Hooligan House

So what's this all about - hoping this would add to my listening pleasure when I get back from work, I just nicked this ceedee off the cover of Muzik mag (honest - and i never do stuff like that), but stopped short of gobbing on their windows and pulling a V between my legs as i ran off.

can anyone give me a description of this (probably done-before) genre? I'm hoping either it's the Anti-Microhouse i.e. instead of perfecting, the sound of people kicking the living shit out of house music, or wild-pitch versions of Sham 69's 'Hurry up Harry'.

p.s. didn't have time to read the article, hence lack of knowledge of this 'scene'.

old dears to duff up an' all that.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

as always, the 'genre/scene' barely exists as it only seems to fit a handful of heavy 4/4 tracks doing the rounds right now, almost all by Audio Bullys with 'We Don't Care' being the obvious fuse...see the Audio Bullys thread as 'hooligan house' can be applied to the likes of what Jon Carter has been playing and making for years...a few years back people were talking about 'smash house' in the wake of big beat - basically dropping the breaks and going back to 4/4 but retaining the aggressive nature, attitude and vocal styles found on a lot of big beat tracks at that time

also, a few years back the Ballistic Brothers aka X-Press II released an album called (i think) 'London Hooligan Soul' but this was more along the lines of rude boy soul rather than house and tracks like 'Blacker' could not be any more passive

do search Graffiti (aka The Streets) 'What Is The Problem' tho if you want hard rowdy house with a slight punk streak, as well as the aforementioned Bullys and Carter's recent output - there ARE some other examples too but none spring to mind yet

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 December 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd have just called it "dirty" or something and broadened a bit, it's not really a genre though, I'd say it's just a way of describing that type of house tune.

That free CD is the best mix of the year. My mind is made up. Also a follow on to a thought I had when I first heard the Streets, which was last year on the Stanton Sessions, the remixed version of Has It Come To This. I don't like drum and bass much, I missed it really but English accented MCing over house or housey breaks is absolutely classic and more fitting than American MCing, as it should be. Also slightly off key singing by Mike Skinner or Mr Audio Bully in this case works amazingly.

Can anyone listen to that "baaaaaaaaaby I got these feelins in my soul, as time takes its toll, audio bullys in controooooooool" without realising its the rushiest house sound of the year, forget "gushing synths", just get a dude gushing into the mic.

I can't wait to see Audio Bullys DJ, and I know it's going to be next year sometime, exciting stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 December 2002 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

perhaps i should give that cd another, less cursory, listen.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 19 December 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Well see what you think anyway, the Stanton Sessions really is what it reminds me of, and that's high praise cos I think that's the best mix of my clubbing lifetime.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i did like the CD but i do think the Bullys MC's style could wear a bit thin quickly, possibly even attracting the same criticism that big beat did in terms of 'beerboy lairyness'

i hope the Audio Bullys make a top album and make some more Weathrally stuff to accompany the house-stompers...more electro, more dub, more punk especially, really love the idea of an Underworld/Sabres/Streets/Clash hybrid right now

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I think their own tracks are good, but I'm not sure their own album will be really massive or new, still decent maybe, but as a DJ duo I think they work quite well.

I agree, they'll probably get the beerboy thing.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 December 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone want my copy of this CD?

michael (michael), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh, I can't account for what other people think!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I'm with Michael on this one - the mag was really entertaining though, you nicked the wrong bit nebbesh!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

: (

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 December 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

WE. DON'T. CARE.
WHAT. YOU. SAY.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 December 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

it was a serious offer re: the CD if anyone wants it. i didn't buy it especially for that, though, so am not too disappointed. entertaining though the magazine is, is has gone down in size rather over the last 5 years, from a somewhat hefty tome to the current flimsy number. and they are obsessed with Underworld...

