What's Young, Fresh, & New Nowadays?

I just scooted over to the local Circuit City during my lunch break, and damn if I couldn't find a darn thing that piqued my interest - same thing happened to me yesterday @ Borders. Of course, I have no idea what's coming out when & whatever, and while I COULD just window shop @ Insound or Aquarius until my RAM goes the way of the magnified ant, I'm deathly curious as to what the ILM Unimind has been listening to as of late. If it's of recent vintage, all the better, but remember - if I haven't heard it, it's new to me! (And, of course, I'm thinking of other folks as well when posting this question.)

Please note that there will be no partial credit given for posts simply comprised of lists - all answers must include a brief description (at least 5 words) describing the value of said music, or your opinions therein. Diversity in answers is not required, but encouraged.

Slimzee, Dizzee Rascal and Rolldeep Cru: wrestling UKG from the grubby Cristal staind mitts of So Solid et al, these and a slew of underground pirate operating dudes from all over London are making music ostensibly designed to dance to but more suited to mugging old ladies in Holloway. Abrasive, aggresive, alkaline and lots of other adjectives starting with 'A' (most importantly, ACE) the beats are more akin to neptunes productions like 'Grindin'; really minimal with blooping bass hiccups and industrial synthetic bells. Dizzee Rascal is 19 and arguably one of the finest mc's in london right now (rolldeep also have a 14 year old mc) his seminal release to date is 'I Love You' which you may've heard already... basically, sit by your radio tonight and flick through the original pirate material until you find the rolldeep show, it will blow your head off.

Maelstrom, Dave "MF" Popshots lives in the US so he cannot partake of your piratey yoof stew! AARRRRRRR that's too bad.

Dave look for anything with Univers font on the cover. It's bound to be young and fresh.

Reeet then, well just get a battered 303 and a mic and make your own. Dave, you are aware of the existence of hip hop right?

My personal tri-mind is still listening to electro. Sorry. That and France Gall, who was young, fresh, and new several decades ago. And this Russian Futurists fellow David Howie's been on about, though I don't think that's so generally fresh and new. I got nothing.

Here are the names of the folders I have cycling through winamp this week: akufen, black heart procession, deerhoof, ethiopian groove, felix mix, guitar, jeans team, justin timberlake, latyrx, le car, ms john soda, schneider tm, sugababes. I don't suppose any of that counts?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 12 December 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

nabisco : what's "ethiopian groove"?

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 12 December 2002 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

not sure if he's talking about it, but the Ethiopique series (there's maybe 11 now?) are amazing. They're Ethiopian music from the 60s and 70s that sound like a mix between middle eastern melodies and James Brown rhythms. very funky. very ethnic. recorded really poorly, so really dirty (that's a good thing in my eyes)

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 12 December 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, same sort of stuff as the Ethiopiques. Maybe a little more recent. Ayalew Mesfin's "Good aderegechegn" = ace.

Young, Fresh, & New Google Search!

the ILM Unimind

I like that, because it makes me think that everybody on ILM is really just part of a Master Computer ala a Tron.

Sean Paul's Dutty Rock -- for all the reasons the Oumano mentions here: http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0250/oumano.php

and many many more. The best tracks hit damn hard and the rest are deep lover's rock.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

David, I was going more for a veiny yellow Jack Kirby brain vibe, but if that works for you, hit it.

And, for the love of all things fuzzy, this isn't about what I like or don't like, or what I'm aware of, which isn't much. Just tell me what's Young, Fresh, and New! EVERYTHING is fair game.

And Univers is sooooo bland & stodgy. Name me a YF&N record w/ Univers on it, Tracer!

the xmas tree i dragged home last night

kephm, Friday, 13 December 2002 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

farben's "textstar" - it makes me feel warm, fuzzy, and taken care of.

dan (dan), Friday, 13 December 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave, if you just stay caught up with gabba/AMP you'll be about as with it as anyone. It's a good cheater for people who don't have the time to obsessively read a bunch of stuff anymore.
Hey, is just making selected tracks available like the culmination of the Blender "don't criticize stuff just point the way to the cool things" modus?

Dan I., Friday, 13 December 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I being a nonmember of the ILX unithought, have been really into French Pop (mostly off of the Binjour La France compilations) lately. It sounds like David Bowie or Scott Walker from before they were David Bowie & Scott Walker, and it lets me practice French. Ace all around, but by no means fresh.
