When was the last time you were knocked out by something new to you playing in a store enough to buy it, no questions asked? And did it turn out to be classic or dud?

Curt (cgould), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

It was a long time ago – Buzzcocks "Singles Going Steady" – turned out classic

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

(Obv, "Record" can be vinyl, CD, etc) Mine was Supersilent 5, summer '01 at Neptune Records outside Detroit, and it was classic.

Curt (cgould), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

long time ago as well. Zumpano " look What The Rookie Did"

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The CBGB's and the Birth of US Punk compilation album. A lot of the songs on it are available in other places, but these recordings in particular add some punch to the material.

paul cox (paul cox), Thursday, 19 December 2002 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I buy stuff all the time that looks interesting in the store, but hardly ever because it's playing over the store's speakers. I'm a big fan of "Caveat Emptor" (see Devo vs. XTC thread).

hstencil, Thursday, 19 December 2002 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Mo Wax-Headz - I think I actually remember saying to my friend "This would sound great at 45rpm!". Oops.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 19 December 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

A compilation of Les Bantous de la Capitale, the 60s group of Congolese guitar god Pamelo Mounk'a, when I went to Stern's in NYC last week. GRATE.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

thats how i got into grandmaster flash and the furious five at the age of 11. they were playing it on the speakers and some shitty used record store and i bought it blind. ahhh memories.

most of the record stores i go to let you listen to anything on turntables before you buy it, i would say that most small stores (esp, dance/hip hop) let you do that, at least thats my experence.

"Satta!" by Boozoo Bajou

Never, ever happened.

2 Bad Mice - 'Bombscare'

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

well originally Momus! except I couldn't buy it 'cos it wasn't available on cassette, which is all I had :-(

Other notable times : Barry Adamson's Moss Side Story

and most recent Plaid : Rest Proof Clockwork

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS by the Flaming Lips. Had told a friend not but a day earlier that "The Flaming Lips suck", based on my abject loathing of the "She Don't Use Jelly" single (which I still fucking hate).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

My inital exposure to Tom Verlaine and Television came from a cut-out copy of Cover brought blindly. This, of course, led to fifteen years of worship and lust.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

this is the safe way to buy music! most records i never even hear first...

michael (michael), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Pop Ambient 2001. Sounded SHIT on my (crap!) stereo, so I took it back the next day.

OCP (OCP), Thursday, 19 December 2002 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Def Jux presents vol II because the RJD2 song was playing. I haven't listened to any of it since.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 19 December 2002 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Interpol. I heard "Obstacle 1" and found the concept of Ian McCullough bleating about a girl's literacy over a Pixies beat too beautiful. The rest of the album isn't always as fun but I still enjoy the oh-so-college-rock of it all.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 20 December 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Dot Allison's We Are Science - one very good track (and even that sounded way better in the shop than it does at home), the rest is pretty lame-arsed sub-One Dove/DiV drivel. Gah.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 20 December 2002 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Roxy Music's Avalon. Didn't really know who they were, but I bought it the day it came out (Tower El Toro was blasting it on the in-store stereo)

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 20 December 2002 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"Cor," an album by the very unusual but totally wonderful Portuguese singer Mario Joao. I've since concluded that she's one of the best singers in the world.

Michael White, Friday, 20 December 2002 08:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I just did this and it didn't work out for me. I bought the Billion Dollar Babies album "Battle Axe" after playing some things for a few seconds in the store. I thought it would be both really good and unlike many of the records I already own. I changed my mind when I got home and listened through it *sigh*. It's still unlike many of the records I own, though, because I want to keep most of the other ones.

Tom (alternate), Friday, 20 December 2002 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

yo, it's not blind if it's playing in the record store, right?
anyway, my last blind purchas was a pile of brazilian hip hop CDs from a store in sao paulo... the guy at the store actually offered to let me listen but that didn't seem as fun. by far the gem of the lot wasn't even hip hop but a comp of brazilian "funk" (nois da fita 2, and i can't figure out the artists - dj marcos e dj duda?), which is essentially a mixed CD of miami bass-styled beats, clumsy raps, trance keyboard lines, and a mashup approach to sampling (except that i can't really identify many of the samples used). absolutely brilliant.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 21 December 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn - you're right - it wasn't blind at all, was it? It was just not paying attention.

Tom (different one), Saturday, 21 December 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The last I can remember was Cinematic Orchestra's Motion.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 21 December 2002 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

yo, it's not blind if it's playing in the record store, right?

Sure it is, when you don't know who the hell it is that's playing, what's been written about them, who they're friends with, how they comb their hair, etc. Though it also apparently means "seduced by what I saw before hearing any of it", which technically should be termed "buying deaf".

"A man who fails to listen is blind."--Ice-T

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 22 December 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I've thought about this a few times, and I don't think I've ever done it. btw, Tom you're my hero for buying that Billion Dollar Babies record, even if it does suck. I don't know anybody that owns it!

Sean (Sean), Monday, 23 December 2002 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Curt, the last album I bought blind was also at neptune, haha. It is my fave record store by far. The album was "The Damage" by Ludus. Some songs are better than others, but it is pretty good. I love "my cherry is in sherry".

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 01:27 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
Very recently, actually. It was Concubine Rice by Lone Pigeon. I like it a lot.
