music that desperately wants to be funky even though it clearly doesn't have a single ounce of funk in its entire being. thinking: late seventies/early eighties German New Wave Funk and Disco, funk made by machines, computers that long to be Rick James trousers. awkwardness is a key ingredient in the listeners response, and an utter lack of self-awareness on the part of the performer.

Palias Schaumburg. Anything off their s/t album from 1981. I particularly like the first song, "Wir Bauen Eine Neue Stadt". Totally awkward, but i still think completely funky.

this just sparked a memory. i bought this 1$ double record many years ago, before i really knew what krautrock was, called "Neue Deutsche Unterhaltungsmusik" or Rock in Deutschland, Vol III. i never listened to it in the past because it seemed too new wave. but now that i dig sounds from that era, i put it on and it's exactly this style of music. it's actually rather interesting.

the bands on it are:
Ton Steine Scherben
Wirtschaftswunder
Hans-a-plast
Kein Mensch
S.Y.P.H.
Geisterfahrer
Fehlfarben
Mittagspause
Der Plan
Pyrolator
Mythen In Tuten
Der Moderne Man
Futurologischer Congress
Extrabreit
Die Doraus
Michels
Carambolage
Die Heteros
Sender X
Falco
Scala 3
United Balls
Nervos
Frau G Pazourek
Zoff

isn't there some new comp called "Teutonic Disaster"? It sounds exactly like what you're describing...

yes, and the thread was partly inspired by it...

one month passes...
Maybe -Space Art- would fit in there, that may be more Krautrock. I must state I adore these atrocities of funk. I dare not think of a world with out Kraftwerk, and the output of some of those cheesie Germans.
