i think Fearless flatters Liam by getting him in to do a track like this...i mean this is what Oasis themselves should sound like (see also 'Let Forever Be' and the Cooper Temple Clause' 'Who Needs Enemies') but dont you find the lyrics just typically trite? "If I dont go crazy I'll lose my miiiind" - yes very good, but you went crazy and lost your teeth instead
other than that, the shimmering guitars are quite nice but its all a bit 'eeh' dont you think? i'm listening to a bit of 'Dead Elvis' again now and wishing DIV would put the electro back into their stuff a bit more...i downloaded the new album but not listened to it properly yet tho i must admit

Kenneth Anger to thread?

that track.. Hands around My Throat... is superb. that's put the electro back into their stuff

But the album I have no intention of buying having heard it on Xfm playback. Two tracks are ruined by Liam Gallagher and Weller - two absolute trad rock twerps I hate.

If they made a special version of the album minus these two tracks and replaced them with remixes then I would be interested.

I don't like TCTC, but I have described them as Oasis with Amps turned up to Max !

'Hands Around My Throat' doesnt have much of an 'electro' feel to me at all - sure it fits neatly with 'Rippin Kittin' or whatever but there's not much in it other than a neat veering guitar hook

i just dont get why DIV would wanna draft in the likes of Gallagher and Weller - are they looking for the sales boost? what about the cred drop?!

i think Liam Howlett is wary of working with Liam G or the Appletons but surely this is bound to happen also?

...to increase airplay on 6music, Xfm and probably Virgin radio. And Get NME and Q more interested.

but NME and Q loved DIV already based on 'The Contino Sessions' - 'Aisha' was especially huge and rightly so...'Dead Elvis' has a lot of guitar (nothing rocks more than 'Dirt' after all) but it was tagged as big beat when it came out so perhaps thats why Fearless and co were keen to move on

"Leather/Girls" rules. very New Order/MBV-ish

Wait, are we talking about the band Scorpio Rising (circa 1992, whose emblem was a devil with a flame-thrower and who put a still from the Malcolm McDowell film "If" on the cover of their debut album)? If so, I liked their cover of the Doors' "Peace Frog." That's all I have to add, really.

Scorpio Rising is a patchy album, the Weller contribution particularly unlistenable, but I love both singles so far. Is the Liam Gallagher track really a contender for Christmas number one, as I've heard mentioned a couple of times? "Hands Around My Throat" is an electro record, it's just one with synths instead of guitars on it. There's an Adult. mix, apparently, has anyone heard it? Also, is the Adult. LP any good? Their "Silver Screen" mix is possibly even better than the LRD one.

The best thing Death In Vegas have done is "Rocco". The LP version is good but on the single version they turn the bass up to 11 and play it with a sander.

yeh i have the 'Rocco' remix on a compilation and its 'live' as they say....i dont suppose you know the lyrics of the sample do you? something that ends '.../if i diiiiie where would you be?'

What I don't get about the DIV/Liam single is that... oh... it's "Pictures of Matchstick Men" by Status Quo, isn't it? Or am I the last person to notice?

Oh, go shoot me someone...

Rob M (Rob M), Saturday, 14 December 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

No, shoot me instead, "synths instead of guitars" should have been "guitars instead of synths", obviously. I can't remember how "Pictures of Matchstick Men" goes, and when I try "he painted matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs" worms its way into my brain. I don't know where the "if I die..." sample comes from or its lyrics, I'm afraid.

I now have the Adult. mix of "Hands" and that is, without any doubt at all, electro. To the point where they're possibly taking the piss, in fact, there's a jarring snatch of "Sweet Dreams".

Mike (mratford), Saturday, 14 December 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Rob you're OTM, tho funnily enough i always quite liked 'pictures of matchstick men'
