Bands/artists you'd swear were Cdn but actually aren't.

1. Creed: there's just something soooo Guelph about these fartknockers
2. Steve Albini: he always talks about Canada
3. Ronnie Hawkins: nope, not Canadian

Horace Mann, Thursday, 12 December 2002 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

But is Ronnie Hawkins' music Canadian?

Steve Albini: he always talks about Canada

He's from Montana, which is close enough.

hstencil, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

me.

kate, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

you can't be all pur laine about it. ronnie hawkins is american-born but spent almost his whole career as a canadian.

albini hates canadians or pretends to anyway. no loss.

live are too christian and not humble enough

wannabe cancon:
- wilco before they went new wave, when they still sounded like a sheryl crow cover band who couldn't find a woman to sing for them
- phantom planet are bigtime sloan/thrush hermit biters for real
- & ok go are thrush hermit

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, it must have been so daunting for Albini to grow up in the shadow in Saskatchewan.

Horace Mann, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

shooting star (who really should have come from the same place as saga, streetheart, and prism, who I THINK were all canadian.)

chuck, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Off topic but it must have been so daunting for Albini to grow up in the shadow in Saskatchewan. made me laugh and spurt strawberry milkshake all over my keyboard.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to disagree about Creed, they couldn't possibly sound more redneck Floridian, unless of course they got Fred Durst to guest on a track.

They Might Be Giants sure sound Canadian, though.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Well that, and he went to school at Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois.

Wisdom once imparted to me by Dan Koretzky:

"Evanston is the Canada of Chicago. Indiana is the Canada of America. And Australia is the Canada of the World."

hstencil, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Great White

s woods, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Creed would sound more Florida if their singer was a chainsaw-weilding maniac.

hstencil, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

How is Indiana the Canada of America??

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

It just is.

hstencil, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Canada = perennial bridesmaid, never bride?

Horace Mann, Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

montana is the canada of america, me friend.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, Koretzky said it, not me!

hstencil, Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah montreal and halifax and victoria and trois rivieres are so montana-ish it's not even funny

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Nebraska? Utah? Colorado? Vermont? Alaska?
Face it, everybody's always moaning about Canada being the 51st state, but I think the USA is the 11th province, or 4th territory.
Hell, even the "Axis of Evil" was a Cdn invention, or so says David Frum's wife.

Also, Koretzky...Gretzky? Is Drag City funded by Esso Points?

Horace Mann, Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

By the way, chuck is correct about Saga, Streetheart and Prism, at least two of those whom I'm very impressed that he (formidable knowledge notwithstanding) has even heard of. I thought they had some sort of filter at the border to prevent stuff like that from entering foreign territory. I know that Saga escaped this fate by moving to Germany. It actually surprises me how many of these Canadian bands I thought were obscure are actually known quantities in the US with certain listeners...I never would have guessed that anyone would know who Chilliwack were.

Incidentally, I would argue with Montana's status as the Canadian state. I'd say Minnesota, myself: it's cold, there's culture but it's all bundled up in a few packets, nobody really knows what the capital of it is, and there are politicians who are ex-wrestlers.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

>>I never would have guessed that anyone would know who Chilliwack were.<<

Because they been gone gone gone they been gone so long they been gone gone gone so long?

chuck, Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's probably the typical Canadian inferiority complex teamed up with the lingering thought in the back of the mind that maybe...just MAYBE Canadian Content regulations were, in fact, the only reason that we as Canadians are familiar with such music. Oddly, it was even earlier Chilliwack that an American friend of mine admitted to knowing, and I just stared blankly.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm now curious if you know anything about Harlequin or the Queen City Kids, chuck.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Montana is the Steve Forbert of states.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

when i was a teen i was convinced the violent femmes were canadians. i think it may've had something to do with the amount of lyrics about the u.s., if that makes sense to anyone. they're from wisconson aren't they?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

seriously though, is the only reason the WACKY Canuck rockers get recognition in the States is because it fulfills the comedic stereotype?

I think I answered my own question.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

That said, I'd love to think of Godspeed You Black Emperor! as some elongated Andy Kaufman skit that has transcended reality and his lifetime.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I never would have guessed that anyone would know who Chilliwack were.

I remember them -- that song Chuck quotes, at least, it was on the radio. They even played Solid Gold!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The Presidents of the United States of America

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Crack the Sky (who seem like they'd come from the same place as Max Webster and Goddo).

Anacrusis and Mekong Delta (who seem like they'd come from the same place as Voivod). (Which they MIGHT, come to think of it.) (Actually, I don't think I've ever even heard Mekong Delta, so never mind.)

