Yo La Tengo: Nuclear War

I know I said I thought Yo La Tengo were dud on another thread, but I have since heard a cut off their Nuclear War EP (containing variations based on Sun Ra's "Nuclear War") on the radio and I liked it a lot. Guest artists include: Each of the 4 versions feature different guest musicians such as Daniel Carter, Sabir Mateen, Roy Campbell Jr., Susie Ibarra and Josh Madell. The track I heard made use of a children's choir.

I was very skeptical about Yo La Tengo messing with a Sun Ra song, but I just heard the Sun Ra recording for the first time a few weeks back, and frankly I prefer the remake I heard on the radio. (I don't consider the original a particularly strong Sun Ra recording.)

I got this EP last night from a friend, and it's pretty awesome. The version you heard is hilarious, and there's an awesome version on the second side that's about 15 minutes long and has all sorts of crazy free jazz noodlings. Really enjoyable.

I didn't think I would like that. I thought I would think, "Oh great, yeah, encourage a bunch of little kids to say motherfucker. Hasten the decline of civilization." But actually, it didn't bother me in that way, maybe because the kids sound as though they are taking it seriously (the word and the subject matter both?).

WKDU in Philadelphia, Drexel University's radio station. I think the DJ was a little caught off guard by the "motherfucker," which he only bleeped out about 25% of the time.

I tend to forget to check out the radio, maybe because most of the time I can never find any station I want to listen to for more than one or two songs.

I saw them perform Nuclear War about a year ago as an encore (went on about 25 minutes) .. I been waiting to hear it again ever since .. it was a motherfucker, y'all. It was right after GW Bush started banging the war drum - & he even mentioned developing a new type of nuclear warhead that was less destructive ..(? anyone remember that? I haven't heard any followup on that ...)

So I shall invest in the EP - thanks..

I remember some rumblings from the Pentagon about small scale nuclear weapons or something in the past year or so. I didn't realize Bush had actually mentioned it. I think they wer talking about using "small" nuclear weapons to penetrate fortified weapons missile silos, or something like that. Any excuse to use the things.
