Lemmy-era was generally better. Though the REAL dividing line between good and bad Hawkwind is Robert Calvert.

Hmmm, I dunno...maybe try Warrior on the Edge of Time; Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music; and Quark, Strangeness & Charm? I have a 2CD live set from around that era, called "Atomhenge 76", they were a septet at that point, with Calvert on lead vox. Admittedly not nearly as good as Space Ritual (still their best effort that I have yet heard), but still decent. Once Calvert left, I feel they pretty much lost any trace of distinctiveness they had (though I've always thought them to be rather overrated anyway). I can tolerate the Live 79 album when Tim Blake of Gong was in the band.

There's a reasonably decent anthology/compilation of theirs that came out about a year or two back called EPOCHECLIPSE (geddit?) which features bits from each era (including both "Silver Machine" and "Motorhead" from the Lemmy daze). There's even a completely needless 'remix' of "Silver Machine,' but I usually hit the eject when that comes on.

Their absolute best albums are from when Lemmy was in the groop : "Doremi Fasl Latido" & "Space Ritual"....I like tons of their other stuff tho. To the guy who said Lemmy wasn't a particu;arly important Hawk in some other thread (sory forget who or what xactly you said but) , dude the man wrote "Lost Johnny" &"The Watcher" AND ,andandand AND& "Motorhead"!

"Quark Strangeness and Charm" is an amazing record. Very underrated.

Opens w/ the epic "spirit of the age", Bob Calvert's nutso song about the break-up of a love affair due to the narrator's paramour's parents refusing to allow her to be cryogenically frozen. He's left to make it with her android replica. I hate when that happens.

totally diff. sound from the UA era. More proto new-wave actually. Mostly streamlined, icy synth-driven rock. Although the record also sports 'Damnation Alley', a fine piece of extended chug that starts out like a something from Pink Fairies 'Kings of Oblivion' but takes a detour for a spacey violin solo.

Really I can't see how any ILMer w/ a passing interest in Hawkwind (or underground british rock of the 70's - all kinds of connections here) would dislike QS&C. It's one of their top albums, really.

jason - yes "search of space" is ace, that's their 2nd, last before lem joined......if that's the type of stuff you like (me too!) you'll dig the 2 Lemmy-period albums i mentioned above for certain...investigate the later stuff with caution, i mean lots of it's real good but those 3 albums are the ones for the endless space chug action.
(i agree with mr electrifying mojo about "Quark Strangeness & charm" tho, but like he says it's pretty different, could pretty much be a different band than the one that made "Space Ritual" )`

Trick question, LEMMY IS GOD.

It is written in the soul of the desert
It is written in the signs in the stars
It is written in the sands of the hourglass
It is written

It is written in the eye of the falcon
It is written in the shade of the scorpion
It is written in the wealth of the sun
It is written

It is written that man's truth is a mirage
It is written that death is an oasis
It is written for all unbelievers
It is written

With hawkwind its Better and Best. Apart from all the dodgy, badly recorded live albums. Though if he albums are dirt cheap they can be worth the risk

I do like some later stuff like Chronicle of the Black Swrod and Live Chronicles which is pretty fine.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 23 December 2002 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I second the recommendation of Quark, Strangeness & Charm.

I'm not convinced that Lemmy's contribution to Hawkwind was that major. My understanding is that the three crucial Hawklords are Brock, Calvert, and Nik Turner.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 23 December 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm slowly becoming convinced that "Space Ritual" is the best live album ever...Has anyone seen Cronicle of The Black Sword?? I've only checked out parts of it on a 3rd gen video but man, that shit is soo over the top!!

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought a old vinyl copy of "Roadhawks" the other day, and love it...(this record has "Silver Machine" on it). And I've listened to tracks of a Robert Calvert solo record, and it is the coolest ass D&D rock album ever.

"I FOCUSED..... THE MAG-NIFOIYING GLOSS, THAT BROUGHT THE DOWNFALL OF ICARUS!!!"

oh is that "captain lockheed & the starfighters"? yeah that rules, i need a copy of that record.

one year passes...
space is dark, it is so endless...

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 22 May 2004 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Captain Lockheed's album cover doesn't look particularly D&D like (cool album, though). Maybe db is talking about his next (panned) album Lucky Leif and the Longships? Though that one looks more Monty Python/Terry Gilliam animation-like to me...

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 22 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hawkwind w/ Lemmy is the best stuff, with the pre-Lemmy joints coming in a very close second. It is interesting to hear how much more intense the 'In Search of Space' cuts are when Lemmy siezes and throttles them on 'Space Ritual.' Whether its the Lemmy-ness, or just the fact that it is a live recording is open to specualtion. I tend to side with the Lemmy Factor, which cannot help but increase the output on the 'Balls' knob to something approximating 11.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the lemmy factor should never be underestimated but neither should the calvert factor either.

^sounds better when Dave sings it imo.

Trip Maker, Monday, 7 March 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

As long as we're talking the Hawkwind version of the song.
The Motorhead version is a different beast.

Sam Gopal rules btw. Lemmy singing about watchers and dark riders and shit, with tabla instead of drums. I will Stan til death for that album.
