i'm curious whether folks who so hailed "Feelin' On Yo Booty" will champion this over-the-top masterpiece in the same way...

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't resist the completely shameless exploitation of the salacious metaphor, but really, what gets me is the talking over the beat and the "preview" of the remix at the end.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
I can't believe this thread got ignored. The song is really, really great. A friend had to convince me of this, but I'm totally sold. The part about being "a football coach the way you got me playing the field" is just genius. And the fact that he's so brazen/stupid to release a song that makes him sound like a driver's ed instructor considering his taste for the tender pink... It's just bewildering. But the beat's great and his voice is fantastic. The remix (which I'm hearing for the first time right now) doesn't add anything. Stick to the original single.

one month passes...
I finally like this song. I don't know what did it. First I thought it was boring, then I thought it was TOO silly, then I thought it was kinda scary, then I thought it was mildly amusing and sometime today I heard a little "toot toot" a little "beep beep" in my head and BAM!

I really like it. Best ad for alcoholism since the early works of Richard "R." Burton.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 August 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I still hate this song. It's still plodding and unconvincing. I still want to slap all of you for liking it so much that it was inescapable until Beyonce hit the scene.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

dan perry you are UNAMERICAN.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, yes, r kelly should have gone to jail and is probably going to hell, but if the WHOLE NATION can forgive him, why can't you?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Because HIS SONG SUCKS FEROCIOUS POXY ASS.

AND I'M LIKE, SO WHAT?, I'M DRUNK.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If that's the best thing he can come up with when drunk, he needs some harder substances (preferably whatever he was taking when he decided it was a good idea to record a song called "I Like (The Crotch On You)", whose only flaw is that it isn't set to the tune of that one Sprite jingle).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

That song would only be good if it had been written and performed by wesley willis. at least then the comedic value would rise, and the barf factor would decrease!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

omg emily! wouldn't it be like, so keeerazzzy, if a deranged person made r&b! that's fuckin nutty!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(also dan, you know damn well that neither of us are poet laureats while drunk.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i wonder how 'Ignition (Remix)' will hold up 5 years from now...I just mean in that I wonder if it will get the same love once the novelty has died down that the odious R Kelly somehow made a record that EVERYONE seems to like...except me and Dan Perry (i've kinda luke-warmed to it a bit tho, as I have with Evanescence)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the rhymes on it are weaker than people care to notice, or notice to care - 'all in up yo greeeel, tryna getcha to a hoteeeel' - bleh

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"weak" doesn't equal "bad", steve.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i think there are plenty of deranged people making r&b, rk being one of theme. i was just overstating the obvious. or maybe not for some.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

it can do, it just seems a bit lame to me when i actually do notice the lyrics

now i'm having mischievous fun imagining cross-fading this track with Dizzee goin '15? she's under age that's raw!'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yeah i've thought about that too. oh, r...

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Great little piece by Neil Strauss in today's NY Times about R. Kelly and how his albums/singles/productions have been huge successes despite his troubles. He winds up saying something very un-rock-critic, which is that the private life is basically and even studiously irrelevant to the work, which remains at a high level.

I'm not subscribed on line but someone who is might want to link to the article.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 14 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

'any publicity...' rule applies to R Kelly it seems, but to Michael Jackson? i guess he went 'TOO far'

i really don't mind 'Ignition' much now i have to be honest

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

R. is about as big now as he was before the scandal. I don't think it has really affected his sales one way or the other. That was the point of the article as well.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the difference between RK and MJ is that our culture routinely sexualizes teenage girls to such a degree that there's this real ambivalence in the culture to the idea of teenage girls having sex (if not getting pissed on) whereas MJ went below the line we're comfortable admitting having confused sexualized feelings about (i.e. because they're LITTLE KIDS.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

also MJ supposedly fondled boys, one further transgression in most people's minds.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed. NY Times article.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

don't think that will work for ppl who are not registered at the Times (it is free folks, sign up)

here is the text.

Flying Above the Shadows
By NEIL STRAUSS

From the vantage point of the pop charts, this seems to be R. Kelly's moment. His most recent CD, "Chocolate Factory," entered the Billboard charts at No. 1 and went on to sell two million copies. He has three singles dominating R&B radio. He produced, wrote and arranged a comeback album for the Isley Brothers, "Body Kiss," which also hit No. 1 on the charts, and the latest CD he masterminded, "Ice Cream" by the female duo JS, just entered the Billboard Top 40.

Then Mr. Kelly walked away from this summer's BET Awards with a trophy for best male R&B artist of 2003. And he announced this month that he would crown these successes with an immodestly titled greatest-hits album, "The `R' in R&B Collection, Volume 1," due Sept. 9.

That's impressive for a musician facing trial on charges that could bring 15 years in prison. As most fans know, in the past year Mr. Kelly was arrested twice, in Illinois and Florida, and charged with possessing and producing child pornography. He has pleaded not guilty. The police in Chicago say they have videos and photos showing him having sex with minors, and a video the police have cited is circulating on the Internet. Using Mr. Kelly's first name, his spokesman Allan Mayer said, "As Robert has said all along, he doesn't believe any of the charges are warranted, and he has complete faith that when all the facts come out, people will see that he's no criminal."

Of all the accusations of misconduct or crimes that fans may be willing to overlook, charges of sex with minors are generally not among them. Such charges set back the careers of two of rock's greatest innovators, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. And more recently, eight years after a lawsuit by parents of a child who was allegedly molested were settled out of court, Michael Jackson is still doing damage control. Such allegations, on a smaller scale, are nothing new to Mr. Kelly: he married the singer Aaliyah when she was 15. (The marriage was annulled soon after.)

