There can be only ONE Glenn Danzig, though. Nice wings, eh?

My friends & I saw these guys play an outdoor show in 2003 or so. There were dozens crows flying over the stage when "Silver and Cold" played and we high fived each other, it was so perfect.
― The Ten Things I Hate About Commandments (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 21:42 (fifteen years ago)
I never really got into these guys but I always enjoyed Davey Havoc, he deliberately chose this like boy adventurer name.
― The Ten Things I Hate About Commandments (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)
And Davey looking/sounding like girl Danzig, too, is great. I never got into regular brand boy Danzig, either, but both of these guys are pretty solid dues. Would have a crow-infested bbq with either of them.
― The Ten Things I Hate About Commandments (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)
Danzig >>>>>>>>>> Davey (sorry, I'm sure most would agree, though).

It depends on if we're talking about physical appearance or musical talent.

new album is awesome
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)
this song is especially something else; whole album is simultaneously very dark and very new wave, hooks for miles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llVl-SKdMec
it's hard to characterize what i find exciting about this without lapsing into vague cliches but like i didn't expect an afi album in 2013 to be remotely all right
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)

Just listened to Black Sails in the Sunset last night to prep me for listening to this tonight. How I love that album.
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 17 October 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)
haha I remember being a fan during the snotty cali punk to full on goth screaming phase...
― 乒乓, Thursday, 17 October 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)
can't wait until y'all hear "wild"
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 October 2013 17:43 (twelve years ago)
still... remarkable to me that a band whose initials were thought by fans to mean 'abuncha fucking idiots', who had a song ranking breakfast cereals and who patterned themselves after reservoir dogs transformed themselves literally overnight into a proto-MCR band with songs called 'malleus maleficarum'
― 乒乓, Thursday, 17 October 2013 17:45 (twelve years ago)
but I will be checking this new album out!
Started with Wild cos why not! Great running track.
I Hope You Suffer is super, that descending synth is v menacing. Great hook. Great middle 8.
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 18 October 2013 03:27 (twelve years ago)
glad to hear this is good! i got into mid-period AFI (after they switched from snotty-punk to goth-punk but before they got too flashy) via an ex girlfriend way back, but i really couldn't get into the last couple at all.
― JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 18 October 2013 03:36 (twelve years ago)
The Conductor is pretty massive. I really am a sucker for deep low end horn stabs, pulled me in right away. otm about so many hooks.
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 18 October 2013 03:43 (twelve years ago)
i'm only really familiar with sing the sorrow, which i loved in college. i listened to the last two and didn't care for either. so i'm sort of enthusiastic about the new one from that kind of background, but i also think it might be a whole new order of quality from them.

Sing The Sorrow struck the perfect balance. Haven't listened to anything since Decemeberundreground but my interest in that music scene was already waining by that point.
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 18 October 2013 04:10 (twelve years ago)
sing the sorrow is where i got off the train, i think. barely remember 'girls not grey' from that album

first two albums are pretty classic pop punk
also lol @ dexter holland providing vocals on three tracks off black sails, i had forgotten all about that
― 乒乓, Friday, 18 October 2013 04:16 (twelve years ago)
I got into them at Black Sails, was def a little weird when StS came out but it fit what was going on at the time and they did it really well imo.
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 18 October 2013 04:19 (twelve years ago)
Lol those early albums. idk
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 18 October 2013 04:20 (twelve years ago)
Black Sails - All Hollows ep - The Art Of Drowning
That's a good run of late 90s punk.
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 18 October 2013 04:21 (twelve years ago)
Dexter Holland is a good fit addition on those songs tbf, Clove Smoke Catharsis hook is still on my mind after all these years.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_gIDrgzxXo
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 18 October 2013 04:25 (twelve years ago)
Serious Brad check out Black Sails tho.
yeah, dexter holland is a natural fit actually. but picture dexter going from recording pretty fly for a white guy ----> black sails
kinda embarrassed that my wheelhouse on ilx ends up being late 90s pop punk. why couldn't i have been into dylan or springsteen or fleetwood mac at a young age
― 乒乓, Friday, 18 October 2013 04:28 (twelve years ago)
reading through both AFI threads, i do believe that i may be the only person on ILX who is familiar with AFI pre-black sails. jesus

Love Daveys vocals on Heart Stops off the new one.
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 18 October 2013 04:44 (twelve years ago)
Those new songs don't do much for me, but i've listened to older stuff for the first time in couple of years today - liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Black Sails, All Hallows and The Art of Drowning are all solid, TAoD amazed me actually, didn't remember how good it was (this used to be my fav when I was seriously into them in high school).
Days of the Phoenix is great obv, this single might be their career peak for me - with title track, Wester, and A Winter's Tale (how this didn't end on TAoD LP I don't know, seriously great song). I mean, these are probably the best hooks they ever written, all in less than 10 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-scFvAJx3g
What amazes me is how smoothly the evolution from early, punk period into StS and later albums went - especially considering that they changed guitarist (and main songwriter) in the process.

davey sounds a little like james hetfield now????
― 乒乓, Saturday, 19 October 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)
Where you getting that from?
― Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Saturday, 19 October 2013 20:41 (twelve years ago)
on the first track, the way he pronounces stuff like "out of the cha-os i can hear your naaa-ame", that's a straight hetfield intonation
― 乒乓, Monday, 21 October 2013 11:46 (twelve years ago)
Oh yeah I hear that for sure.
