Anthony, we should construct a mirror list or something, we'll NEVER agree, will we? ;-) Keep in mind I'm a Slowdive fanatic and think that his career has been one long, slow slide from effortless brilliance to well-meaning but unremarkable, dull as ditchwater tedium. Saw him do an instore for the solo album and the man defined well-meaning boredom.

heh. I'm sure an instore from this guy would be death. And I thought Mojave 3 was kinda boring. Which ever group of his put out Ask Me Tomorrow, damn that was a chore. Don't think I've heard Slowdive.

Basically the appeal for me is its like Belle & Sebastian with some gravity. It's nice to hear some lullabies by people that aren't all poncey & posey (to use Martin Hannett-from-Hype! speak).

Ned, I have to second the opinion re: Halsted, he started to lose me midway through Out of Tune. As for the rest, I must admit I've never heard of the last two artists. My 'indie cred' is obviously fading fast...

Yeah, Slate is using this guy more and more, which is way too much. I wish they'd take a cue from their James Surowiecki Red Hot Chili Peppers review and get people who make no pretenses of being rock critics to review records. Reading Mickey Kaus or Josh Marshall doing a record review would be more interesting than just another Ben Greenman type. That or they could actually get someone good to do them (doesn't Jess share an area code with Slate?)

Wait, is this really considered an "unsurprising" list? Samuels sounds to me like he's actually sort of out of the loop with music, but it also seems like that's left him talking about records completely out of left-field: I mean, where on earth would you expect to see the Sunshine Fix on a "five best records" list? It's like he writes about NYT-Magazine indie but somehow missed the memo on which bands are supposed to get the attention.
