S & D: Planet Mu

After finally getting Swarm & Dither, I'm very vaguely interested on some of the other stuff from the label. I was looking into Venetian Snares, but it doesn't do a whole lot for me. Where should I start? Or rather, is it even worth my time?

venetian snares=rubbish

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm sure theres some good stuff on mu but everything ive heard has been kind of blah...

...but i did like Elton Fastbacks Switch Hardflip, which is on one of their comps

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 12 December 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked the last Hellfish & Producer record.

ooh, that reminds me actually...light of india via slag boom van loom is very good, although the rest of that lp doesnt really match it

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Capitol K, mutherfuckers.

And Mr Paradinas himself, of course.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like Swarm and Dither, and I do like the Venetian Snares album too; though I confess to not listening to it much. Maybe it won't be heavy rotator.

"Tango'n'Vectif" is up there in my top 10 techno albums evah, but what's Mike done since. I enjoyed one track from the Royal Observatories thing, but what since then?

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

the 2 mu allstars 12"s are essential

Phthalocyanine, and I look forward to the Lexaunculpt release.

...?

i didn't like the second one but i bought it anyway for ebay

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 12 December 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah tango n vectif and in pine effect are both quality, although i dunno if either were actually released by planet mu...anything i've heard by hellfish and producer has been good, presuming you like gabber....

robin (robin), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I like everything Mike P has ever done. It's not so much his musical/programming acumen as his taste for dopey sounds that you never otherwise hear in electronic music. I even like 'Expert Knob Twiddlers' a lot. Also, both Jega records, even if he doesn't credit his sources.

Tom Millar (Millar), Friday, 13 December 2002 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i like v.snares they tickle me so. no po-faced mannerism / self - management of output / ouevre or ultra chic minimalism - just childish glee on a retro drillnbass circa 97 tip. sometimes i need that the most

bob snoom, Friday, 13 December 2002 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

planet-mu seems to be releasing tons of great neo-gabba at the moment Hellfish, VSnares, DJ Producer - I prefer this stuff to the often pointless drill n bass bollocks that mike seems to be partial.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 14 December 2002 04:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i cant get enough of that venetian snares style shit, although i really woulndt call it neo-gabba, probably closer to the "drill n bass bollocks"

doormouse-broken was also a really solid album, i havent heard the hellfish&producer. a lot of people do the breakcore sound, but venetian snares takes it to the next level i think, just as far as his beatz goes, it doesnt get much more solid or fucked. heavy metal d00d.

juiceboxxx, Saturday, 14 December 2002 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

heheh - I wouldn't call "Making Orange Things" drill'n'bass anyway. "Songs about my Cats" was repulsive though. I have the Hellfish album "MEat MAchine Beat Monkey" or somehting like that. It's good but it needs "Turntable Savage" on it to make it complete.

That Planet-Mu double album compilation "Songs in the key of ยต" was worth getting though. A few duds on there but mostly good shit and a wicked bootmix by Bit Meddler on it.

The Weaver001 7" is really nice

ok, what about the last 1-2 years of mu?

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

what about this new 2 cd comp 'children of mu'?

David-Graham Steans, Sunday, 20 June 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shitmat LP was pretty good, in a gimmicky bootleg ragga-jungle style. Wasn't that Remarc thing out on Mu? Mike P wrote an excitable piece on grime over on www.absorb.org pretty recently (it's in the articles section) so why he's not putting a bit of that stuff out is beyond me... I hope he hasn't asked some of his mates to do 'ironic' knock-offs.

Jason J, Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i really enjoyed the dDamage album. it's quite a bit like m83 but guitar driven and with splintered hip-hop type breaks underneath. sort of like if m83 did all of their songs in the vein of "0078h".

i just picked up the new kid spatula collection yesterday. it's basically unreleased stuff from paradinas' vaults. it's not bad, two hours of music for $8.99 ... most of it is very mellow, distracted keyboard explorations. most of the beats are tinny and glitchy and muffled. like he went as far as doing the keyboard production and just never got around to fleshing out the beats. which is a good thing. so it's basically an ambient album, not so far off from astrobotnia or the calmer ovuca tracks or even the calmest aphex twin, or a more electro boards of canada or less crunchy skam or ...

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

anybody know if the "stolen demo" of jega's unreleased "variance" album on slsk is legit or not?? (i guess people would only know if it was definitely not legit)

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
So Planet Mu seems to be on a bit of a roll lately. The Bizzy B EPs, re-releasing the 0=0 stuff, even some northern grime act Virus Syndicate (which Reynolds apparently rates), a Hellfish solo album, and that Mark One album which I never actually heard.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The Virus Syndicate album is fucking great, as is the new Bizzy B stuff. This label is possibly the best it's ever been right now

DJ Mencap0))), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, the new Snares record is his first one in an age I'm actually enjoying. Lots of minimally-played live violin - even if you hate Snares, this might be one to convert you

Jason J, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The Chevron album is lovely, too. Dunno anything about the new Gasman except that it has the previously-released "Imodium" on it, but if the other tracks are anywhere near as good I'll be very happy.

Like the variety of stuff on the Solar Bears EP, but not mad keen on the album (which isn't on P-Mu anyway I don't think)

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

The Solar Bears album is on Planet Mu and it's way better than the EP in my opinion. The album is plenty varied but doesn't have the heavy guitar stuff which spoils the EP for me. And Oriol's "Joy FM" is flippin' fantastic.

Number None, Friday, 8 October 2010 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't heard much on Planet Mu but I will say that the first two Boxcutter albums are fantastic.

yeah ilxor stop throwing dog shit on a MAGICAL moment. (ilxor), Friday, 8 October 2010 01:53 (fifteen years ago)

Aw, that switch up to the guitars on the second song was my favourite thing :(

My favourite Planet Mu thing I think
