Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I think my brain just exploded.

Todd Burns, Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Now she just needs to cover S.O.D. and NOBODY can call her not-punk ever again!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Punk is dead - Viva Avril!

wtf?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

SO NICE!

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I love that she finds the humor in the song's staccato rhythms in the verses, but really goes for the sweetness of the chorus. It's a good indication, I think, of how a lot of people listen to the song: Withstanding the abruptness solely to hear that super-smooth progression. Best of all: The phony scary voice that ends it, poking fun at Serj's ultra-serious nature (which I think, in fact, is really a joke (I mean, look at the equally great and manic "Sugar")).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

ROFLMGDMFAO...does she even know the words?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.crnw46307.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/mp3/Avril_Lavigne-Chop_Suey_(System_Of_A_Down_Cover).mp3

does this work?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

*swoon*

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

because of stupid Real One Player i had to paste that link into a new html document, fix it and re-open in my browser, THEN right-click and 'save target as...' - better be worth it !

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Try this:

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"I am Avrolio. Are you threatening me??"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

So, was this some Karaoke show on Muchmusic or MTV, then?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Avrolio

Ha ha - I thought of Beavis when I heard this too.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

that was somewhere between agonisingly bad and hilariously great

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Holy crap.

Aaron W, Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm left speechless.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

God i wanna fuck this bitch.

gggggggggggggg!, Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually looking forward to this because I don't think I ever heard the original. At least not knowingly. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

you can hear somebody go "whaaat?!" around 12 seconds in, at least i think that's what it was.

Honda (Honda), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

somebody should have pulled out a gun and blown her away. i would have loved it if it was Serj.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Serj would "unleash the fucking fury!"

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

If Avril were really punk she'd cover the Ramones' "Chop Suey."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Serj/Avril duet!!!! They should do "You're The One That I Want" from Grease.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

This is grate. (Conventional meaning, not ILX meaning.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, I must say, yeah, I still want Avril to die in a horrific death involving trains and dolphins, but, that was actually pretty witty. Especially the slurring the lyrics that noone can understand anyway.

Then, you know somebody in her band came up with this anyway; because judging by her interview in Rolling Stone, there's no WAY she could've thought of it.

David Allen, Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

There's no way she could've thought of covering a song?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

It doesn't work because the "pretty" singing is HORRENDOUSLY OUT OF TUNE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, I must say, yeah, I still want Avril to die in a horrific death involving trains and dolphins

For all intense porpoises, that's really fucking sick.

It doesn't work because the "pretty" singing is HORRENDOUSLY OUT OF TUNE.

HONOUR THE TIMBRE!

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

But HORRENDOUSLY OUT OF TUNE = PUNK

(I could care less about Avril either way, but I do enjoy this cover, although not as much as the original)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yanc3y hits on why I dislike most punk!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Wouldn't it be great if dolphins ate Avril while she drowned, instead of saving her like they do most humans?

hstencil, Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Evil Dolphins....now *THAT's* punk...never mind that "singing out of tune" claptrap (which is patently untrue).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

(I am TOTALLY adopting "HONOR THE TIMBRE!", BTW.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't like it.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Avril on some awards show or something and she was definitely out of tune, it sounded bad. I'm surprised they didn't "auto-melodize" her.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that anything like auto-erotic axphyxiation?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

EEEEEEEEEEEEW.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

what dan said. am i the only one on this bitch who's actually seen avril live?

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

You may have seen her live, but we'll see her dead!

Eeeeerk! Eeeeeep! Eeeeeep!

Evil Punk Dolphins, Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

BA-HAhahahahahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Quiet, Killing-Joke-fan-human, or we'll take you out too.

Eeeeerk! Eeeeeep! Eeeeeep! Eeeeeep! Eeeeeep!

Evil Punk Dolphins, Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw her outside at the mtv awards preshow. i didn't see her do this, but i saw her play 'sk8er boi' and 'complicated'. it was pretty underwhelming.

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i see your punk dolphin and i raise you a psychedelic porpoise

http://www.theoriginalsoundtrack.com/ile/dolphinthumb.jpg

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

My wife saw Avril on the Billboard Awards. I believe the exact quote was, "Dan, she can't sing a SINGLE NOTE. She was HORRIBLE. How on Earth is she popular?"

The Evil Punk Dolphins now have me humming "Eep! Opp! Ork! Ah-ha!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Avril would do well with a sing/speak thing like Lou Reed.

jm (jtm), Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

speaking as a representative of the dolphins of the forest, i can say that evil punk dolphins are all talk, no action.

avril is not of our concern. although, if she does sing out of tune, perhaps we can use her as a backup squeaker.

m.

msp, Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Listening to it again, I want her backup singer to take over the band.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not a psychedelic porpoise, it's a gay-pride dolphin!

hstencil, Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"You have unleashed the fucking FURY!"
- Y.J. Malmsteen

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

<gatchmana>were-dolphins of the forest universe, unite!</gatchaman>

gygax!, Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Were-dolphins, we like don't wanna fight you. That would ruin the unity of the scene, man.

Come chill with us out in the sea sometime. We'll hit up ol' man manatee for change to get into the all-crustaceans show, then go vandalize a Taco Bell or something.

Evil Punk Dolphins, Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Avril would do well with a sing/speak thing like Lou Reed.

She could replace the girl from Life Without Buildings!!

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 13 December 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

She's not out-of-tune, she's singing the counter-melody

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 13 December 2002 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

she's got to better singing live than Pink - gad she is terrible

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

this really isnt good in an ironic way or for reals.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 13 December 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of perfectly good singers are accused of being lousy live performers because they haven't had proper soundchecks and they can't hear themselves in their monitors. This is especially true at awards shows.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 December 2002 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps Avril and P!nk are out of tune live because their Sound Engineers are evil fuX0ring men who see it as their seX0rist duty to sabotage chiX0r rock by rendering it out of tune - using the auto-melodizer in reverse.

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i just saw the latin vmas again today and she really couldnt sing, but it was nothing compared to the crapness of her band or the crapness of Michelle Branch singing

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, whatever. That stupid cunt needs to die and so do the rest of you for ever trying to recognize some sort of hipster stylishness in that particular take. Sheer awfulness abounds. I'm so disgusted I will now smoke a raspberry flavored cigarette just to get the taste of those 15 seconds out of my soul.

You ugly horrible bastards, each and every one.

Tom Millar (Millar), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

can't wait to hear this when i get back from GOA.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeez, and I thought I was the bitter ILM'er.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, well, that was before I joined.

Tom Millar (Millar), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, but do you honor the fire? That's the real test of thy bitter mettle.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:41 (twenty-three years ago)

does she do any grateful dead type solos in this track?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

and yes, does she honor the fire?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Wha? Avril confesses to not even knowing the Pistols. I'd wager she's not that familiar with all things Joke.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, the fire is just an opiate for old people who think KJ is still important. Come on.

Tom Millar (Millar), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Jaz Coleman (vassifer), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio are you feeling the trance?

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Friday, 13 December 2002 04:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, the fire is just an opiate for old people who think KJ is still important. Come on.
-- Tom Millar (tmillar@c...), December 13th, 2002.

Cant wait to see the response to this.

David Allen, Friday, 13 December 2002 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I see your dolphins reference and raise you all thirty times.

(throws ace)

Tom Millar (Millar), Friday, 13 December 2002 05:05 (twenty-three years ago)

What a lovely story!

toraneko (toraneko), Friday, 13 December 2002 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Gah...!

jm (jtm), Friday, 13 December 2002 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

HILARIOUS

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

''Julio are you feeling the trance?''

yes.