michael (michael), Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, gave it a cursory listen before work today (away from home and didn't get dibs on the stereo last nite) and wasn't really roused out of my morning vacancy. first half was straight Pure Science/H-Foundation fodder, second half was far cooler due to more grating synths and audio bully trax. their stuff is definitely fun, altho' only hooligan in so much as it sounds pregnant with beer. reminds me of a club i used to go to in Brighton called Stompaphunk, jackin', brash, lairy. however, not sure about the vox, can't decide whether it's Renegade Soundwave (classic) or Megadog (dud).

plus can't help but think the two are a coupla Guy Ritchies.

can anyone give me a definitive hooligan house track (not from this scene, just ever)? no Underworld.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i was going to suggest 'I'm So Crazy' or Carter's 'Women Beat Their Men' which was seen as the definitive 'Smash house' track...going further back, what indeed about Renegade Soundwave? esp the single mix of 'Probably A Robbery'

would the Lo Fis 'Disco Machine Gun' or 'Kool Rok Bass' qualify? obv thats quite a far cry from Audio Bullys really, but i wouldnt lump those tracks as big beat, and they are 4/4 based, for the most part

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 December 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

nebbesh you could be right about the 'Guy Ritchie' thing - Audio Bullys are straight outta Richmond

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 December 2002 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

audio bullys are soo guy ritchie it hurts...but i still like that track...music hall bizness

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 19 December 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

the muzik singles review section is rilly excellent

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 20 December 2002 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this the same sort of stuff as the Jon Carter 7 mix bleedin' into the Subliminal Sessions 2 stuff? Cos that's all excellent. Pure Science etc. do not interest me though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 December 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

don't bovver with the Muzik cd then, but maybe check some Audio Bullies stuff. it's kinda like filter house with downs syndrome i.e. a much-needed bit of randomness. i haven't had a chance to really listen to see whether there's enough in the sound to really capture the attention as much as the idea does. think there's a track by them on gabba.net

so no suggestions for significant hoolie tunes throughout the history of house? Who did that track 'Yaaaah!' that was practically riddled with acne.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Friday, 20 December 2002 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just realised 'We Don't Care' sounds like glitter rock, and loads of glitter bands appropriated bootboy culture too (albeit a very chirpy version).

shit man, are Slade gonna reform for a PA tour?

nebbesh (nebbesh), Friday, 20 December 2002 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

nebbesh, "yaaah!" was by d-shake.
i listened to the cd properly last night, some of it was alright but the mcing and the whole vibe weren't really doing it. was going to say "it's what guy ritchie would do with house" but, hehe, see above. i can imagine that this stuff might be conducive to a bit of an 'atmosphere'(and not the good kind) in a club.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 December 2002 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

although if this is 'menace' these people really should go to rotterdam and see what hooligan house really is!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 20 December 2002 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think it's Hooligan sounding really, I just think they're smart enough to know that next years big popular things will be (a)french house and (b)breaks.

Now there's my bold statement of the day!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 December 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I really hope the hooligan tag doesn't stick either cos I think it's dumb, I mean it's just a lazy description of house that isn't that "your soul is connecting with the african nations and the sea" salsa stuff" or "toniiiiiight my life is so riiiiiight im gonna party all niiiiiiiiight long" diva stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 December 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

they started it...they're called audio BULLYS fer fuggsake.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

and french house and breaks is sooo 2000. 2003 is all about digital disco and air guitars!

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

By the time I groove on down to Jacques and Falcon in Dublin in February French House will own all our souls.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

the second coming eh? i like that idea, its been 6 years after all

i'm missing Jacques tonight and i'm not happy bout it :( his One Live set is being repeated on the Breezeblock on Monday tho

stevem (blueski), Friday, 20 December 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

four weeks pass...
i think the audio boys sounds like black street boyz or elton john...the mix is somewhat of a classical jazz hip hop reggae blend with some african booty shaking rain dancing beats...anyway buy the magazine for the naked toddler in the back page. and praise to the hooligan of the master p.

oz, Sunday, 19 January 2003 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
guy ritchie? straight outta richmond? get ya facts straight. they're jus a coupla lads with a london accent and a decent dress sense. it does happen u know

rosie.jay, Thursday, 2 February 2006 09:27 (twenty years ago)
