Quintron & Miss Pussycat C/D?

A classic in my book, but.... worth a discussion dare I say.

maria b (maria b), Friday, 13 December 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic, especially as live performers (let's just say I don't listen to my Flossie & the Unicorns records very often--though I have more than one of them).

Is Miss Pussycat a trannie? I keep thinking so...

Douglas, Friday, 13 December 2002 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Destroy!

Actually I loved "I.F. 001-011", but when I saw him live with Miss Pussycat...ugh. Maybe I saw a bad show but he seemed to have devolved into a kind of kitsch novelty act with "cabaret" pretentions. Maybe he got contaminated by doing that album with the Oblivians, which by the way brought *that* group into the realm of kitsch novelty.

Am I wrong?

Paula G., Friday, 13 December 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

No. (I like him better when he was in Math, which is not only like the greatest band name EVER but really rocked the no-wave noise gambit excellently; Mr. Quintron's explosion has become too blues, by my lights)

Miss Pussycat is not a trannie.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 13 December 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw them live semi-recently and they were fantastic--one of the best recent shows to come 'round here.

slutsky, Friday, 13 December 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic live. They were on a bill with puppet shows and weird noise. Throughout the night there was fire, fake blood, fistfights, analog death and crazy dancing involved.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 13 December 2002 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Quintron is classic. Destroy Miss Pussycat.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 December 2002 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

A few years back, I listened to all the records in my collection for labeling popuses for DJ type stuff that I do. I labeled Quinton "somewhere out there there is someone drunk enough to understand this."

scottstreat (scottstreat), Saturday, 14 December 2002 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

erm, .... I wouldn't recommend getting drunk and listening to Quintron. Drunks understand U2 though, I think.

maria b (maria b), Sunday, 15 December 2002 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I was at the show with Ian.

Quintron may have been one of the most amazing live shows I have had the honor to see. Never have I seen so many pretentious indie fucks shake their THANGs without alcohol or a bad "retro" club environment

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Monday, 16 December 2002 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

simply by putting a dance beat behind "baby elephant walk" too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 December 2002 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer is otm re Math. Math was like three Quintrons all rocking at once -- and Q. wasn't the frontman, pleasingly enough. I wish I could find their album again.

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I first heard him in a band called Juliet Armstrong, which I think was just before Math - I remember being happy when I saw that he had made records after that. I really like his first couple of albums; I think they're really surprising and funny. "Satan Is Dead" and "These Hands of Mine" sound a bit samey to me, as if he's got what he's doing pretty much all figured out; while I still like those records, I find that I'm not as interested as I could be in what happens after that (did he make an all-Drum Buddy album?).

That's something indicative of how I feel about recordings in general, though. For example, when I hear the first three Deep Purple records, it still feels to me like so much is possible, even though I've heard what the group recorded afterwards, "what they turned out like", and I don't like that at all ("The Mule" excepted). It would make sense if I were to feel that most of what I thought was possible had already been effectively used up, as enough of was going to happen HAS happened already, and things didn't turn out like *I* would have hoped. Hearing the recordings, thirty-some years later, in what must be a context unimaginable at the time they were released, still makes me think so much is still possible, though. Hearing really small things from events that I know won't happen again (say, the bizarre and kind of awkward directions the guitar solos take and how great it is to hear the drums, bass and hand-clapping supporting something like that the way they do in the middle of "Kentucky Woman") and that I can only vaguely try to imagine, somehow makes me feel that lots of things might be different, and maybe better, than I think they are now. It makes me hopeful, and it's not for more records*, but for better contexts in which to make or put music - I don't think it's even about music, directly. I just really value hearing sounds made when people haven't figured it all out yet.

* Sadly, I do still want more records, but if it were only that, I'd love the idea of all the studious new-old-style punk records that seem to have all the moves down to the correct song-titles and typefaces on the jackets. I'd just pretend it's only what it sounds like that matters (and therefore, only what *I* think that matters). It just seems self-absorbed and/or cynical to me to make records like that and sell them. I can't even imagine why it would seem like a good idea to make certain kinds of music recordings if you know that much about what they're supposed to sound (and look) like when they're done. Punk recordings, for example, don't make any sense to me without real uncertainty involved on some, or many, levels. I know there are a lot of uses people have for music, though, and I think a lot of what I feel might only be relevant in some limited cultural situations.

Tom (other), Saturday, 21 December 2002 08:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Huge dud.

adam (adam), Saturday, 21 December 2002 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
I'm listening to the new album and generally liking it. It seems like a nice little album for pregaming to.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 20 June 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"pregaming"?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Pregaming = pre going out clubbing, having a few drinks around the house with friends to save money.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

And have more fun in a lot of ways

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Still dud. The man is a menace!

adam (adam), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You're a loon!!

