonus CD? And where did you get it?

Amazon's only got the 4 Cd version, but I haven't checked the shops yet.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 10:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The 5th CD contains :

Temptation 98

Transmission (Live At the Big Day Out, 2002)

Such A Good Thing

Theme From Best & Marsh

Let's Go (From 'Salvation' soundtrack)

True Faith (Pink Noise Morel edit)

Run Wild (Steve Osborne original mix)

The Perfect Kiss (Live take from a video shoot)

Elegia (Full version)

Apparently this CD is now supposed to be included with all of the initial run of Retro. I got mine in Virgin.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

it will be in there, i don't think you can buy a version without it yet. what annoys, is that the official new order box was, for years now, meant to be a la the joy division one - ie a fabulously beautiful, complete-back-catalogue-with-unreleased-demos-alt. versions-etc. job. it's been mooted for the best part of the last
ten years since republic.
most annoying that it's not, and that there's not ONE non-single track, across 5 cds (!!) from technique, the best pop album of that decade. to pour salt into the wound, they've put
'best and marsh' the twiddly throwaway 'round and round' b.side
on there instead. it'd be funny if it weren't so tragic.
i haven't been so annoyed by a retrospective since i saw the
abba cd re-issues.

god i love new order.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll buy it for the book and THE FUCKING COVER! I mean, for chrissakes, Peter Saville (I'm assuming) using an eagle attacking a disco ball is pure genius (no high-modern pseudo-fascist engagement with bass/e-culture there!). Yay!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i think the track listing is truly appalling.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought the track listing was fantastic, but who is going to buy the box set that won't already have all of it? the key to any box set is either ALL of the material or tons of unreleased material... they already had two or three "best of" CDs, so what's the point?

artwork is beautiful though... wouldn't mind a poster.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

but who is going to buy the box set that won't already have all of it?

my point exactly. if it's just going to be all from existing albums, what's the damn point? Live stuff and remixes are no attraction. A CD of out-takes and rare compilation stuff would have been very very appealing..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 12 December 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a question for you JD/NO rarities folks. Some vinyl versions (and the double cassette) of Joy Division - 'Still' have a live version of "24 Hours". Does anyone know if this version also appears anywhere on CD?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 December 2002 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

the dead can dance box set was dissapointing for the same reason, although it did come with the groovy DVD of towards the within.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

now a general question: When will they release a DVD (NTSC too!) of all their f'ing videos!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 December 2002 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i think new order's videos are best left forgotten

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 12 December 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki, you have a standing invitation to swing by the pad and check out the utterly fantastic videos that New Order have made, especially Bizarre Love Triangle.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 December 2002 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

What Spencer said.

"You're a real...UP...person!"

Also, enjoy ze Rob Gretton cameo at the end of "Touched by the Hand of God" (that's him taking a bow).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 December 2002 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

now what would be cool was if they re-recorded "movement" with john leckie for the box set.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

New Order party at my house!!! (of course after your move Ned - FAP prelude? I expect you to start/revive thread when yer settled).

you know that BLT was directed by formerly noted artist Robert Longo (who has since unfortunately - to some - directed Johnny Mnemonic).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 December 2002 08:17 (twenty-three years ago)

you mean backwards?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 December 2002 08:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I've succumbed to "will the extra CD still be available after Xmas?" paranoia and bought it.

HMV have got it for £27.99 btw. And they were playing 'Crystal' as I walked in the door which sealed it for me.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

of course after your move Ned - FAP prelude? I expect you to start/revive thread when yer settled

Sounds like a plan...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr C, in answer to your original question, the extra CD is in a little cardboard sleeve which is tucked into the place where the booklet is kept.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed on the UTTER NECESSITY of a complete-New-Order-videos DVD. They had some incredible directors: "The Perfect Kiss" is Jonathan Demme, "BLT" as mentioned is Robt. Longo (hence the yuppies-falling imagery), "Blue Monday 88" is codirected by William Wegman (and includes the dogs!). And "True Faith" has the best costumes ever.

Douglas, Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"Confusion" is also a big favorite, Arthur Baker, Jellybean Benitez, all at The Paradise Garage!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha - thanks PJM! My mind is at rest - doubly so since now I strongly believe that someone has also bought it for me.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 13 December 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

And the sleeve's got the eagle pic on it too. I opened mine last night and I've got to say it's packaged very well (as you'd expect). The booklet's lovely, and I like the way it's got its own bit of the sleeve to slot in rather than just hanging loose.

(The music's alright too.)

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

If you've a FOPP near you then they have it for £25.

I own no new order but would have bought this if it had been a decent career overview but looking at the tracklisting I don't think I'll bother given half the box is live and remixes.

mms (mms), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

so, for those of us who (gulp) have next to nothing by new order, is this the place to start?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say not. I'd go for Substance, Low life and Technique though others will go for different ones. Hopefully this means that the NO back catalogue is going to be rejigged with the usual sleevenotes, bonus tracks, dancing bears etc

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd buy New Order albums in the following order:

Substance
Movement
Get Ready
Technique

Get someone to copy a version of _Low-Life_ with "Age Of Consent", "Leave Me Alone" and "Blue Monday" from _Power, Corruption and Lies_ replacing "The Perfect Kiss", "Subculture", or "Face Up". Look for the original versions of "Temptation" and "Confusion" and then ignore everything that I haven't mentioned which isn't a single or a b-side.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Just been thinking about the much-criticised track listing and I have to say I like the way they've done it. Rather than just whack a load of hits and rarities chronologically over 4 discs as most people seem to do, they've actually thought about (or the different guest compilers have thought about) the different ways that people consume New Order.

Distilling the more beautiful pop tracks onto the first disc for instance really helps you appreciate them all the more. I've heard everything on it before, but liked the way they got a couple of less appreciated tracks from 'Get Ready' on there, and they fit.

Haven't listened to the rest of it yet, but having a 'club' and a 'live' disc surely make logical sense (2 different contexts in which New Order are great), and I'm looking forward to hearing the 2nd disc over the weekend.

There are a few things on the set that I haven't got, and I'm sure there's the odd rarity they could put on there if the idea was completism, but I don't think it is.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

**Hopefully this means that the NO back catalogue is going to be rejigged with the usual sleevenotes, bonus tracks, dancing bears etc**

No, I don't think so. My Factory insiders say new album next yr, but back catalogue stays as is.

I like the look of the track listing - carping about it isn't allowed anyway, it's New Order.

Toby - yes, it's a wonderful place to start.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
of course after your move Ned - FAP prelude? I expect you to start/revive thread when yer settled

Well, er, that slipped by the boards, didn't it?

Revive because I finally got the set, because I love it to extremes I didn't think I would have, because it makes clear again just how simply, perfectly and unimpeachably good NO is and will always be for me compared to so much else -- I felt ten times more excited to listen to a disc mostly composed of singles I knew backwards and forwards than practically anything and everything released this year (and last) -- and because, yeah, a DVD comp would be very nice, wouldn't it?

And if anyone has a spare copy of that fifth disc lying around somewhere...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 June 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew I should have nicked it from Suzy when I had the chance...

kate (kate), Friday, 13 June 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, I'll be happy to make a copy of the fifth disc for you.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank ya sir. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)
