I'm 20 minutes from DC, and JB is playing at the 930 Club here in like a week. Should I drop the C-note for me and my wife to see the Godfather of Soul?

Yes/Duhh.

Douglas Wolk to thread

Someone say my name?

(Short answer: you will probably not get a great performance, but you will get $50 worth of Spectacle Spectacle Spectacle. I mean, his voice is shot to hell and his band has been playing the same set for 15 years, but he always ALWAYS comes through with the putting-on-a-show thing.)

He will be dead soon. Go see him.

I saw him in Hackney Ocean last year and it was indeed a great spectacle. They weren't playing much superfunky stuff, but I SAW JAMES BROWN, and a big band (18 of them) playing that tight is just a great sound.

He's still got it. Go see.

I saw JB at Wembley Arena about 15 years ago.

I can't remember how much the tickets were at the time but I know it was the most I'd ever paid to see any one band / musician; and it was, if not actually the worst, then certainly and without any shadow of a doubt the single most *disappointing* gig I've ever attended in my life.

The band were on stage for best part of 2 hours but I doubt if Mr. Brown himself was actually on stage and singing for half an hour of that.

I'd still love to have seen him in his prime, but unfortunately that's a long, long way behind him.

Hello? It's JAMES BROWN!

James Brown? At the 9:30 Club, for heaven's sake? Worth a hundred bucks even if all he does is recite nursery rhymes in a Santa suit.

Hi - I saw him in September, and it was incredible; I didn't know what it would be like to hear him now, as I have to say I don't like the sound of his recent recordings, but having seen him perform, with a wonderful (and large) band was stunning and nothing like his recent studio work. He did an instrumental with truly bizarre keyboard playing which caused a large question mark to hover above my head for about 5 minutes, but I appreciated so much that something like that could happen. I'm so glad I had a chance to see him, and my hands were just pained with clapping. If you like his music in general, it's really worth it.

Word. Looks like the rent is going to be late this month.

Hell no.
