"Mellow"

Does it ever bother you to hear music called "mellow", just because it's relatively soft or slow? I mean, there's plenty under the mellow banner that I hold dear, but, say, the Black Heart Procession ain't among them. Perhaps I'm hearing it as rockist pejorative, when all that's intended is shorthand for anything less than in-your-face. I guess I also object to it as a compliment meaning "ooh, this music serves to mellow me out". So tell me, have you never been bugged by mellow?

I'm bugged by cheeses that are labeled 'mellow.'

Yeah, sometimes people apply it to things like Indian classical music (which can get more busy/energetic/intense than lots of rock) or Glenn Branca because it doesn't have the kinds of changes that they're used to so they just hear it as background music.

I like "Another Mellow Spring" by Mellow.

Of course, it's pretty mellow.

I came along,
I wrote a song for you,
And all the things you do,
And it was called "Mellow."

So then I took my turn,
Oh what a thing to have done,
And it was all "Mellow."

Your skin
Oh yeah, your skin and bones,
Turn into something beautiful,
You know, you know I love you so,
You know I love you so.
