What's an m3u File and How Do I Use It?

Ok, i know what the file is, a playlist (right?) but is there anyway i can copy them to cd? This is my predicament: i have two amazing mixes i 've dl from certain servers onto floppy on my college cpus. But when i get homemy media player (windows) won't play it. Do I just need to get a RealOne player (on which the mixes were copied) or am i just fucked in general? Help please!
Chizeers.

try changing the file extension from .m3u to .mp3? its possible the extension was switched to avoid detection by the server providers

No, no, no - .m3u is just an MP3 playlist. I can't see why it can't be burned onto a CD-R.

If the mixes are in RealOne format, I don't think any player besides RealPlayer can play them. What's the file extension on the mix - something like .ra? If so, then RealPlayer is the only player for you.

windows media and winamp should be able to read the .m3u file itself - and as a file it should be recordable onto CD of course. how does the m3u file retrieve the files in its playlist? are the locations of the files in the tracklist remote (e.g. online) or on your hard drive? if so, make sure the playlist's location in relation to the files it requires matches on your hard drive and on your CD (e.g. in both cases, all files required are in the same folder)

Thanks. So am i right to believe that m3u's don't actually contain music? Because i'm listening to it now directly from floppy independently of the site. I'll try dl a realplayer, I can do this for free right?
Cheers for tolerating my ignorance!

An m3u file is just a list of locations of music files, either local or on the net. If those locations are accessible, the player will play them, if not, it won't play anything. Simple as that.