Laura Branigan (who seems like she'd come from the same place as Jane Child, Alannah Myles, and Alanis Morissette).

The Jetsons, Panics, and Gizmos (who seem like they'd come from the same place as the Modernettes, Young Canadians, and Pointed Sticks.)

And I think I heard of Harlequin once, Sean, but I forget why. (Remember, though, I'm from DETROIT -- which is actually NORTH of Canada.) (Well, north of WINDSOR, anyway.)

chuck, Friday, 13 December 2002 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Chuck, I have a feeling you'd like "Innocence" by Harlequin.

Foreigner, Queensryche.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 13 December 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Crash Test Dummies. Oh hold on, they actually are Canadian aren't they?

Dirty Three tho, definitely, and TMBG secinded.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 13 December 2002 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Seconded, ay?

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 13 December 2002 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

canadians: they are so damn insecure.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Mekong Delta

Ultra technical, Mussorsky-obsessed thrashers with dodgy hair - how could they be anything but German?

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 13 December 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Our Lady Peace, Semisonic, Matchbox Twenty, Def Leppard, Madonna, India.Arie, Ryan Adams, Big Sugar, Lighthouse, Lifehouse, Lifeson, Jay-Z

Absalom, Friday, 13 December 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I counted at least 3 Canadians in Absalom's post, but I suspect that was the point.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Harlequin was from Winnipeg, and I think their "success" was mostly regional. They seem to be the one band that is familiar to people living out west (with anyone over 25, at least) thanks to tracks like "I Did it For Love", "You are the Light", "Sweet Things in Life","Innocence" and "Superstitious Feeling"...but virtually unknown out east or in the U.S. The weirdest thing is that when I hear them I immediately think of Bon Jovi...the keyboard-driven hard rock thing was something they'd been doing for years.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Michelle Branch

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

That's crazy that you remember Chilliwack from Solid Gold, Ned. The singer from Chilliwack (Bill Henderson) has re-invented himself as a folkie, doing the folk festival circuit. Harlequin still gigs around town here, Sean. Are you still sure you don't want to move here?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I only know Harlequin because they were on a K-Tel record comp I had as a kid. The first record I ever owned!

Kim (Kim), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't Chilliwack turn into Trooper?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't Trooper invent reggae?

s woods, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

wasn't that Bryan Adams, 'tis the season!

Horace Mann, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

So can we classify all the aforementioned bands as being....Secretly Canadian?

*ducks and runs*

JS Williams (js williams), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

* Mark Robinson. Had a band called Flin Flon (a city in Canada), released an album entitled Canada's Green Highways. Multiple songs about Canada and New Jersey.

* Neko Case. Thought she was from Vancouver, since she played for Cub and so forth. Found out she's not.

mike a (mike a), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Well she went to college in Vancouver. Her album was produced in Canada and most of the artists on her album are Canadian so she might qualify if you look at the credits. We should ask Mint.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 14 December 2002 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow.....Chiliwack! There's a name I haven't seen in a bajillion centuries. They were in the first thirty vids MTV used to play ad nauseum back in the days with the earth was still cooling and the skies were filled with the cries of descending pteradactyles.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 December 2002 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

God, the entire first Flin Flon record is all Canada, all the time. I don't know what Robinson's deal is, I think he might be a Canadian indie-rock espionage plot.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 14 December 2002 08:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean how could that guy not be Canadian?

I always felt like Rick Astley should have been Canadian, but he must have just looked that way in comparison with his voice.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 14 December 2002 08:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark Robinson certainly has that Canuck surreal sense of humor down pat, that's fer sure.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 14 December 2002 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
God, the entire first Flin Flon record is all Canada, all the time.

So is the second - all songs named after places in Newfoundland. (I went to high school in Virgin Arm.)

For the record, Neko Case is originally from Tacoma, Washington

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 5 February 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

But her best album is an ep of covers of Canadian songwriters

sym (shmuel), Thursday, 5 February 2004 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Cdn songwriters like Hank Williams?

Huckleberry Hey Now!, Thursday, 5 February 2004 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Um...mostly canadian. It had the word canadian in the title.

sym (shmuel), Thursday, 5 February 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Low. Nobody mentioned Low.

(They sound like the Cowboy Junkies if the Cowboy Junkies were requested to "slow it down quite a bit", they wrote a song called "Canada", and they're from Minnesota, too -- the Canada of America, right?)

(Anyway, I love Low, and I'm in Canada, so that proves it, really.)

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 5 February 2004 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shins sound like they're ripping off Zumpano half the time.
