Only pick one.....your choice of the best single of 2002

Mine? "No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age, but a loooooooong mile.

Yours?

For a laugh, throw in your vote for WORST single of 2002 as well. Mine would be that painfully shrill, tuneless Truth Hurths numbah.

Have at it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 December 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Best-Cosmos-Take Me With You

Worst-that one that goes "I can't stand to fly, I'm not that naive". Boy oh boy does that suck.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

"Worst-that one that goes "I can't stand to fly, I'm not that naive". Boy oh boy does that suck."

Oh my god, Ronan....you're so spot on! That's "Superman" by Five for Fighting, and that sucks worse than anything else I can think of.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree, worse than anything I can actually remember.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

best: Kylie Minogue, "Love at First Sight"
worst: Shakira, "Underneath Your Clothes"

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Shakira? Booo, Matos. Boooo.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 December 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This week? "Danger! High Voltage" And I'm with Matos on the worst. That song annoys the shit out of me.

J (Jay), Saturday, 14 December 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I also think it's shit.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 December 2002 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

well, then that goes for all y'all. And I ain't saying "boo-urns."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 December 2002 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I am cheating because I voted for "Work It" as my fave single and nobody wants to hear anyone prattle on about that YET AGAIN. (this will not sway my PMFG6 commentary tho.)

BEST: The Rapture, "House of Jealous Lovers" (and I went on record here a few months ago yawping 'bur hur durh uhn I dun gettit')

WORST: That Big Tymerz song with the really really fresh beat and fucking awful terrible lyrics. That one that's getting all the airplay right now and has lyrics about boring cars (dammit can some MC pls brag about owning a Maserati Ghibli SS for once?)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 14 December 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

best: toss-up between "Sk8er Boi" and "Chop Suey"

worst: I'm really tempted to say "Hot in Herre" but "In My Place" might win this.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 14 December 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm giving it to "Sk8er Boi" actually. If "Toxicity" was this year it would win though.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 14 December 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

no doubt's hella good

jack, Sunday, 15 December 2002 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Best: "Down 4 U" Ja Rule And His Bitchez
Worst: "Foolish" Ashanti

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 15 December 2002 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Best: "Dove" by Moony.
Worst: "Getouttathaway" or whatever it was called, by the Vines.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 15 December 2002 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Best: "Hot In Herre"

Douglas, Sunday, 15 December 2002 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

"whats yr flava" by creepy mustash man

dz (lucylurex), Sunday, 15 December 2002 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

is tha best, i can't select a single worst 'cause i'm just such a super positive type dude

dz (lucylurex), Sunday, 15 December 2002 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Did they release the dancehall mix of "Grindin" as a single? If so, that's my pick.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 15 December 2002 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril Lavigne's cover of "Chop Suey!".

man, Sunday, 15 December 2002 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Best either "work it" or "sk8er boi". Possibly "round round" too. They both make me feel really happy.

Worst is easily that baltanger-related thing "I got so much love to give to you". It's so bad that it actually makes me feel angry when I hear it.

Pashmina, Sunday, 15 December 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst:"She hates me"-Puddle of Mudd

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 15 December 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, that was bloody awful, wasn't it.

Pashmina, Sunday, 15 December 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Jesus, etc' by Wilco. It made me buy the album -- straight out of my food money -- and now I don't listen to it anymore. That's what defines a single for me, I guess.

Brian Mowrey (Brian Mowrey), Sunday, 15 December 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

"Underneath It All", nae doot

worst is the new Puffy song

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 15 December 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Best: Ashanti, "Happy" (that damn Gap Band sample - and no one can be surprised at me since I nuthreaded about this circa July) or ok, if you're barfing all over your 17" IMAC screens right now - Beyonce "Work it Out" - tres neglected par le public!

Worst: that fake reggae Sean Paul dutty garbage vomitmucus, it sounds like the ghost of an impoverished 67 year old man yelping during a hernia, 'tis awful, awful, awful!!!!! that Clipse grinding song could win this "complicated" category too, ook, i know what OPO means, sssh

Best: "Down 4 U" Ja Rule And His Bitchez
Worst: "Foolish" Ashanti

B-b-but Sterling, surely the *best* thing about Irv Gotti's "Down 4 U" record-label-superadvertisement was Ashanti's silky, anonymous "vocal style," no tossing off lines like "i'll b ur down-ass-chick," no? Or are you all hot and bothered over, ahem, Vita (it can't be Ja, the gawd of pain and lurve forbid! ) "Foolish" was lame though, a repeat X 3.

Someone's who's going back to work imme., Sunday, 15 December 2002 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst:"She hates me"-Puddle of Mudd

that was so bad though, it was kinda good, i thought, it an uber-unintentional-self-parodic-meta-way? at least the cheesy-cutter video was entertaining, when they weren't showing any shots of the fugly band members, that is

Vic, Sunday, 15 December 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That new Ja Rule/Bobbby Brown single, "Thug Lovin'" is pretty god fucking awful.