Many celebrities live in a world of high promiscuity, and their managers live in fear of accusations — real or spurious — that can derail a career overnight. But even with a trial set for fall, the commercial power of R. Kelly is as strong as ever. Even without the accusations, his relative longevity is impressive in the fast-changing world of modern R&B. He is scheduled to headline at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 23.

So how has Mr. Kelly pulled this off? He has done it, more or less, by seeming to ignore his legal problems and releasing hit after hit, each one focusing on his promiscuity. His last three smashes — "Ignition," "Snake" and "Thoia Thoing," a new track from his forthcoming greatest-hits album — all follow the same plot line. Mr. Kelly is at a concert or a club, he is drinking, he sees a girl dancing rather sexily, he likes what he sees, he seduces her, and then he takes her to one or all of the following locations: the after-party, the hotel lobby and his room.

In these songs what happens next, as in the videos that his prosecutors possess, is not left to the imagination. Mr. Kelly writes sexual metaphors so transparent that one would be hard pressed to call them innuendo.

Listening to Mr. Kelly's recent hits (or watching the well-greased women dancing around him in the videos) is an experience of cognitive dissonance. On one hand it seems odd that a man facing child pornography charges should still be singing about sexuality to teenage pop fans. On the other hand the songs — all written and produced by Mr. Kelly — are undeniably good. The beats are sweet and slick, the melodic rhymes stick in the listener's head like chewing gum, and the production sets the standard to beat for R&B singles.

These are songs that should be on the radio, and Mr. Kelly has found a solution to bad press that even the most expensive publicity agent on earth can't give a client: to excel at the craft that made one a celebrity in the first place. What is interesting about Mr. Kelly, who wrote the telling song "Age Ain't Nothin' But a Number" for Aaliyah, is the way in which he has chosen to ignore his troubles in his work. Shortly after he was charged in Miami, he was promoting his video for "Soldier's Heart," a tribute to United States servicemen in Afghanistan and Iraq (with proceeds benefiting their families). In the video Mr. Kelly sings in, on and around a giant American flag. Around the same time he rereleased the children's book about him, "I Can Fly: The R. Kelly Story."

On his most recent No. 1 CD, "Chocolate Factory," he still refers to himself as "the Pied Piper" without any apparent irony. And he has continued to produce and write licentious songs for young female singers. (One needs an annotated guide to get through some of the ridiculous sexual metaphors in "Ice Cream.") The songs in which Mr. Kelly actually reacts to or addresses his troubles, like "Heaven, I Need a Hug" and most of the tracks from his scrapped "Love Land" CD, are his least effective: musically, commercially and as character defense.

When Mr. Kelly was first arrested, Terry Hillard, the Chicago police superintendent, told reporters that it was "unfortunate to see Mr. Kelly's talents go to waste." But his recent success has shown that the fruits of one's talents are not necessarily linked to one's personal life. In a society that expects its celebrities to be role models, it is sometimes difficult to accept that a flawed person can still be a great artist.

H (Heruy), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I will gain respect for R. Kelly if his next video is a blinged-out piss orgy.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

interesting

the eternal paradox - how celebrities are presented as being so desirable and having such desirable lives, but the majority of them find it an immensely destabilising experience psychologically. you can't help but feel that the more millions R Kelly rakes in, the more damage is sustained by him (possibly guilt for having what appear to be curious problems that could range from sex addiction to substance abuse) and perhaps, the emptier he feels. when you give the impression you're in love with yourself THAT much, can you love anyone else the same? Kelly's songs refer to 'you' a hell of a lot, but somehow it really seems more about him.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan is completely otm... 'Ignition' is really, really weak. It sort of drifts aimlessly around occasionally getting a bit irritating, like a fly which needs to be swatted. I mean, compare it to Beyoncé! Just look at them side by side! There is no competition at all.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

but 'Ignition' IS undeniably 'feelgood' in that it captures that vibe and presents it in such a casual but sleazy manner - and i have started to appreciate the way the chorus just kinda waltzes in so effortlessly. but its cute rather than sexy (not talking about the odious Kelly himself here but rather the feel of the track itself). to put it simply it may be fun, but it's not MY fun...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

If "Ignition" actually did capture a feelgood vibe in a casual but sleazy manner, I would like it a lot more.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it does, for a helluva lotta people

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

dan kills joy.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 August 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not joy, it's soul-suckingly awful wearing a joy mask.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 August 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Not only is it emphatically NOT JOY, it's also really insipid. I mean... there's nothing TO it. It's bland and forgettable. I like my feelgood vibes to actually, well, feel good thanks.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 14 August 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it helps the song if you're a stupid college kid with his whole life to waste at frat parties. Because that's definitely why it works for me.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 14 August 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

For example, I'm on vacation right now, far away from most of my friends, with no parties to look forward to, and the song didn't seem near as good as it did a few months ago.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 14 August 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The funny thing is I totally agreed with Dan when I first heard it, and I'm not entirely sure what happened to change my mind. Thing is it's not really a party anthem for me. It's more of a closing credits kinda deal. A happily ever after, blissfully-unaware-that-hangover-is-imminent, "this gin & juice done erased all my lawsuits" thing. Maybe I'm just envious of his ability to block out his problems.

That rotating shot of R. Kelly's head in the video is fucked up.
