Here's a CD-R I made on the subject a few years back. The Karl Hendricks tune is easily the most over-the-top breakup song ever.

Damien Jurado – “Letters & Drawings”
Bright Eyes – “The Calendar Hung Itself”
Karl Hendricks Trio – “The Last Thing You’ll Ever Do For Me”
Long River Train – “The First”
John Cale – “(I Keep A) Close Watch”
Chills – “Halo Fading”
Kirsty MacColl – “Last Day Of Summer”
East River Pipe – “Hey, Where’s Your Girl?”
Death Cab For Cutie – “Photobooth”
Reivers – “Keep Me Guessing”
Kowanko – “One Too Many Times”
Ween – “Birthday Boy”
White Stripes – “Death Letter”
Tanya Tucker – “The Jamestown Ferry”
Simon Joyner – “When She Drops Her Veil”
Scott Walker – “Angelica”
Bryan MacLean – “Strong Commitment”

You need a few glasses of wine and "Yes" by McAlmont & Butler

bham, Friday, 13 December 2002 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I've done this, oh yes.

Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes-"Miss You" CLASSIC song, totally OTT and nonsensical monologue
Stina Nordenstam-"I'll Be Crying For You
Jay Jay Johanson - "The Girl I Love Is Gone"
Come-"I Got The Blues"
Afghan Whigs-"My World Is Empty Without You"
Marvin Gaye-"Here My Dear" The whole fucking album.

Hefner - Hymn For The Alcohol

anything by Trembling Blue Stars

Wyndham Earl, Friday, 13 December 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
Wow...ok...here we go. First post. I have to agree with Wyndham on the Hefner/Trembling Blue Stars. Most of my picks are contextual. Depending on how the breakup occured, they may or may not be appropriate.
Ok, working with what I got in front of me...

The Secret Stars - Some Sinatra
(This song absolutely kills me and was my first musical experience with Geoff Farina. To this day, I still find it scary how applicable this song was to my breakup.)

Brendan Benson - What
(Great song if you're left for someone else. I'm a huge Benson fan. I love the way his music and lyrics contradict each other. He also manages to keep that air of arrogance that is important to maintain after a breakup. "With a not so pretty face / He's gonna take my place?")

The Reindeer Section - Your Sweet Voice
(Ok...if you want to have a serious conversation about songs that absolutely killed me, this is way up on the list. In fact, if you've got some spare cash, go out and buy their album "Son of Evil Reindeer." Put it on when you wake up or right before you go to sleep and just lay in bed.)

Solomon Burke - Don't Give Up On Me
(Want her back? Or just want to hear one of the most amazing Soul singer's of all time? Mojo magazine named his latest album, "Don't Give Up On Me," the best album of 2002. I'm highly inclined to agree with them on this one. There are a couple of other songs on the album that might be appropriate depending on your situation. My personal pick is "The Judgement," but "Don't Give Up On Me" is more universal.)

Songs: Ohia - Just Be Simple
(This was a tough one for me. When it comes to mixtapes, I am a staunch believer that thou shalt not but more than one track by any artist the same tape. With other artists, I can sometimes cheat. Putting a Mark Kozelek song in with a Red House Painters track. Songs: Ohia doesn't offer such a luxury [unless you count Amalgamated Sons of Rest]. Chosing just one Songs: Ohia track is kind of like choosing which child you love best. For a breakup mix I'd probably bookend the tape with this and probably Darling...)

Red Elvises - I'm Not That Kind Of Guy
(Threw this one in for fun. This is the attitude everyone should have after a breakup. "You told me that you loved me, but that was just a lie...but when you saw me kissing your sister in your bed, you called me a f*ing fool and took a taxi cab.")

AlienBoy (AlienBoy), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm . . . I'm trying to think what was on my break-up tape. Havn't needed it since I found Blood On The Tracks, though . . .

I remember Manchester Girl by Eels being on it . . . I think it was a really quiet piano based thing chating about isolation and hopelessness. Very cheery.

Ther Smiths tracks was "Never Had No-One Ever", I remember that much. That was a scary song. I loved that song. Have to skip it now.

"Wish You Were Here" was there as well. That was cool - in the middle os no-where there was this quiet thing. Marvellous.

God, I sound so adolescent.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Errrrrrrrrrrrr, why is The Lovin' Spoonful's "Wild About My Lovin'" on it? Other than the fact that it's a fantastic track?

The Band - "It Makes No Difference" or "Whispering Pines"

- gets ya every time.

Dadaismus, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Gang of Four, Damaged Goods
The Cure, Letter to Elise
The White Stripes, There's No Home For You Here
Interpol, Leif Erickson
Blur, To The End
Blondie, One Way Or Another
Morrissey, Speedway
La Britney (as I have taken to calling her), Cinderella

That's as far as I've gotten so far, and it's starting to piss me off so I'll think of more later.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Lying in bed till noon = wallowing?! I do this everyday (when I can.)

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The wallowing-in-misery-mix-CD-nickalicious-style (made a few months ago):

1. Cibo Matto - Moonchild
2. Mazzy Star - 5-String Serenade
3. Radiohead - Optimistic
4. Medeski Martin and Wood - No Ki Aki Ani (sp? fuck it)
5. Latyrx - Balcony Beach
6. The Beatles - Within You Without You
7. Rahsaan Roland Kirk - The Inflated Tear
8. Ween - She's My Baby
9. Tom Waits - Cold, Cold Ground

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

(I guess "Within You Without You" is the one that is kinda out-of-place, but considering the circumstances [which are none of your business], it's TOTALLY appropriate.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, I sleep til 5pm if I don't set my alarm to get up earlier, not kidding.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Verve, History
Spiritualized, Broken Heart
Magazine, You Never Knew Me
Buzzcocks (take pick)

(Or just listen to the Fall and Black Box Recorder and Big Black and take the angry'n'bitter route)

(Oh, and I got up at 5pm today. The wallowing and the sleeping in are entirely separate)

Ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

5pm! Cripes, I get up at 5am every damn day. Partly because my wife's snoring is like a friggin Husqevana Chainsaw.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
i'm reviving this because i realized that this song by the Poppy Family is the saddest thing ever, "That's Where I Went Wrong." Highly recommended to the sad and wallowing. You might start to cry on a bus.

crly, Monday, 21 March 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

As a teenager I listened to a lot of Darklands.