Bobby Brown is scarier than Glenn Danzig could ever hope to be.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 15 December 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

'How You Remind Me' was released in the UK only this year at least, surely? if not i vote for The Calling's 'Wherever You Will Go' or whatever its called

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 15 December 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll vote for "Work It".. it still amazes me.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 15 December 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

that was so bad though, it was kinda good

No, actually.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 15 December 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

best: was gonna' pick cosmos but seeing as ronan has given it a shout i'll nominate los hermanos' "quetzal" on underground resistance.

worst: elvis vs jxl "a little less conversation"

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 16 December 2002 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The worst single is The Music "Take the Long Road and Walk it". Case closed.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 16 December 2002 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Still "The Logical Song" by Scooter, though my colleague Mirs Houston would like to register her vote for "A Little Less Conversation" for reasons as yet unspecified.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 December 2002 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Best? Ms. Dynamite : It takes More

phil jones (interstar), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

BEST: Cosmos - Take Me With You
WORST: The Vines - Get Free

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, scratch that 'worst' choice. Take The Long Road And Walk It by The Music is BY MILES the worst single of the year. Utterly, utterly charmless.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 December 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think you can deny "work it" is #1 but don't forget "without me"!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Best: That new Busta thing that sounds like the end of the earth
Worst: Toss up between that Spiderman theme song and Blue's "One Love"

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Ass. Forgot "without me".

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 16 December 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

As I was just saying on the Osymyso thread ;)...

Hmmm...yes....that Black Rebel Motorcycle thing that sounded like "Spirit In The Sky" was pretty fucking appalling an' all.

Venga, Monday, 16 December 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothin' - Noreaga, or Grindin'

The worst is that "you body is a wonderland" dave matthews as a teenager guy. He makes me want to put an axe into the television.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh God, yeah, that was way worse than my choices. (I guess I'm just a little befuddled that no one else seems to think "It's getting hot in here so take off all your clothes" is dumber than Warrant.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Best - Work It, or maybe Grindin' - and then again, maybe it is that Yngwie meltdown on the plane.

Worst - this is a giveaway: Las Ketchup's surreal Rapper's Delight rip-off. Or maybe it's so bad it's good. Idon't know. Now I'm confused. Did Ronan Keating release anything this year?

Jay K (Jay K), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Best - "Work It" (or "Hot in Herre" or "Weak Become Heroes". Technically last year, but "Emerge" and the "Poney" EP are also contenders)

Worst - either "Hero" (spiderman one) or one of H & Claire's singles

[Anthony - I share your bafflement over all this hate for "Underneath Your Clothes".]

Jeff W, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"She Hates Me" is categorically awful and undefendable.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

fwiw i think 'Take The Long Road And Walk It' is fine and dandy

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Ballboy - Where Do the Nights of Sleep Go To When They Do Not Come To Me

, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Best - toss up between Fallacy & Fusion's "The Ground Breaker" or dear old Ballboy... think I'll go for F&F, just, if only because rapping about your socks has never been so much fun.

Worst - there's a lot, but it still feels like the Manics' "Have we not got enough for the Greatest Hits? What? Another one? Oh, god, go on then, but I'm not missing Scrapheap Challenge for this" effort was most tiresome by a distance.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Think my answers in both these categories for next year may well be signed, sealed and delivered, actually:

Best: Electric Six/The Delgados (All You Need Is Hate, so good I'd even go street-teaming for it)
Worst: Love Inc., "You're A Superstar"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll defend "She Hates Me". It's way catchier and uptempo than that song about getting his ass-smacked. With so many overwraught songs about how women mess up dumbass rock dudes' minds, I can't see the comical one being the worst.

But then again, I'm Fred Durst. You know what time it is.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"She Hates Me" is quite good and funny, too.

Best single: not decided yet.

Worst single: "Little By Little" by Oasis is the only song I can remember really hating this year. I feel a bit lame saying that as I just saw the Live Forever Britpop doc and Noel G came across as a lovely bloke but no, LBL is just awful - all the plod of Oasis past plus a lyric out of the Darren "I'm wise, me" Hayes songwriting school. NB Darren Hayes' "Insatiable" is second worst.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Best: N.O.R.E. - Nothin'
I can't think of any songs that have really annoyed. All th bad ones have been bland and forgetful

Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

She Hates Me? Ugh, it's the same as Nickelback, it's like some ugly dishevelled loser whom you don't even know or like assailing you on a train or at a bus stop and telling you in what he believes to be a "wry" fashion about how some girl who never liked him anyway never liked him anyway. I DON'T CARE!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"She Hates Me" if flatly indefensible. Sorry, Tom.

My biggest problem with it? Honestly? The fact that the guitarist is wearing a Minor Threat t-shirt in the video. To sully the mighty majesty of the `Threat like that is truly dishonoring the fire.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex by the sounds of it this fire of yours has been dishonoured an awful lot. Are you sure it's not out?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Puddle of Mudd's on 'Now 53', bleeped, which I've bought my 9-year old nephew for Xmas. I don't think it's going to take him long to figure out what goes in the gap between "She" and "n' Hates Me".

Jeff W, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"Are you sure it's not out?"

A dishonored fire is not a doused fire, merely one that might feel cold to the touch......but SEARS THE SOUL!

http://bobbyrain3.freeyellow.com/flamingscab.gif

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Best: I'm gonna go with N*E*R*D's "Rock Star"

Worst: whoever did that "didn't you ever learn don't hit a lady/kicking your ass would be a pleasure" song, I think it was Puddle of Mudd or Staind or Nickelback or Disturbed, one of those cockgoblins

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Cockgoblins! Hahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the remix of Justin Timberlake!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Nickelback, with "Never Again" there... touching? Not 'arf!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I POOP ON THE FIRE!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

And it turns out Love Inc. has already come out. Ohh, the dilemm-aaaah....

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)
