I believe that's a blatant rip-off of the costume Jack Kirby designed for Galactus, a sort of Shiva character in the Marvel Universe who devours whole planets. The Silver Surfer, who became Galactus' herald in order to save his own planet from destruction, also averted the Earth's mastication and got himself permanently exiled there in the process. Galactus is a merciless hungry fucker.

So it's not really a robot. Sorry.
