A Quick One - C or D?

I'm of the mindset that the Who did nothing but classics until after Moon bit it. Except for "Eminence Front", I thought that was pretty funky.

Classic. "So Sad About Us" - that's the one. I recently heard some band doing a completely lifeless cover of the whole "A Quick One" suite, it was pretty sad. I've always thought "So Sad About Us" sounded like a Police song (if there was such a thing as a good Police song).

all their albums have got lotsa filler but that one's pretty great

Ooh, Shakey Mo Collier, You had better pray that Tom Millar doesn't read this thread. I actually participated in a big ol brawl, battle royale type that was started because one of Tom's best friends said that "Walking On The Moon" sucked. Tom will go to any length to defent the police.

Personally, I think the Police are OK, I just wanna fight Sting, only I would get a bat and he would get a chair that he's tied to.

After "Run Run Run", "Boris" and "So Sad", it's pretty slight, and it never attains anything resembling a flow. Compared to the total classics that came immediately before and after, A Quick One has to be deemed a dud.

Don't forget to mention that we had to wait until you put New Bomb Turks on the stereo before we could fight properly, and that even after that concession I soundly toppled and drew blood from a man weighing at least twice as much as me, and he had a beard.

True dat.

Don't often find myself listening to the album, esp. with "Sell Out" and "Live at Leeds" (and that new and fab double-CD reissue of "Sing My Generation") right near it.

On the other hand, if the only evidence that existed of the Who was their performance of "A Quick One, While He's Away" at the Rolling Stones' Rock 'n' Roll Circus, I'd probably have devoted years of my life to trying to find out more about them. (Supposedly, that performance is why the Stones didn't release the movie for close to 30 years--the Who blew them off the stage.)

yeah supposedly...but when i finally got to see that shit i thought the Stones were real good & that Who bit is merely sorta OK.

My father instilled a deep hatred of the Who into my impressionable mind in between teaching me the meaning of respect, so dud. Curiously enough, he has a concert t-shirt but insists that he bought because it was cheap. (lies!)

Classic, except for the horrid Daltrey-written song. I even like the ones written by Keith Moon, especially "I Need You", which everyone I talk to seems to hate. It's a lovely, ragged slice of Brit-pop, The Who going absolutely nuts in the studio, complete with a mid-song sound collage of what it's like to be at a pop star party in 60's Swinging London. It barely holds together - and there are several parts where Moon's drumming almost sends the track spinning off into space -- but it only makes me love it even more.

Oh, and about "So Sad About Us" -- right on! One of the best British Invasion songs of all time! (...and the birth of emo-punk???)

fifteen years pass...

I've always thought of this album as being weak in comparison to the albums immediately before and after it, but listening to it again tonight I'm finding it to be mostly enjoyable - I just wish this thing was better recorded. Moon puts in a killer performance on 'I Need You', but the way it's been recorded renders the track almost literally unlistenable.