Hating Quintron = hating fun.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
erm, .... I wouldn't recommend getting drunk and listening to Quintron.

Funny you should mention that 2 years and 1 month ago because that is exactly what I am doing right now! I'm listening to his first two albums (released as BLB 049 on one CD).

This is where I ended with Quintron. Funny how 8 years ago it seemed a little TOO noisey, YET STILL COOL, but not cool enough to buy more and now I'm sitting here wondering why I don't have all of it. I am a bit of a completist once I decide I like something.

This guy's fucking amazing. What's up with the "Drum Buddy"? Is that a real machine or a fuckin' joke?

I have never seen Quintron play live, but if ONE PERSON is doing all of THIS, I need to see it. Fucking incredible.

Snoozefest, Monday, 17 January 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Bulb Records is going to be recognized worldwide as an amazingly cool anomoly by the year 2025, isn't it?

Snoozefest, Monday, 17 January 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

God damn people, how many times do I have to say it? Dud. He's like everything that's wrong with New Orleans.

adam (adam), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The other Tom's post up there is spot fucking on.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You're fucking nuts, adam. This reminds me of a less aggressive more fun version of:

Big Black
Butthole Surfers
Anton LaVey
Incredible Drumming Assholes

This is great shit. "It could've been an airplane. It could have been a helicopter. It could have been a train. It could have been another party exactly like us that we didn't know about..."

Snoozefest, Monday, 17 January 2005 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

What's up with the "Drum Buddy"? Is that a real machine or a fuckin' joke?

well, it's real insofar as he has one. during the "drum buddy demo tour," before he played, he would show a 30-40 minute informational movie about the drum buddy, and then offer to build one for 1000 dollars (actually ir's still for sale). and he was selling the drum buddy demo record, which my friend bought (it's exactly what it promises to be).

so the drum buddy is a functional instrument that he built and is selling--on that level it's real.

but somehow, to me, that doesn't preclude the whole thing being a huge fucking joke...

Matt B. (Matt B.), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

But, the drum buddy isn't what I hear on his albums, right? It sounds like a real drums set pounding out all tribal beats. That drum buddy looks like it would sound stupid.

Snoozefest, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think he sells drum buddies anymore.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Adam, I don't know what your problem with Quintron is, but your claim that he is everything that's wrong with new orleans is WAY wrong. I can totally understand hating the whole 9th ward hipster scene and the way they flock to spellcaster's like it's the CBGBs, but the guy makes some fantastically fun music and spellcaster lounge is one of the few clubs left in this town that books any bands that are worth a shit.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Live show is definitely classic. I'm still kicking myself for letting a friend talk me out of the New Year's show w/ Quintron & Reigning Sound.

record-wise, I've only got Unmasked Organ Light-Year... and honestly don't play it that much.

Will (will), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

He has a stupid mustache. Also Jon pointed out quite rightly that I hate fun.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm very wary of music that people insist is "fun." Like, I'll be the judge of that, right? And what's the deal with having your club in the 9th Ward? I live Uptown. So build your shit Uptown, Quintron, and maybe I'll forgive the mustache.

F-Drunk, did you ever see the Electrical Spectacle before they kind of imploded? To me, they were Quintron done right.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I never really liked them. It might just be because I'm a theremin purist (ie i hate people who treat it like a wacky sound making gimmick), but i never really could get into their stuff. They seemed like their name and nothing more. A couple guys who had some awesome vintage synths but no clue about how to make good music with them. Also, their drummer's grooves always came off as really studied and it didn't seem like he ever actually listened to any dance music, but just assumed he could play it because he looked down on simplistic disco beats. Quintron comes at it more from a goofy punk rock attitude and he's way better at engaging the audience than ES ever were. And don't get me started on the buttons. I can't stand them (though they totally kick macrosuck's ass as far as new 80s fetishist acts go in new orleans).
I think of Glory Bee as quintron taken to a new level.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Confidential to Paul Eater: I have the Math album, the one with the hand-painted cover. I can do an mp3 conversion. I just have to got my turntables back, and go back to 4th avenue and pay the guys who have been keeping my records for me. So it may be some time. Why am I typing this? Because these things will happen, but by that time I may have forgotten.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ah the math record... asked pete larsen if he'd ever re-release that... and got a hearty, "hell no, quintron would be pissed" or something like that. bummerness cause i'd love to hear it.
m.

So I was watching the new Spinal Tap movie and watching the credits and among all the musician cameos, apparently Quintron was the "one-man-band drummer" I believe in the audition scene!
