I'm relistening to Slickaphonics and I'm liking it a lot more than I did the first time.

But it is really no Unwound.

Slickaphonics sounds like a lot of the Epic Soundtracks penned Swell Maps songs (or "soundscapes").

i'd say comparison to unwound is sort of apples to oranges...

You are aware that at least two people from Unwound were involved?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Monday, 16 December 2002 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was two guys from Jimmy Eat World. And naked chicks.

Wait you have that backwards... Slint begat Jimmy Eat World I think!

"Think John Cage meets Kraftwerk meets Mouse On Mars meets mental illness... Slickaphonics is a collage that no one has ever created and never will again. It can send you into convulsions and then bring on a stupifying inner peace unlike any other work. It is one of the most abstract albums I have ever heard. And you need to hear it, now. "

"In 1997, Justin Trosper and Brandt Sandeno (both of Unwound) released 24 bizarre sound experiments that ranged from the noisy to the noisiest. The album definitely qualifies as one of the 50 strangest records released in the history of music-- you just kind of have to witness it for yourself. That was the Replikants in its original form."

I saw 'em live and it was nothing like the two records... it was the only thing I heard them do that did remind me of Unwound. (they played with Hella, the ex Models, The Seconds, and I forget who else). It was dronier and noisier.

Are Replikants "active" now that Unwound est kaputt? Anything new coming out of that group?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Monday, 16 December 2002 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...
I still love Unwound more, but yeah, the Replikants.

The last Replikants record is a lost classic of late 1990s American underground rock; like the last Men's Recovery Project (What does Ned think about them??!!?) record. I imagine there's a bunch of good compilation tracks too.... :/

What does Ned think about them??!!?

I need to hear them more! Really I only know them by reputation (which is considerable).

Ian Johnson to thread for Losing My Edge posts.

I thank yew. Actually maybe I DO have an album around courtesy of Ben. (It would be like me to have reviewed it and not remembered it -- the reviewing, not necessarily the album.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

Is it the 2005 best of? Also, I just realized they did a 2001 LP on KRS/5RC that I haven't heard. NEED TO GET IT.

Replikants are fine, but they do nothing to ease the pain of losing Unwound. I listened to Corpse Pose like five times today-- and to think that I disliked the song back when I first got Repetition.
