Alright, here's one for all of you chunky-glasses thick-sideburns guys, I think they're about on par with each other, ATDI being a little more lively, AYWKUBTTOD being a little more witty or arty. Both texas bands, both pretty darn good. I just wish I would have caught ATDI live before they broke up so I could compare live shows. Saw And You Will Know Us By The Length Of Our Band Name twice, both shows excellent.

Well, I don't know about that, at least on Relationship Of Command they seemed to have plenty of variety of shit they were doing. Dually noted, though.

Trail of Dead, certainly.

At The Drive In seemed to be doing nothing new or exciting to me at ALL. Granted, the only ones I heard were Relationship of Command (which I owned but sold) and In Casino Out, but they weren't very exciting. Second-rate Fugazi-isms with Rage Against The Machine vocals. I somewhat enjoyed that one song.. the name of which I can't remember for the life of me. Contained the chorus, "Dancing on the corpses ashes."

Trail of Dead are also fairly derivative, but they evade genericism with an amazing ear for melody and structure.

C'mon, Vic. Trail of Dead are pretty good. You gotta see'em live. And when you do, you gotta do that movie thing, you know, Suspension of Disbelief. That way you really get into it in the beginning of the show when the Willy Wonka clip is playing. I think that rocks, even if it is a little dorkish.

hey, i have thick glasses AND thick sideburns and i don't like either of these bands

but i did see at the drive in a few times before i knew who they were and they put on a really good show. afroed dudes jumped all around off of speakers and shit, wrapped the mic cord around his face and stole glasses from kids in the audience.

Severn MD, but 20 minutes from DC, where both the classic Georgetown punk boutique Smash and the club-where-all-the-staff-is-too-cool-for-you club the Black Cat are. I've probably spent $500 on beer at the Black Cat and my wife spent $120 on Grinders at Smash.

Trail of Dead - especially in public -is an affront to women. One of the few times I was extremely angry and wanted to walk out of their show. How original to ruin a perfectly good guitar every single night.

ATDI had better tunes. TRAIL OF DEAD don't even really dwell in the realm of tunes, so even if they put on more of a spectacle, they lose to ATDI.

I find Trail of Dead generally being a bit more arty sometimes leads to them putting on excruciatingly dull live shows. The last time I saw them play was in a 50 minute festival slot and they spent 10-15 minutes of that doing a reaaaallly bad version of A Perfect Teenhood. The fact that they invariably wreck the instruments at the end doesn't save it for me. Although once they smashed their drum kit totally and shoved it off the stand, and the fans were chanting for encores, so Reese said 'Oh yeah, sure, we'll do an encore, no problem, we'll just put the smashed drum kit back together, yeah? let's see, what's the damage..?'It sounded like he was being very sarcastic, but then they actually did painstakingly put it back together and play another song. Which did save it for me. I think I prefer ATDI, but I didn't get the chance to see them live either. From what I've heard of live recordings I'd assume they were a bit hit and miss live as well, but less so than TOD because there's altogether less noodling involved. Plus I don't think Trail of Dead have made a great record yet, whereas ATDI, like, have.

i saw ATDI on the relationship of command tour, and they were amazingly good. derivative, yes, but i couldn't believe the energy they were throwing at us.
saw TOD on the same weekend and i wasn't impressed. even the (international) noise conspiracy (on the same bill that night) were better. haven't heard TOD on record, though.

What I liked about ATDI was the complete Limp Bisquick production they got. Compared to the nu-metal camp its a shine that much better suits ATDI, or atleast it sets them apart on record. Im lucky in that I didn't have to deal with their super heavey ram them down your throats PR, don't know how I missed it but Im glad.
AYWKUBTTODR2D2 put out at least one fantastic album for Merge with one of my favorite singles in the past few years (Mark David Chapman), and for that I love them. New album is so so. Im not sure how much the label stuck their fingers into the recordings or how much of it is just subpar to start with. But I don't think they owe Thurston, Kim and Lee anymore money than many of their peers.

ATDI was a strong contender for the worst & most boring gig i have ever seen in my life. Also possibly the winners of the coveted haha worst artist to EVER appear on 2later". ToD I haven't heard much by, tho' what I did hear didn't really stay in my BRANE for very long. ToD by default, tho' I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to either to be honest.

Trail of Dead. Their use of additional instruments (piano, horns, strings, a few electronics here and there) is amazing, they have the most ambition, and the thought of their entering the mainstream amuses me more. They also get bonus points for, uh, still being around. Both Sparta and Mars Volta are ace, though, and "Collapse" trumps most of ATDI's entire catalogue.
